We get asked this question all the time — why did we buy a sailboat in Southeast Asia? In this video, we break down exactly why buying our sailboat in Langkawi, Malaysia ended up being one of the best decisions we’ve ever made. From tax-free boat purchases, to affordable upgrades and repairs, easy access to yacht supplies, and safe, beautiful sailing — we show you the real reasons sailors from all over the world come here to buy, refit, and launch their boats. We talk about: • Why Malaysia (and Langkawi) is tax-free • How we saved huge money on davits, electrics, and rigging • Installing a full Victron Energy setup • Access to yacht supply stores and marina deliveries • Why Langkawi is a safe, beginner-friendly place to sail • The massive international sailing community here • And how close you are to Thailand, Indonesia, and beyond If you’re thinking about buying a sailboat — especially outside the US, Australia, or Europe — this video is for you. If you want to see boats for sale locally, check out Sea Spray Yacht Sales — they’re right next door to us at the marina. Thanks so much for watching and supporting the channel. Don’t forget to like, subscribe, and leave a comment — and we’ll see you next week as we sail into Thailand ⛵️🌴 💙 A huge thank you to everyone supporting us on Patreon — you truly help make this sailboat life possible. Thomas Coville and the crew of Sodebo Ultim 3 have rounded Cape Horn, the last of the great Capes in their circumnavigation, in a record time of 26 days, 4 hours, 46 minutes and 25 seconds. The team on the 105 foot long Ultim trimaran have endured a tricky end to their Pacific Ocean crossing, but still remain ahead of the Jules Verne Trophy record pace set by Francis Joyon on IDEC Sport in 2016/17, but they know their journey up the Atlantic will be challenging, and Joyon’s passage, especially in the North Atlantic, was exceptional. While rounding the legendary point is yet another amazing achievement, the team are fully aware that the ultimate goal is far from complete. We take a look at their Pacific Ocean crossing, as well as the whole Jules Verne Trophy route and the other records that the team has broken so far. From Cape Leeuwin, their passage east to the south of Australia and past New Zealand has been a roller-coaster of emotions, as well as having to navigate seas of over five metres at times. Their lead over IDEC Sport dropped to just 15 miles along the length of Australia, and they briefly fell behind record pace to the south of New Zealand, before regaining a lead at the time that Joyon had to travel relatively far north due to the weather systems they encountered back in 2017. At Point Nemo their advantage increased to 200 nautical miles, increasing to over 500, before light winds hampered them on the approach to Cape Horn, halving their lead at the famous landmark. We also look at where they are, and the immediate challenges ahead. Right now, the team are heading upwind to the North East, and will be looking to hook into the favourable winds between Argentina and the Falkland Islands, avoiding light headwinds winds to the East. The routing is complex in this area in the world, and they need a strong passage to the equator as they aim to build a lead of over a thousand nautical miles by the equator, as they know that Joyon’s team had an extraordinary finish when they set the record. You can track their progress live at https://sodebo-ultim3.sodebo.com/ as well as sending the team a good luck message! #sailing #ultim #julesverne
When we decided to come to the Maldives it was for the surf — a place we’ve been dreaming about for a long time. Our next stop though wasn’t a surf break or a resort… but an island with an abandoned luxury resort, slowly being reclaimed by nature. From there, we explored above and below the water, sailed on past seaplanes landing in crystal-clear lagoons, and eventually found our first waves in the Maldives — something we’d heard so much about and were incredibly excited to experience. What followed was a mix of sketchy moments in the surf, a building storm, and finally months-worth of wind lining up perfectly for kite surfing and wing foiling. This episode is a reminder of why we love this life — adapting to whatever the ocean throws at us, and discovering places that are far from the postcards. 🌊 Join Our Sailing Family Adventure! We continue to make our way to Perth via bush camps and windy dirt tracks. We find some amazing wild camp spots with plenty of wildflowers everywhere. We take a sandy track to explore and end up having to turn around because the road is too boggy and we are towing the camper. It’s remote and we don’t want to get bogged with no help in sight. It’s a 3 hour round trip! Worth it though to see the beautiful landscapes. The Valkry gets lots of use and we enjoy getting to know how she cooks. This now completes our road trip from Broome to Perth. Catch up with us in the next episode when we head to India to traverse it by hire car from Chennai in the east to Kerala in the west!
