Sailing to remote Atoll and refused entry A TRICKY Check In as The World SHUT DOWN Begins ! Majuro to Maloelap EP70 After 6 weeks in Majuro we utilise our outer atoll cruising permits and head north to Maloelap atoll to do some exploring . The journey starts out quite lively with twenty five knot winds on the beam and a confused sea state which makes life a tad uncomfortable. We have a busy night sail with a few squalls keeping interesting and not conducive to a nights sleep for those off-watch. Over the course of the night the wind drops off , so we motor the last couple of hours to the pass on the south side of Maloelap Atoll. We head up to Taroa Island on the north east corner of the atoll and wait for another 35 knot squall to pass before putting the hook down in front of the village. Later in the day we are greeted by the local policeman who comes to the back of DT in one of the villages long boats. There was an announcement from the prime minister that morning banning all international travel to the Marshall islands. Confusion abounds ... Can we stay? Do we have to turn back ? After one month of living off grid on a small island, we learn the world is still shut down. After the ladies complete the food shopping, we learnt it was too early to be back around people. We head straight back to Nandji and set some sails and got as far away as we were allowed, time to spend another month off grid of lockdown living. Rather than return to Angry monkey beach, we find a new anchorage at the bottom of some cliffs. With no internet for two weeks, we move Nandji again closer to a beach where the Whippet can stretch his legs easily. With no other people around for weeks, the noises of the jungle really made it feel we were a long way from anyone or anything. A great place to hide away and let the world heal. With no sailing experience, we bought a yacht, got it blue water cruising ready and set off from Australia sailing to the Pacific! We have since cruised through New Caledonia, Vanuatu, the Solomon islands, Papua New Guinea, Indonesia and then onto the boat yard in Malaysia to prepare for the years to come. With a new engine, we continued onto Thailand, then back down into Indonesia and specifically West Sumatra to live the island life and chase the surf. With our Sailing plans changing, we returned to Thailand to wait for the weather and begin our journey to the northern route of the Indian Ocean to Sri Lanka before heading south across the Indian Ocean once cyclone season has finished and the trade winds begin! We were on our shake down sail when the mooring we were on failed and our home ended up on the reef. We saved the old girl and got her back to the boat yard for repairs to continue on our adventure! Ready to sail across the Indian Ocean, we were only days away from leaving when the pandemic begun closing countries around us... We are stuck for now, but enjoying the slower pace! We departed the east coast of Australia in July 2017 and have since sailed over 10000nm offshore. We have explored some amazing countries and met some beautiful people along the way. We have experienced so many different and diverse cultures, dived pristine reefs, surfed solo in the middle of nowhere, spent weeks at sea, dealt with storms, big waves, strong winds and had the time of our lives doing it! We wanted to work our way west along the coast of England, but when some good north winds came along, we chose to ride them 90 miles to the Isles of Scilly. There's a notorious spot called The Lizard, where if you time the tides wrong, you're looking at very built up and uncomfortable seas. We left from Cawsand Bay around 2 pm, with the hopes of averaging 4.5 knots of speed, to put us at the Lizard around 1:30 am. Our only problem? Elements was having the sail of her life and DID NOT want to slow down! Shooting out of Plymouth Sound at 8 knots, we kept reefing and minimizing headsail, but there was no way we could get her down to that 4.5 knots we were aiming for. We did end up getting to The Lizard about two hours early, but because we stayed 5 miles offshore, and had the wind and current coming from the same direction, it was a non issue. We were able to continue on and make it to the Isle of St. Agnus in the early morning. So many great places to explore here, and we're so happy to have you along for the ride! We hope you enjoy! In 1997, after a disastrous Olympic rowing campaign, Rob decided to row a seven-metre plywood boat, 2500 miles from Tenerife in the Canary Islands to Barbados in the Caribbean. It took 6 weeks and he and his rowing partner, Phil Stubbs, won the inaugural Atlantic Rowing Race. Skip forward to 2014, we invested in Javelot a 43 ft Fountaine Pajot catamaran. Armed only with Robert's 3 years of racing P class yachts from the age of 11 to 13, and Rachel's non existent sailing knowledge, we set off to learn the ropes of ocean sailing. We broke stuff, replaced stuff and got to know our boat before heading