In this episode, we pick up where we left off before the devastating lightning strike at Panjang Island interrupted our regular series. Before the chaos unfolds, we wanted to share some incredible drone footage of the enormous white sand spit and this beautiful anchorage—a place that, just hours later, would change everything. We then skip ahead, past the journey of getting No Regrets II safely back to Phuket, where the real work begins. With an enormous repair list ahead of us, we get stuck into transforming the boat. We enclose the rear seating area, just as we had on our old Seawind 1260, create valuable extra galley storage by opening up the saloon seat and fibreglassing in a brand-new cupboard, replace the hybrid induction/gas cooktop with a full induction cooktop, get both engines running perfectly again, complete most of the electrical repairs after the lightning strike, and renew the antifoul while raising the bow's waterline by 60mm. Incredibly, after just three weeks of repairs, upgrades and maintenance, No Regrets II is ready to return to the water. Although there's still plenty left to finish, we're determined to salvage what remains of the Christmas holidays with our family, who have flown over to spend Christmas with us. Hey there! We’re Chris and Jo, an ordinary Aussie couple living our extraordinary dream aboard our Seawind 1260 since January 2019 and now we continue from 2024 aboard our new 1370! Our adventure began with an unforgettable journey down the east coast of Australia, followed by a sail to the stunning New Caledonia. In 2020, we continued our exploration further north, and by 2021 and 2022, we circumnavigated Australia, discovering breathtaking locations along the way. Having previously owned fishing and water-skiing boats, our passion for sailing deepened after crewing in South Australia, leading us to make the leap into full-time living at sea. We set sail for Belitung expecting a straightforward passage, but before long one of our engines begins to fail. After investigating, we discover the culprit — the dreaded diesel bug. With contaminated fuel clogging our filters, we find ourselves troubleshooting the problem at sea. As filter after filter blocks up, we replace them and put our fuel polishing system to work, only for that to become clogged as well. Determined to keep moving, we continue toward Belitung, arriving after dark and carefully weaving our way through hundreds of fishing boats using radar to navigate safely through the maze. Once safely at anchor, the work really begins. We climb inside the fuel tank and remove the remaining diesel bug contamination, hoping to finally put an end to the problem before it strands us again. Finally, we drop anchor off beautiful Tanjung Kelayang Beach, catch our breath, and spend the afternoon clearing out of Indonesia before the next leg of our adventure. We leave Nusa Lembongan and sail along Bali's rugged northern coastline, passing hundreds of traditional sailing boats hauled up onto the black sand beaches. Their white hulls line the shoreline as far as the eye can see, creating a striking contrast against the dark volcanic sand. Out on the water, however, many of these beautiful vessels are under sail, their colourful sails brightening the horizon and adding a splash of colour to the dramatic coastline. Along the way, we're treated to some amazing wildlife encounters. A small pod of pilot whales makes an appearance, followed by a large group of playful dolphins that spend time surfing our bows and racing alongside No Regrets II. After a mid-passage refuelling stop, we arrive at the wonderfully welcoming town of Sangkapura on Bawean Island. From the moment we step ashore, we're greeted with warm hospitality, including the chance to sample a traditional local fish dish. The locals then take us to a nearby school, where students eagerly practice their English with us—much to our embarrassment, as their English is far better than our Indonesian! Not content to stay in town, we hire scooters and set off to explore the island, visiting a beautiful freshwater volcanic lake and taking in the laid-back charm of Bawean. We finish the day at a local doughnut shop, where our unexpected visit leaves the ladies behind the counter both delighted and slightly bemused. From dolphins and whales to warm smiles and island hospitality, this is a side of Indonesia few travellers ever get to experience. 