It is DANGEROUS, things can go wrong. Boats and sailing yachts lift out onto the hard regularly. We're scared after hearing an almighty CRASH when our boat is being boom lifted. With a broken rib Sheenagh carries on working against the clock to finish a long list of jobs before yard shut down. New through-hull depth transducer and display. Stainless steel repaired. Rudder leak found. Replace Anodes. Hull wash and paint. Made friends with the yard dog and met the owner of the boat involved in damage to our safety rail. #sailing #mediterranean #sardinia S3 Ep11: Surrounding Italy - Scary Boom Lift Acknowledgments and links: Marina di Sant'Elmo: https://www.marinasantelmo.it/ OneSails Sardinia: https://www.onesails.com/de/loft_area/mediterranean/italy/sardinia/ Ligurian Sea: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ligurian_Sea Tyrrhenian Sea: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tyrrhenian_Sea MrAlex Tech: www.youtube.com/@MrAlexTech Navionics: https://www.navionics.com/gbr/apps/navionics-boating Navily: https://www.navily.com/ #sailingadventures

#sailingfamily #familyvlog #sailingaroundtheworld #familytravelvlog #boatlife #bucketlist #lifestyle #travel #sailboat We Didn’t Expect THIS on Safari… (Big 5 Spotted!) This week we leave the comfort of our Leopard catamaran behind and trade the open ocean for the wild heart of Africa 🌍🐘 (Yes — even a leopard sighting was part of this unforgettable adventure!) With fairly low expectations, our travel family set off on a true bucket-list experience: a safari at Hluhluwe–Umfolozi Game Reserve… and wow, were we blown away. Thanks to our incredible tour drivers, packed with knowledge and stories, the bush came alive right before our eyes. Against all odds, we saw all of the Big 5, including a jaw-dropping encounter with an elusive lion that hadn’t been spotted in the park for over two weeks 🦁. And just when we thought it couldn’t get better, over 50 elephants crossed directly in front of our vehicle, stopping us in our tracks and leaving us completely speechless. From boat life to the African bush, this travel vlog captures the suspense, the wildlife, and the unforgettable moments that made this safari a massive highlight for our family. If you’ve ever wondered what really happens on a safari, don’t miss this action-packed episode — it’s one for the memory books! We are a suburban blended family that has raised our 3 older children and now want to travel the world. After planning and saving for the past 6 years, we are now embracing our dream of sailing around the world on our Leopard 45 sailing catamaran. Follow our journey as we Circumnavigate the Globe in 3-4 years on a budget of $4,800/month (food, communication, fuel, insurance, transportation, mooring/marina & fun). We left the USA in October 2023 and plan to visit 26 countries on 5 different continents all while worldschooling a budding teen in our off grid tiny house. 🏆 Looking for boating spreadsheets, inside info or wanna help keep the dream alive? You can research liveaboard life endlessly – but some lessons only show up once you’re living it. In this video, we share 7 things you only learn living aboard – the hard, the unexpected, and the genuinely life-changing. After moving aboard full-time, we quickly realised that boat life isn’t just about sailing and sunsets. It’s about systems, mindset, weather awareness, constant problem-solving, and learning how to live well in a very small, very dynamic space. In this episode, we cover: – Why less really is more when you live aboard – The small upgrades that became absolute game-changers – How organisation can make or break daily life on a boat – What the ocean teaches you about weather, patience, and control – The mental load of safety, power management, and constant alertness – The parts of liveaboard life that are quietly exhausting – And why, despite everything, it’s worth every single minute It hasn’t all been easy – there were moments that were uncomfortable, confronting, and at times genuinely terrifying. But the growth, confidence, and sense of achievement that come from living this way have been extraordinary. We’re heading out again next season with a different style of trip, a bigger focus on provisioning and self-reliance, and a few more lessons under our belt. This video captures the foundation that got us there. Thanks for watching. We experienced some rough seas where the winds and waves plowed over the bows for eight hours. We did not escape without damage. This is our repair of our sail locker door piston that was caught by a huge wave that forced it back, breaking the piston coupler. We were lucky, I wish all repairs were like this.
