In this episode, our passage south continues – another 85 nautical miles under our belts as we sail from North Keppel Island to Yeppoon for a quick reprovision, before setting out again via Great Keppel Island and onwards to Pancake Creek. That brings us to 694 nautical miles travelled, with just 176 to go before we’re finally home (unless of course we take more detours...). But the ocean had yet another test in store for us. While anchored at Pancake Creek, a northerly storm rolled in – thunder cracking overhead, lightning flashing across the sky, and winds gusting to 34 knots. Not the place to be in a blow like that from that direction! We rode it out, drenched and exhausted, but it set us up for a fast run to Lady Musgrave Island – our final challenge on this long passage south. Funnily enough, on our way north we’d also copped some pretty gnarly winds in this same anchorage, so it seems Pancake Creek just isn’t our lucky spot. We would have been happy not to see another storm like that for a while, but there's even more to come. Thanks for watching. Leg 2 of our big trek home – and what a run it’s been! We covered another 300 nautical miles over 10 days, dropping anchor at 8 beautiful spots between Cape Gloucester, the Whitsundays and North Keppel Island. There was some wily weather, plenty of sunshine, and a few of those golden sunsets that make the long days worth it. Somewhere along the way, our sail car gave up, but with a bit of MacGyver magic we managed to patch it up and keep sailing. We also had some cracking sails and a heap of fun tacking our way through – it feels good to finally be getting the hang of it! Oh, and the highlight? A 144cm Spanish mackerel that made us (the cat and the freezer) very happy. We’ve now notched up over 600 nautical miles on the trip south – only about 260 to go. The home stretch is in sight… though there might be a few detours yet. In this video, we’ve begun the long trek south from Cairns back to Brisbane – we will do over 780 nautical miles all up (depending on how many detours we take!). It took us 185 days to meander our way north, but with only 25 days to get south of Gladstone for insurance, we’re now doing some big sailing days to make it happen. Part 1 of the journey covers Cairns to Cape Gloucester – 309nm in just six days! We’re tired but it was worth every mile to have squeezed in a few more days exploring the Great Barrier Reef. The Queensland coastline is huge, and this leg included Kym’s second-ever night sail… which we accidentally did in total darkness after miscalculating the moonrise! But we made it, safe and salty, ready to gear up for Part 2 as we continue the push south toward Gladstone. In this video we also reference our log book - if you're interested in seeing more on this, check out this video: https://youtu.be/dXTq3IqAdOA Thanks for watching. Before we left North Queensland on the long trek home, we took the chance to head out to the Great Barrier Reef to visit stunning Arlington Reef and Upolu Reef, just off Cairns. At Arlington, we had our very own private lagoon – the clearest, most incredible blue water you’ve ever seen. Jason speared his first-ever Coral Trout while we snorkelled among vibrant coral gardens. Sadly, my underwater camera decided to take its job description a bit too seriously. It’s now completely full of water and has officially retired from filming – though it still looks the part. So at Upolu, when we spotted our first-ever clownfish in the wild, you’ll just have to take our word for it! Both reefs were breathtaking, and we feel so fortunate to have explored this spectacular part of Queensland before beginning our 820nm sail home. What an adventure it’s been! Thanks for watching. We took some very good friends from Cairns over to Fitzroy Island for a long weekend of fun, snorkelling, and some much-needed time to reconnect. With a Spanish Mackerel on the line on our way over, there was plenty of fresh fish to share with the whole gang. The snorkelling was incredible – healthy coral, schools of colourful fish, and then a truly magical moment when a curious turtle swam right up to the camera. It felt calm, connected and utterly unforgettable – one of those encounters that reminds you why the ocean has such a hold on us. It was so special to share this time with people who truly matter. A final catch-up back in Trinity Inlet – capped off with some unexpected fireworks – was the perfect ending to a weekend that had it all. Thanks Cairns, how lovely to see you again. We battled 36kn winds, torrential rain and big seas on our way to Cairns – one of our toughest passages yet aboard ARGO! We left Kent Island and headed for Mourilyan Harbour to ride out some serious weather – and big it was, with gusts up to nearly 70km/hr even inside the harbour! Outside must’ve been wild, so we were grateful for the protection. With torrential