We had no idea a bull shark might actually bite a moving dinghy until one did it right beside the anchorage we were heading for. We stop at Staniel Cay to top up the fuel, where we spend about an hour waiting for a centre console to take on roughly 600 gallons. Then a big catamaran heads in ahead of us. By comparison, we’re at the dock for only 15 or 20 minutes, taking on 30 gallons of diesel per side and some gasoline for the generator and dinghy. With the tanks topped up, we continue to Big Majors. That’s when we hear about an 8–10 foot bull shark biting a RIB while it was running through the cut between Big Majors and Fowl Cay. The people aboard had to be rescued by the resort on Fowl Cay. We’ve spent a lot of time in dinghies around the Bahamas. It had honestly never occurred to us that a shark might bite one while it was moving. New fear unlocked. So when it’s time to dive the anchor, Captain Dave comes down with me. The water is murkier than I’d like, visibility is poor, and knowing what happened just around the corner is not especially comforting. We also head back to Staniel Cay for provisions, which leads to one of those very boat-specific jobs that looks nothing like unloading groceries at home. Every bag has to be broken down, reorganized, and squeezed into whatever space we can find aboard Dark Angel. We left our boat in Tahiti while waiting for our long-stay visa in Australia, but an unexpected marina emergency forced an urgent boat move without us on board! Welcome back to Barefoot Doctors Sailing! In this episode, our friend Trevor is boat-sitting our Nautitech 40 catamaran, LouLou, at Marina Papeete in French Polynesia. While tackling DIY boat repairs, including fixing a violently vibrating washing machine and hand-stitching our torn boom bag, the marina delivers shocking news. The pontoon where LouLou is tied up is being dismantled for urgent repairs, and the boat must leave its berth immediately. Because our passports are locked away at the embassy for visa processing, we cannot fly back to Tahiti. In this episode, we pick up anchor at the easternmost island of Tonga and set sail for a more protected anchorage before the high winds arrive. Along the way, the boatyard confirms a haulout date for the following day, so we head straight to their moorings. The next morning, we attempt our first haulout using a trailer system, but challenging conditions and a trailer issue force us back to the mooring for another night. When we return the next day, the conditions are even worse, and our first experience with this type of haulout system in Tonga is more nerve-wracking than expected. That's the question Katia Damborsky explores as she steps aboard the brand-new Lazzara UHV 100 in Turkey for an exclusive first look inside. UHV stands for Ultra High Volume, and Lazzara has made particularly good use of the space available on this 30.5-metre yacht. With approximately 400 square metres of usable space, unusually generous head heights and wide passageways, the UHV 100 has proportions that you would normally associate with a much larger vessel. The yacht is built using advanced composite materials, with an emphasis on durability, structural integrity and long-term reliability. Lazzara also manufactures most of its components in-house rather than relying heavily on subcontractors, allowing the shipyard to maintain close control over construction and finishing. Katia begins her tour on the foredeck, where a large lounging area and Jacuzzi take advantage of the yacht's elevated position above the water. The technical equipment is cleverly recessed, keeping the working areas separate from the spaces used by guests. The upper deck offers a particularly generous lounge, complete with a bar, cinema area and games table. Outside, there is another entertainment area with a concealed television, grill and retractable shade. The wheelhouse is equally impressive, with a striking curved staircase and a design that feels more like something you would find aboard a considerably larger yacht. Inside, the attention to detail becomes even more apparent. Different wood finishes distinguish the decks, while large windows, floating floors and carefully selected materials contribute to the feeling of space and quiet throughout the yacht. The full-beam owner's suite is located forward on the main deck, with panoramic views, two walk-in wardrobes and a marble bathroom. Four additional guest cabins are situated on the lower deck, bringing the total to five. She also explores the galley, which has been designed with family use and extended cruising in mind, before visiting the crew accommodation and engine room. And it is in the engine room that some of Lazzara's most interesting engineering decisions become clear. Redundant systems, a centralised seawater intake and extensive use of hard piping demonstrate the shipyard's approach to building yachts intended to remain dependable over many years. Having previously visited the smaller UHV 87, Katia is already familiar with Lazzara's construction philosophy. But the UHV 100 takes that approach further, combining the practicality of a long-range cruising yacht with the space and finish of a much larger superyacht. **60 Days in the Philippines — Searching for a Place to Call Home** It's been two months since I arrived in the Philippines, looking for a place where I might settle down and begin a new chapter of my life. I've spent much of that time exploring Negros Oriental, including Dumaguete, Dauin, and the beautiful island of Siquijor. There are three things about the Philippines that continue to impress me: the extraordinary natural beauty, the warmth and friendliness of the Filipino people, and the affordability of everyday life. From tropical beaches and colorful marine life to small towns and ordinary daily experiences, I'm getting a better feel for what living here might actually be like. At 68, starting over in another country is quite an adventure. I'm not in a hurry to make a permanent decision. For now, I'm enjoying the experience, discovering new places, meeting people, and seeing where this journey takes me.