In this wide-ranging interview, marine industry veteran Phil Friedman—Managing Director of Port Royal Group—shares insights from more than three decades in yacht design, construction, journalism, and consulting. From managing a small marina in Ontario to leading major U.S. yacht yards, Friedman offers a rare insider’s perspective on marine surveys, explaining the critical differences between condition and valuation surveys and true pre-purchase surveys, how to choose the right surveyor, and why yacht valuations are often misunderstood. This conversation is essential reading for anyone buying, selling, or building a yacht. Transcript: https://www.yachtsite.com/reference/phil-friedman-on-surveying/

We’re jumping forward to real time because so many of you have been asking what happened to us. On 12th November, while anchored off a tiny remote sand island called Pulau Panjang in Indonesia, No Regrets II was struck by direct lightning to the mast. The strike was devastating — it wiped out almost every electrical system onboard. In an instant, we lost: Navigation and instruments Engines Lighting Low and high voltage power systems Charging systems Communications Essentially everything electrical on the boat This episode is Part 1 of our real-time update series, documenting what we had to do to stabilise the boat, jury-rig critical systems, and begin the long, difficult journey back toward civilisation and eventual repairs. We’re incredibly grateful for the support we’ve received and want to share the reality of dealing with a catastrophic failure while cruising in one of the most remote regions we’ve ever sailed. This is not the adventure we planned — but it’s one we’re living. Hey there! We’re Chris and Jo, an ordinary Aussie couple living our extraordinary dream aboard our Seawind 1260 since January 2019 and now we continue from 2024 aboard our new 1370! Our adventure began with an unforgettable journey down the east coast of Australia, followed by a sail to the stunning New Caledonia. In 2020, we continued our exploration further north, and by 2021 and 2022, we circumnavigated Australia, discovering breathtaking locations along the way. Having previously owned fishing and water-skiing boats, our passion for sailing deepened after crewing in South Australia, leading us to make the leap into full-time living at sea. We hope to inspire you, just as we were inspired by other YouTube channels, to chase your dreams and explore the wonders of this beautiful world. This live stream is built entirely from real questions pulled straight from the comments on recent videos. No slides. No scripts. No armchair theory. We’ll cover real offshore sailing topics—storm tactics, reefing, routing, boat design, fatigue, risk, and judgment—and talk about what actually works at sea, not what looks good in textbooks or marketing brochures. If you’re watching live, drop your questions in the chat. If you’re watching later, leave them in the comments—this series is ongoing. This is about seamanship, margin, and stacking the deck in your favor offshore.