🌴⚓🐬 Timestamps if you like to Jump Right In: 00:00 Intro 00:33 Leaving Lembongan 04:10 Pilot Whales and Dolphins 05:27 Refuelling from our bladders 10:49 Bawean 11:52 Scooter to the lake WHO ARE WE? We head to Moyo Island, where we hire scooters and ride through the jungle to the stunning, multi-tiered limestone Mata Jitu Waterfall—also known as Lady Diana Waterfall. It earned its nickname after Princess Diana visited this remote, pristine jungle retreat in 1993. From there, we continue on to Nusa Lembongan for a couple of days of diving on exceptional coral reefs, alive with abundant fish life and the hope of spotting a sunfish. We’re impressed by just how healthy the reefs are and the sheer density of marine life, though we’re also surprised by how busy one site in particular is—Manta Point. We leave Komodo National Park and sail towards the extinct volcanic island of Satonda, off the northern coast of Sumbawa. Famous for its unique saltwater crater lake hidden at the centre of the island, Satonda is an incredible place to visit. The anchorage, however, is very limited, and just beyond it the seafloor plunges to depths of over 1,000 metres as the volcano drops away into the ocean. We stop only for the day, with several of the other rally boats jumping aboard No Regrets to explore the island together. Continuing on to Sumbawa, we’re welcomed by some of the friendliest locals we’ve ever met, making this stop just as memorable as the destination itself. But the real highlight comes before sunrise, as we wake early for a truly unforgettable experience — swimming alongside majestic whale sharks. Seeing these enormous yet gentle creatures up close was absolutely breathtaking and something we will never forget. Komodo Part 2: DRAGONS. We head to Rinca Island for a guided walking tour in search of the legendary Komodo dragons, seeing them up close in their natural environment. From there, we join a speedboat day trip to Padar Island — one of the most photographed locations in Komodo National Park — taking in its iconic viewpoints and dramatic landscapes. Next, we snorkel around a stunning coral cay surrounded by vibrant reefs and abundant fish life, before an unforgettable encounter swimming with manta rays in the open water. Our Indonesian adventure continues as we sail towards the world-famous Komodo National Park, with a few unforgettable stops along the way. First, we visit the stunning Rangko Cave, swimming in its crystal-clear water before finishing the day with an incredible sunset overlooking Labuan Bajo from Sylvia Hill. The girls take a tour through Atlas Pearl Farm to learn how pearls are harvested, while later we hire scooters and wind our way through the hills to the beautiful Cunca Wulang Waterfall for a refreshing swim in the jungle. But the real adventure begins beneath the surface. We join a dive charter to explore some of Komodo’s most famous dive sites, experiencing some of the strongest currents we have ever encountered. The reefs are absolutely spectacular, packed with marine life, but these dives are definitely not for inexperienced or faint-hearted divers. We leave the paradise of Maratua and sail south through the Makassar Strait, encountering fierce currents and some surprisingly large rogue waves along the way. Mid-passage, Chris tackles a leak in the watermaker to keep everything running smoothly onboard. Our first stop is the tiny town of Sendana, where the locals warmly welcome us and get us involved in a fun local challenge. Continuing further south to Pamangangang, we capture some stunning drone footage of the islands and crystal-clear waters before finally arriving in the bustling city of Makassar. Once ashore, we hire a couple of tuk tuks to show us around the city, stock up on diesel fuel, fresh fruit and vegetables, and visit one of the most incredible mosques we have ever seen. We depart Tawau, Malaysia and make our way to Nunukan to clear into Indonesia, passing one of the largest seaweed farms we’ve ever seen—thousands of plastic bottles stretching across the ocean. After two days of clearing in, we finally set sail for Maratua, often described as Indonesia’s version of the Maldives… and it does not disappoint. From above, the drone reveals a breathtaking atoll and lagoon, but it’s what lies beneath the surface that truly blows us away. We dive along incredible walls and at the lagoon entrance, battling some of the strongest currents we’ve ever experienced, surrounded by thriving marine life. Back on land, we hire a scooter to explore the island, discovering some of the friendliest villages we’ve ever encountered—endless