offshore with our three children, Finn 17, Declan 15 and Ivan 12, in tow. Through trial and error, we have become confident wayfarers, kind of. Our plan? To sail around the world, meet the locals and record our adventures. Part of the journey will be retracing Rob’s eldest brother Kerry’s travels at sea. Using Kerry’s original letters from the 1970’s we will re trace his movements from Australia through Indonesia and South East Asia to Cambodia where Kerry’s life was cut short after straying into Cambodian waters in 1978. Le cerveau a le temps de se préparer pour appréhender sciemment la situation chaotique à venir ! Pour autant l’information n’a aucun effet sur la prévention du « barbouillage » ! Et si de mon côté, les embruns frais en pleine figure me font du bien, les bonbons à la menthe adoucissent fortement le confort de Cyril. Par 25 nœuds de vent, si le courant ne s’en était pas mêlé, nous aurions peut-être un peu moins ramassé mais notre Lion dans ces conditions, extériorise dans de forts rugissements, son plaisir. Il rebondit, s’élance, fend les vagues, à coup de déferlantes se fait asperger pour mieux s’ébattre et reprend en s’ébrouant cette cadence infernale ! Son comportement marin n’est plus à prouver, mais à chacune de nos navigations, il semble vouloir renforcer la confiance que nous lui portons ! Cette allure agitée doit avoir un effet sur le frétillement du poulpe coloré que nous faisons trainer dans le mousseux sillage de Blacky ! Je ne vois pas d’autres explications ! Un thon jaune, les bananes, nous venons de choper un thon jaune, juste à quelques milles de la fameuse Fanjove ! Dépendante de l’archipel de Songosongo, l’île fait partie d’un groupe de six, appartenant à une compagnie de tourisme locale. Outre les informations relatives à l’hôtel qui s’y trouve, l’histoire de ce javeau reste imprécise, du moins sur le web car en farfouillant, le phare nous indiquera que sa construction remonte à 1894. Pour ce qui est de sa situation géographique, étant sur place, les détails sont évidemment moins vagues ! Bien à l’Est de ses consœurs, cette petite parcelle de terre ou plutôt de sable, à un peu plus de cent milles nautiques de Dar Es Salam n’a rien à envier à un îlot paradisiaque, sauf peut-être pour nous, le mouillage ! Parce que figurez-vous que cela ne fait pas tout d’exhiber de belles plages immaculées, d’exposer fièrement de superbes rochers en forme de champignons au-dessus d’une eau turquoise et de servir de nidification à de superbes oiseaux échassier ! Pour pouvoir bénéficier des cinq étoiles dans le guide Michelin Blacky, tout compte, en particulier le mouillage et là les cocos, il y a faille. La belle a beau avoir de beaux attributs, elle ne rentre pas dans l’excellence de nos attentes, du moins en cette saison. Non, parce qu’il ne faut quand même pas exagérer, nous ne pouvons décemment pas donner le classement d’une qualité optimale à celle qui a fait de notre ancrage, le maëlstrom d’une nuit ! Houspillés du déclin à l’aube et ne voulant pas partir de nuit, l’heure du départ s’est faite attendre et dès le potron-minet, nous prenions la mer ! Comme un mouillage protégé peut devenir un soulagement après une dure traversée, une navigation peut s’avérer une rémission après le tumulte d’une nuit de mouillage, et dans le souffle baissant du vent, nous sentons nos corps se détendre ! Comble de notre apaisement, pas un, mais deux thazars complèterons de vingt-cinq repas notre garde-manger. Continuant sur notre lancée, nous laissons l’alizée nous porter tout près de Okuzaï, petite sœur de Fanjove, mais qu’elle ne s’y trompe, nous n’allons pas nous faire berner deux fois et ce n’est pas ses beaux yeux bleus verts qui vont nous faire succomber au désir de nous arrêter pour contempler le galbe de ses formes célestes ! Ne faudrait quand même pas prendre le Tchoupi et la Jacouille pour des « kikidubistouquins » … Celle qui aurait pu être notre thébaïde rouleuse s’éloigne pendant que nous visons notre prochain objectif, Mafia island. Connue pour sa population de requins-baleines, l’île en fait un point fort touristique et au moment où j’évoque cette particularité avec mon capitaine, les geysers de deux baleines à bosse jaillissent à quelques mètres de Black lion et font retrouver à nos âmes, celles de deux enfants ! Dans la fraîcheur Tanzanienne de cette fin d’après-midi, nous approchons de Tirene Bay au Sud-Ouest de Mafia. Avec les sondes côtières peu profondes sur plusieurs mètres et les différences de marnage, nous devons ancrer à plus de 800 mètres de la plage de Kilindoni, mais le bateau est bien immobilisé dans un fond sableux. Le souci d’une telle distance entre le rivage et nous, c’est qu’il faut bien calculer le niveau de la mer lors des descentes à terre, au risque de se retrouver coincé le temps d’une marée basse et c’est justement ce qui stress mon bébé durant la tâche administrative qui nous incombe. Il serait « balo » de se retrouver bloqués sur la grève jusqu’en milieu de nuit !