We love sailing to remote places and this week we visit one of the least visited places in Indonesia. The Aru Islands lie just off the west coast of Papua, in a forgotten corner of the country. A few years ago I read a book called "The Malay Archipelago" by Alfred Wallace. He spent many years during the 1800's exploring remote places in this part of the of the world and discovered many many new species of animal. He spent a good deal of time in the Aru Islands and it fascinated me and I'd always wished to visit. Well, now was our chance! With terrible charts, fuzzy satellite images and almost no info online we set off on a real adventure, sailing far inland up narrow channels to a remote village where the real adventure was to begin Enjoy this one guys. We are a Kiwi & French couple with a baby boy living on a sailboat currently in Indonesia, making videos in the hope of making your day a little better. Overbuilding the engine bed might seem excessive… until you factor in weight, torque, vibration, and a moving ocean. In this episode, we lift and align our diesel engine, temporarily set it in place, then pull it back out so Matt can glass the engine mounts permanently into the engine bed. With six layers of double-bias fiberglass, this is one of those areas where strength, alignment, and patience matter more than speed. Engine weight, torque, vibration, and constant motion all get factored in here, and taking the time to do it right now will pay off later when we’re actually underway. While Matt focuses on the engine bed, I’m back in the owner’s hull working on the media cabinet area — sanding, fairing (because of course), priming, and painting. It’s not a showpiece cabinet, but it’s one of those practical spaces that still needs to be clean, durable, and easy to live with. I may have also accidentally used a much higher-end primer than most people would ever put inside a cabinet… no regrets. This episode is a good snapshot of winter boatbuilding for us: heaters running, cold temps outside, slow progress inside, and a mix of heavy mechanical work and interior finishing that slowly turns this project into a livable boat. Thanks for watching and for following along as we keep pushing this build forward, one step at a time. ⛵️
Epic Navigator Double Line Bowline Explained | Strong, Non-Slipping Loop in the Middle of a Rope Contact Information: Website: www.epicnavigator.com WhatsApp: +30 6948 188 226 Email: info@epicnavigator.com Welcome back to Epic Navigator In this video, I break down the Double Line Bowline — a highly practical knot that allows you to create a secure, non-slipping double loop in the middle of a rope, without needing access to either end. This knot is especially valuable in sailing and seamanship when: You need to attach a rope mid-line, not at the ends You want extra strength and load distribution The rope will be exposed to increased friction or chafe You need a loop that will not tighten under load and can still be untied easily afterward The Double Line Bowline combines the legendary reliability of the bowline with the advantage of a double loop, making it ideal for hanging equipment, temporary attachments, rescue situations, or any application where safety and ease of release matter. What You’ll Learn in This Video: ✔️ How to tie a Double Line Bowline step by step ✔️ Why it works in the middle of a rope ✔️ When to use it instead of a standard bowline ✔️ Practical sailing and onboard applications ✔️ Common mistakes to avoid Whether you’re a sailor, skipper, or simply serious about knots, this is a must-know technique that belongs in your core seamanship skillset. If you found this useful, like, subscribe, professional sailing knowledge from Epic Navigator. Skills over gadgets. Seamanship that works when it matters.
Give it a thumbs up if you liked this episode! Catamarans on the move, gear everywhere, and a growing mystery: where the hell are my daggerboards? 😅⛵ In this episode of Sailing into Freedom, the big yard move continues – and chaos reigns. I arrive back at the factory to find nothing where it’s supposed to be. Pallets have shifted, containers are reshuffled, and my carefully “marked” red-sticker system turns out to be not-so-unique in Vietnam. Join me as I hunt down critical cruising gear from Bruntons, Raymarine, Victron, Marlow, Anchor Right, Balmar, HiField Boats and more, while trying to track a missing set of daggerboards in dark sheds and half-empty halls. If you enjoy real-world boatbuilding, bluewater prep, gear nerding, and the messy reality behind a custom sailing catamaran, this behind-the-scenes episode is for you. The move is on, the era at the old yard is ending, and every box we find gets us one step closer to finally sailing free. #sailing #sailingintofreedom #catamaran #boatbuilding #sailingvlog #cruisinglife #sailboatgear #liveaboard #bluewatercruising Get your Sailing Into Freedom Crew T-shirt: https://teespring.com/stores/sailing-into-freedom Want more? This is volume 1 of two volumes which details the work done on the boat while in Anacortes in Sept/Oct 2025. This came after the trip to Alaska and upon return to Washington, before our run South to Mexico. There was extensive work carried out. Some planned and some not planned. For those who like to see the upgrades and maintenance work on a boat this is a perfect viewing opportunity.