smiles and greetings everywhere we go. We also venture to Goa Halo Tabung and Goa Gumantung, two hidden cave pools with crystal-clear, emerald-blue water, tucked within dramatic limestone landscapes. We arrive at the remote island of Bohay Dulang and hike up to a stunning viewpoint overlooking the bay, before diving into the nearby reefs filled with vibrant coral and marine life. From there we head into Semporna and board our dive boat out to Sipadan—one of the world’s top dive sites—for unforgettable dives along incredible coral walls teeming with fish. Back at anchor, we organise a Seawind raft-up with eight boats taking part in the Sail Malaysia Rally, creating an amazing floating community in the bay. Fresh fish is delivered for a big cook-up onboard, shared by everyone at anchor. We depart Sandakan heading further east, enjoying a beautiful sail and even landing a delicious Spanish mackerel along the way before anchoring overnight behind Tambisan Island. Setting off early the next morning, we round the easternmost tip of Borneo and pass through one of the most sensitive regions, close to the Philippines. Under the watchful eye of ESSCOM, who escort us and ensure our safety, we continue along the eastern peninsula with confidence. Arriving in Lahad Datu, we refuel using our fuel bladders for the first time and stock up at the well-supplied local markets. As we depart, we sail past the anchored officials with sirens sounding and horns blasting—a lively send-off—before making a short day sail to W Bay. This leg comes with some very special guests onboard. The lovely ladies from Tourism Malaysia join us on No Regrets, drawing plenty of curious attention from nearby boats eager to come in for a closer look! Along the way, we introduce them to a true Australian classic—Vegemite. To our surprise, they seemed to enjoy it… or at least did a very convincing job of making us believe they did! At W Bay, we’re welcomed with another fantastic rally dinner and genuine local hospitality. We spend the next few days diving some of the best coral and fish life we’ve seen in Malaysia so far, all in crystal-clear water. We wrap up this incredible stretch sailing past the Blue Hole, capturing some stunning drone footage, before arriving at Gading Gading—where, once again, we’re greeted with warm smiles and another memorable rally dinner. We completed our last-minute provisioning in Sandakan with new crew Geoff and Anne before setting off to negotiate the shallow shoals and enter the Kinabatangan River. After a leisurely motor upstream to the midway stopping point at the big U-bend, we took the tender into a side lagoon for a true Borneo jungle adventure. That evening, all the rally boats gathered for a celebratory drink. Unfortunately, we were interrupted by the blast of a tug’s horn as it came downriver towing a huge barge. With no time to waste, we leapt into the tender and raced to the first upstream boat, dropping two people aboard to get it started and out of the way. I immediately spun the tender around and pushed with everything it had, forcing the yacht sideways just enough to narrowly clear the oncoming barge. We then raced downriver, pushing each yacht in turn to clear a path. There simply wasn’t time for anyone to lift anchor and move under their own power. Thankfully, every yacht in the barge’s path was shifted to safety. Continuing upriver, we made it as far as the powerlines at Sukau, 36 nautical miles inland, and enjoyed a couple of wildlife tours in search of proboscis monkeys, orangutans, hornbills, and—if we were lucky—a pygmy elephant. On the return journey, we once again negotiated shallow shoals and strong currents before making our way back out, covering a total of 86 nautical miles along the river. WHO ARE WE? Hey there! We leave Kota Kinabalu and sail around the northern tip of Borneo, stopping at several spectacular bays along the way and enjoying another wonderful rally dinner at Usukan Cove. Continuing on to Kudat, we attempt to anchor and med-moor but struggle to get the anchor to set in the tricky conditions. Thankfully several rally boats come to our rescue, lending a hand and reminding us once again how supportive the cruising community can be. The rally tour bus then takes us on a land adventure to the Tip of Borneo, where the South China Sea and Sulu Sea meet. Along the way we visit a local homestay and a fascinating honeybee farm. From Kudat we carefully navigate through a maze of reefs to reach Turtle Islands Park. Normally off limits