Today our children got to experience what they would have to endure if they did hurt themselves, not just on the boat but ever. One of our fellow cruisers cut his foot really badly whilst out surfing. Luckily we have all the kit on board to deal with wounds. In times like these the last thing you want to do is go and sit in foreign emergency rooms and put your self at risk of contracting more than just a cut foot. Before we left for this adventure I did a very comprehensive Ships Doctors Medical Course, which taught me suture and wound closure techniques. The course involved us actually doing the sutures but fortunately not on a real patient. Fortunately for Charlie the surfer, there is also a Spanish ER nurse in our anchorage. So instead of subjecting him to my inexperienced hands, we called Anabel over to do the job. It also gave me a fantastic refresher on what to do if it ever happens to us whilst we have no help to hand. We first cleaned the wound. Then gave Charlie an anaesthetic. Anabel then proceeded to insert 12 sutures in the very large and deep cut. Charlie was also given a course of antibiotics to take just in case of infection setting in. Our boys Dylan 13 and Nathan 9 were very interested in the procedure, and happily sat through the entire thing. It’s not very often that children get hands on real life learning like this! Hopefully it has also taught them what happens when you really hurt yourself, and that Mum and Dad are not just being nags and fun spoilers. All in all it was a good exercise - not for Charlie but for all of us. Anabel also got to practise her profession which she is missing! A abertura da 47ª Semana Internacional de Vela de Ilhabela – Virtual Edition ocorreu na noite desta segunda-feira (27) com o MIT Talks – ciclo de palestras sobre o segmento – e uma introdução ao Virtual Regatta, simulador de provas que será usado a partir desta terça-feira (28) por mais de 70 jogadores virtuais. Mais de 300 pessoas acessaram os canais digitais e o site oficial para assistir as quatro horas de programação inédita e treinar com o simulador. Nomes como Marina Klink, Carlo Borlenghi, Família Schurmann e o atleta Jorge Zarif falaram sobre suas experiências na Semana de Vela de Ilhabela. Pela primeira vez, o maior evento náutico da América do Sul adotou regatas virtuais. A solenidade teve a tradicional queima de fogos inaugural, só que dessa vez tudo remoto como manda a regra de 2020. Nas edições anteriores, a festa ocorreu na Vila da Regata, no centro histórico de Ilhabela. As primeiras provas online da Semana Internacional de Vela de Ilhabela foram disputadas nesta terça-feira (28) por meio do simulador Virtual Regatta. A competição contou com mais de 70 velejadores divididos em quatro baterias: Azul, Amarela, Verde e Branca. Os participantes correram duas regatas cada na versão inshore do game nas raias virtuais de Marselha (França) e Sydney (Austrália), e cada uma com um tipo de barco barcos: J70 e Offshore. Na Flotilha branca quem lidera é Ricardo Paranhos, mais conhecido na vela como Canelão. O atleta, que faz campanha olímpica para a classe 470 com Rodolfo Streibel, venceu uma regata e terminou a outra em segundo lugar. ”Comecei a jogar o jogo Virtual Regatta durante a quarentena como uma maneira de manter a cabeça ativa e correndo já que os treinos na vida real estavam paralisados”. ”Hoje felizmente consegui velejar bem nas duas regatas. Consegui fazer boas largadas, o que facilitaram o resto”, disse Ricardo Paranhos do perfil dele é o @Canelão_470. O parceiro de Ricardo Paranhos na classe 470 Rodolfo Streibel está em sétimo lugar na Flotilha Amarela, que tem Marcos Guedes Calonico @Caipirinha como líder. Na Flotilha Verde, Ader Santos é o líder no geral com barco/perfil @Samis ARMAZÉN NAVAL. ”Nível alto! Se você não entrar concentrado desde o início fica bem difícil de recuperar”. ”No último minuto é fundamental verificar as rajadas e birutas. Ou você larga no lugar certo, ou fica no segundo pelotão em poucos segundos”. Um dos nomes de destaque da vela também está presente nas regatas da Semana Internacional de Vela de Ilhabela – Virtual Edition. Nick Pellicano Grael, filho de Lars Grael, se inscreveu para as regatas com o barco @NickGrael49er e está em terceiro lugar na Verde. ”As regatas estão sendo muito bem organizadas como sempre! O nível dos competidores está cada vez mais forte com o passar da pandemia e as pessoas tendo muito tempo para jogar!”, disse Nick Grael. ”Está cada vez mais difícil!!! Consegui ir bem hoje e vamos ver ver como me saio amanhã!”. Na Azul, o melhor desta terça-feira foi o perfil @philipp_ de Phillip Grochtmann. Nesta quarta-feira (29), serão disputadas mais regatas eliminatórias em três raias virtuais diferentes: Newport (EUA), Porto Cervo (Itália) e Maiorca (Espanha). The new Portsmouth Yardstick racing platform has launched! As a new benefit for member organizations, US Sailing has partnered with the Royal Yachting Association to create a more robust platform for Portsmouth Yardstick Racing using the PYOnline platform. The accuracy of the ratings is one of the key advantages. The ratings will become more accurate over time, ensuring that competition stays fresh on the water. This means no one boat or class is guaranteed a win or loss based upon ratings alone. Each club will have ratings that are based on their local conditions. US Sailing will update the national ratings for a given class on an annual basis, based upon the ratings used by the individual clubs. Portsmouth Yardstick racing becomes better, more robust and more fun with more clubs and sailors participating.