rain and grey skies for days, we finally spotted a break in the weather and made a dash north towards Cairns. The sea had other plans though – the waves had us feeling more like we were in a washing machine than the ocean! After a rough ride, we dropped anchor in the calm, protected waters of Fitzroy Island, where we visited their Turtle Rehabilitation Centre before continuing on to Yorkeys Knob to collect friends for a few days together. It’s a huge milestone to have made it to Cairns, something we honestly weren’t sure we’d achieve this season! Thanks for watching. We sailed out to Eddy Reef, just off Dunk Island, to take advantage of a patch of good weather and explore another part of the Great Barrier Reef. With vibrant coral, plenty of fish, and even a friendly turtle to swim alongside, it turned into one of our most memorable snorkels yet. From there, we dropped anchor at Kent Island – a tiny coral island with stunning views and a sunset that lit up the whole sky. Next stop: Mourilyan Harbour, where we’ll sit out a few fairly hectic rainy, windy days before making our way north to Cairns. The trek north continues. Thanks for watching. Dunk Island was once a thriving resort destination before Cyclone Yasi struck in 2011, leaving much of it in ruins. Today, the island is slowly coming back to life. There’s a beautiful new glamping area, a fantastic amenities block, a relaxed café serving cold beers and great food, and a stunning beach perfect for unwinding. While the old resort buildings still bear the scars of the storm – with trees even growing through some of the rooves – it’s heartening to see signs of renewal. Dunk Island remains a magical spot, and it’s well worth the visit to experience both its natural beauty and its story of resilience. Thanks for watching. From coral reef to island paradise – this sailing passage took us from John Brewer Reef to Dunk Island, with a stop through the breathtaking Hinchinbrook Channel. The dramatic mountain ranges, lush rainforests and winding creek systems make this area one of the most spectacular parts of Queensland’s coast. We dropped anchor at Lucinda, took the tender to shore and enjoyed a great pub meal before heading deeper into Hinchinbrook’s waterways. Gayundah Creek was a highlight – calm, sheltered and surrounded by stunning scenery, even when the winds picked up. Finally, we set sail for Dunk Island to wrap up this unforgettable leg of the journey. Thanks for watching. We set sail from beautiful Orpheus Island and made our way out to John Brewer Reef, one of the most unique spots on the Great Barrier Reef. Picking up a mooring right on the reef, we had front-row access to crystal-clear aquamarine water, vibrant coral, and an underwater experience like no other – the Museum of Underwater Art (MOUA). Snorkelling around the sculptures was both surreal and breathtaking, with marine life weaving through the artwork, making it feel like nature and art had become one. Add to that some incredible reef scenery, sunshine, and perfect conditions – and this was an unforgettable stop that truly lived up to the hype. Every sail out to the reef builds our confidence, and this trip was one for the memory books – a must-do if you’re sailing or snorkelling around Townsville. Thanks for watching. Orpheus Island has always felt a little out of reach – a tiny slice of paradise with a price tag of $2395 a night! But on this trip, we were lucky enough to tie up to a free mooring buoy and soak in the magic without the luxury bill. From secluded beaches and a peaceful bush walk to a lookout with breathtaking views, to ending the day with freshly caught fish cooked aboard ARGO – it all felt like such a treat. We were especially excited to visit the Giant Clam Garden, though what we found left us deeply saddened after the events earlier this year. Still, this beautiful island gave us a moment to pause, reflect, and appreciate the journey so far. This was our stepping-stone before heading out to the reef – and we’re so glad we finally made it. We sailed from Townsville across to Magnetic Island and were pleasantly surprised by just how much it had to offer. From stunning beaches and a calm anchorage at Horseshoe Bay to a surprisingly fascinating WWII Fort walk, this island is full of history, nature, and charm. Along the way we spotted koalas in the trees, playful rock wallabies, and enjoyed exploring the island with the handy $1 daily bus pass. Add in a local brewery, great little restaurants, and plenty of relaxing spots and Magnetic Island has quickly become one of our favourite destinations so far. We can’t wait to return! After 2½ unforgettable months in the Whitsundays, it was finally time to point ARGO north and begin our passage to Townsville. Over 5 days we meandered our way up the coast, treated to an incredible mix of moments – whales breaching nearby, Kym