to boats, the Sail Malaysia Rally receives special permission to visit this protected sanctuary. That evening we’re fortunate enough to witness an incredible moment — a female turtle coming ashore to lay her eggs — and learn about the conservation efforts helping ensure the hatchlings have the best possible chance of survival. Leaving the islands behind, we sail to Sandakan where we refuel No Regrets II at the fuel barge and fill our new additional fuel bladders for the journey ahead. While in Sandakan we visit the remarkable Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre and the nearby Bornean Sun Bear Conservation Centre, getting an unforgettable close look at these endangered animals. Finally, Geoff and Anne arrive to join us as new crew for the next leg of our adventure. WHO ARE WE? Hey there! After checking into Kota Kinabalu, we dive into a few unforgettable adventures — white water rafting through jungle rapids, witnessing incredible fireflies illuminate the riverbanks at night, and soaring high above the coastline while parasailing. It’s the perfect send-off before Emma heads home. We then sail to Dalit Bay, carefully navigating a shallow sandbar in a strong tidal river before anchoring securely. But the drama isn’t over. Another boat fails to negotiate the powerful current and drifts straight into us while we’re at anchor, slamming into our bow and causing damage. We’re forced to carry out temporary repairs to keep No Regrets II strong and watertight. Despite the unexpected collision, we finish on a high note with a wonderful cultural show and rally dinner as part of the Sail Malaysia Rally, celebrating another eventful chapter of the journey. We leave Miri and sail to Pulau Tiga, better known as Survivor Island. Famous for its bubbling mud volcanoes, we cover ourselves head to toe in cool-to-the-touch, mineral-rich mud. It takes a little encouragement for the girls to get in — but once they do, it turns into an unforgettable (and very messy!) experience. After washing off, we snorkel the vibrant coral reef while park rangers keep watch overhead with a surveillance drone — monitoring the area for the island’s resident crocodile. It definitely adds an edge to the swim! We then hop across to nearby Lovely Paradise Island, where pure white sand and crystal-clear water create a true tropical postcard scene — best admired from the island’s quirky pool table overlooking the beach. We hope to inspire you, just as we were inspired by other YouTube channels, to chase your dreams and explore the wonders of this beautiful world. We arrive at Miri Marina and before we can even think about exploring, the first job is organising multiple fuel runs to top up several boats with diesel. Soon after, Emma joins us and we head inland to explore the incredible Niah Caves — a fascinating glimpse into Borneo’s ancient past. Setting sail eastward, the calm conditions don’t last. Out of nowhere, a sudden tropical storm hits, with winds jumping from just 6 knots to over 40 in seconds. Thankfully, we manage to get the sails down in time, but our buddy boat isn’t as lucky and suffers some damage in the chaos. We continue on through Brunei, passing the Sultan’s palace and enjoying a beautifully protected anchorage before pushing on toward Labuan. There, we encounter our most polluted anchorage yet. It takes several attempts to set the anchor, repeatedly fouled by plastic rubbish covering the seabed. It’s a sobering reminder of the reality beneath the surface — but Labuan’s duty-free shopping, especially the chocolate, helps soften the experience. We travel 125 nautical miles along the Rajang River, the longest river in Malaysia, battling strong currents, weaving through countless ships and barges, witnessing logging of the Borneo rainforest, and meeting incredibly friendly locals on our way to the town of Sibu. We explore the night markets and the Sibu Central Market—Malaysia’s largest indoor market—checking out the local fish market and sampling a few unusual fruits. On the way upriver we squeeze under one bridge, then on the return journey take an alternative exit, passing under two more bridges marked at just 20 metres high… shorter than our 22-metre mast!” Timestamps if you like to Jump Right In: 00:00 Intro 00:35 Early start for the Rajang River 02:36 Anchor stuck before river trip 04:40 Bridge 1 10:37 Sibu 12:54 Sibu Central Market 17:03 Bukit Lima Nature Reserve 19:13 Heading back, bridge 2 22:06 Bridge 3 23:37 Launching tender in strong current WHO ARE WE?