Jono Pank and Isobel Bretherton won the GJW Direct Bloody Mary Pursuit Race, the sixth leg of the Seldén Sailjuice Winter Series, held at Queen Mary Sailing Club on Saturday 10th January 2026. Second place went to Angus Cook and Lucie Hopkins, also sailing a Firefly, while third place was taken by Ian Dobson and his son Ted in their Mirror dinghy. Jono Pank became the first sailor to win the Bloody Mary two years in a row, having taken the trophy last year with his son Freddie. This is a remarkable achievement, considering the number of variables and conditions required for such a result. The winning team from Imperial Poona Yacht Club crossed the line ahead of a 124-boat fleet, featuring sailors representing 42 boat classes from 62 sailing clubs. The race was held in a north-easterly Force 2-3, with the sun making a welcome appearance throughout. #boatfoolssailing #IsSailingDead #sailing #boatbuying Is SAILING Dead? The 5 Things You Must Know Before Buying a Boat! Is sailing dead? From the empty docks and rising costs, it can feel that way. But sailing isn’t dead — access to sailing has changed. And if you don’t understand the new rules, buying a boat can quickly turn into frustration, regret, or worse. In this episode of BoatFools Sailing, we cut through the noise and myths surrounding modern boat ownership and lay out the five non-negotiables you must have figured out before buying a sailboat — whether you’re a first-time buyer, returning sailor, or dreaming of cruising “someday.” These are not boat specs. They’re not brand recommendations. They’re the real-world logistics that determine whether sailing becomes a joy — or a burden. ⚓ The 5 Things You MUST Know Before Buying a Boat 1️⃣ Where You Will Store Your Boat? Before you even look at listings, you must know where the boat will live. Marina slips, moorings, yards, and backyard storage all come with costs, availability issues, and restrictions. Storage is often the true limiting factor — not the boat itself. 2️⃣ Where You Will Moor Your Boat? Moorings are scarce, waitlists are long, and rules vary wildly by harbor. Knowing whether you’ll be on a mooring, dock, or trailer — and how secure that arrangement really is — is foundational to successful ownership. 3️⃣ How You Will Move Your Boat? This has two critical parts: A) How will you get the boat from the purchase location to your home port? B) How will you move it seasonally if you must haul out — to a storage yard or even your own backyard? Transportation costs and logistics routinely surprise new buyers. We explain what to think about before you buy. 4️⃣ Why a Survey Is Not Optional A proper marine survey protects you financially, helps with insurance, and reveals issues you can’t see dockside. Skipping a survey is one of the fastest ways to turn a “good deal” into a bad one. 5️⃣ Insurance: It’s Not the Boat — It’s You Insurance is one of the most misunderstood parts of boat ownership. Age of the boat matters far less than your experience, your plan, and your preparedness. We explain what insurers actually care about — and how to avoid dead ends. Sailing isn’t dead. But buying the wrong boat, in the wrong place, without a plan — will make it feel that way. This episode is about helping you get it right. Real boats, real people, real fun! Sailboats for the Rest of Us! Join us for full boat tours, expert insights, and sailing adventures—all with a touch of humor.

Join us aboard SV Excelsior as we depart Galinhos, Brazil, and make our final coastal passage toward Lençóis to officially check out of Brazil. What begins as a straightforward sail quickly turns into an unforgettable leg of our South American adventure. After stopping in a small Brazilian port town for fresh provisions, we’re unexpectedly intercepted by the Brazilian Navy—a tense but eye-opening experience for any cruising sailor. Back underway, the seas turn bumpy, but Excelsior handles it like a champ as we push south past the mouths of Amazonian river systems. With nutrient-rich waters all around us, the fishing goes absolutely wild. Under Chui’s close inspection, Brodie lands mackerel after mackerel in one of our best fishing sessions yet. 🎣 The mood shifts when we encounter the aftermath of a fellow yachtsman running aground, a poignant reminder of the very real dangers of sailing unfamiliar waters along this remote coastline. Our journey ends with a short but sweet stop in Lençóis, marking our final farewell to Brazilian waters—a country that challenged, surprised, and welcomed us in equal measure. If you love sailing adventures, ocean passages, liveaboard life, offshore fishing, and real-world cruising challenges, this episode is for you. Onwards and Upwards. #SailingBrazil #SailingAdventure #LiveaboardLife #SailingVlog #BluewaterSailing