taking the helm as skipper, and the excitement of catching our very first Spanish mackerel (a monster at over a metre long!). With steady winds and some beautiful sails along the way, this leg of the journey was a reminder of why we love life afloat – the surprises, the challenges, and the pure joy of the sea. After 2.5 months exploring the Whitsundays, we’re wrapping up this unforgettable chapter of our sailing journey. From daily whale visits and snorkelling adventures, to chasing down underwater sea sculptures, catching mud crabs, fish and squid, and even heading out to the reef for the very first time on ARGO – this place has given us so many memories we’ll never forget. We celebrated birthdays aboard, welcomed friends and family, and soaked up the beauty of sailing in this magical part of Queensland. We set out on a snorkelling adventure to track down the five hidden underwater sculptures scattered across three beautiful locations in the Whitsundays. It’s such a brilliant initiative – blending art, marine conservation and exploration – but don’t be fooled... these sculptures are not easy to find! From Manta Rays to Maori Wrasse, we finally uncovered each piece and in doing so, got to really soak in the surrounding coral gardens and marine life (just for admiring, not for eating!). If you’re up this way, this is such a unique and rewarding thing to do – part snorkelling trip, part treasure hunt. Thanks for watching. There’s something magic about Hook Reef off the Whitsundays – the aquamarine blues, the thriving coral, the feeling of being far from it all. In this episode, we snorkel crystal-clear waters with friends Jim, Gordo and Oatsey, share a few laughs, and take a moment to reflect on just how lucky we are. Our good mate Jim from Trim also gets a cameo talking about what this sailing life means to him. A day filled with colour, connection and coral, topped off with some very close by whale action. Weaving our catamaran into Hill Inlet for the first time was both breathtaking and nerve-wracking. This stunning channel near Whitehaven Beach is known for its beauty – and its shallow, winding approach. We threaded our way in with just 0.1m under the keel, holding our breath as we nudged ARGO through the twists and turns within the inlet. We’d hoped to beach the boat and scrub the hulls on the sand, but with murky water, a swift current, and the tide not in our favour, we changed plans and jumped in where we anchored. It wasn’t ideal, but she got a much-needed clean. Before heading back out, we reassessed everything. Jason walked the shallows at low tide and manually plotted a safe course into Navionics. With the next high tide approaching, we made our move – and slipped back out just before sunset, nerves intact and beers well deserved. ⛵️ In this episode: – First-time sail into Hill Inlet’s narrow, snake-like channel – A tense moment with 0.1m under our keel – Hull cleaning in less-than-ideal conditions – Plotting a manual track out – Escaping safely at sunset, with a beer to celebrate Thanks for watching. We finally did it – our first sail out to the reef off the Whitsundays! It was a little nerve-racking heading out into the deep blue with no land in sight, but we had our buddy boat Trim and our good mate Jim leading the way. And what an adventure it turned out to be. From catching monster squid and fish, to helping rescue a boat that lost its anchor line in the dark (scary stuff out there at night!), this trip had it all. We were so grateful for the fish he shared with us in return (thanks Harry) – and even prouder when we headed off to the next reef solo and made it with ease. Anchoring on the reef is something we’ll never forget. Just us, the ocean, that endless turquoise water… and a sky full of stars. One of the most surreal and beautiful moments of our journey so far. Who knew there’d be such a bounty of seafood hiding just behind what has been claimed as the world’s most beautiful beach? We took the tender up into the creek systems of Hill Inlet after hearing rumours of mud crabs lurking in the mangroves – and we weren’t disappointed. A few well-placed pots later and we had ourselves a decent haul. Special shout out to Kev & Kate from @BaittoPlate for the tips and sharing their chicken bait - legends. Then, while anchored in a stunning stretch of turquoise water, we threw in a line and landed some squid… one of which made a last-ditch attempt to escape by squirting ink all over Kym. (Classic squid move, 10/10 for drama.) We topped it off with a beach stop all to ourselves – just us, the sand, and the quiet hum of nature. It’s wild to think how much life is teeming just out of sight in places like this. Hill Inlet isn’t just beautiful above the water – it’s thriving beneath it too. It’s one of those pinch-yourself moments. Every day out here, this trip keeps surprising us. Thanks for watching.
