Avoiding heavy weather - Our longest ever Pacific Voyage - Marshall Islands to Fiji. This week we are travelling in one of the remotest parts of the Pacific Ocean- Between the Kiribati group and Tuvalu. With heavy weather forecast for our approach to Fiji we slow down and heave to while waiting for the weather to pass. In the meantime we are kept very busy with squalls and avoiding a large number of fishing vessels. We are Jo and Rob and we are here to share our sailing adventures with you. In 2016, inspired by the likes of 'Delos', 'Sailing La Vagabonde' and 'Gone with The Wynns', we sold up everything we owned and bought our 40ft, Fountaine Pajot 'Lipari 41 Evo' sailing catamaran 'Double Trouble'. We had no sailing experience whatsoever, so the past few years have been a huge learning curve. We thought it might be fun to document our travels for anyone thinking of following a similar lifestyle. So far we have visited 7 different countries and sailed over 13,000 nautical miles. We have had many unique experiences that would not have been possible in our prior life and we don't regret a second. We're both super keen on protecting our precious environment, so amongst other things, we both follow a plant based diet. You wont find any fishing footage on this channel! Future SAILING Plans and Preparation. Where TO From HERE? After getting back from the remote Ailuk Lagoon this week we settle back into life in Majuro. With shops, postal services and internet it is a busy time. Covid 19 has limited our options on open destinations around the pacific. So we catch up on a lot of boat maintenance and also start researching our future sailing plans - Deciding we want to head to New Zealand via Fiji. A Marshallese Celebration and a sad goodbye We sail up and down Ailuk Lagoon to celebrate a special birthday. With a new yacht arriving, we head to the southern part of the atoll and meet up with the crew from SV Manna. While we are there we meet up with Emily and Pumpkin and get invited to celebrate Emilys birthday. We have just enough time to fit some windsurfing in before the party starts. We then see a good weather window for us to start our trip back to Majuro, so after a fond farewell to Emily and Pumpkin we get ready to leave this beautiful atoll. Sailing A Perfect Day in Ailuk Lagoon Sailing the Marshall Islands A perfect sailing day for us on anchor in Ailuk Lagoon. With no wind we get the toys out and get some great Drone shots while paddle boarding. A fun filled day was had, swimming, paddle boarding and a scuba dive. We take Dave the Dinghy out to the Outer reef and dive a crystal clear blue wall. Our best day on the water. Sailing Catamaran mast climb and Rig Check. We climb the mast on our sailing catamaran In this video we show how we go up the 12 metres mast of 'Double Trouble'. Safety is paramount and we always use a main and backup line as well as a good harness and rope handling techniques. Jo supervises from the deck while I go up the mast and check for chafe and wear of the various stays, rigging attachments, ropes and electronics that make up our mast. Fortunately there is not too much to worry about this time, so it is another job ticked off the list. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ ?? Sailing, Capsize and rescue canoe Capsize and rescue of Marshall Islands canoe Sailing Canoe capsize and rescue in the Marshall Islands A Traditional pacific canoe capsizes next to us when we are on anchor at Ailuk Lagoon in the Marshall Islands. The five visiting yachts all head over in their dinghy and help rescue the crew. We drag the overturned and damaged vessel to the shallows where we turn it back over and leave the crew to make their way to shore so they can continue the repairs. We also enjoy the underwater delights of Ailuk and hang out in another stunning anchorage. Pacific PARADISE and a PLASTIC problem. This week we explore the underwater world of Ailuk lagoon and have a beach walk around one of the small islets in the lagoon. We are horrified by how much fishing gear, plastic and rubbish washes up on the windward side of the atoll. A sad reminder of the ever increasing global plastic problem. Mark's Birthday is a great excuse for another beach picnic and sundowners. Sailing LAID Back Lagoon LIFE in the Marshall Islands LAID Back Lagoon LIFE- Ailuk atoll, Marshall Islands Ailuk atoll, Marshall Islands This week, we start our lagoon life at Ailuk atoll! We were given permission to travel to Ailuk Atoll to deliver essential food suppliers on behalf of Mayor Typhoon, so along with Mark and Angie, the crew from our buddy boat 'Uno Mas' , we waste no time in dropping off lots of flour, rice, sugar, coffee and spices, before sharing a drinking coconut and morning tea with locals ,Pumpkin and Emily We spend time diving within the lagoon where we sadly discover the much of the coral has been badly damaged and bleached, but we do see a couple of schools of fish and have a really relaxed swim-by from an eagle ray, We also enjoy a beach picnic and sundowners with the crews from 'Forever' and 'Offshore Haven'. Bluewater SAILING passage Majuro to Ailuk Atoll SAILING the Marshall Islands Two nights to Ailuk Atoll This week we leave Majuro and travel 240 miles north to Ailuk Atoll, in what we think is a good weather window. It turns out that we time it perfectly so that we have to dodge squalls that come across every hour or so! Mark and Angie from 'Uno Mas' were about five to ten miles in front of us and missed just about every squall, so if we had started our trip an hour earlier we would have had a much smoother trip! Once in the shelter of Aur and Maloelap atolls we have some lovely sailing and the squalls lessen as we near Ailuk. After waiting for good light we negotiate the reef pass and drop the hook in front of Ailuk Village on the South east side of the atoll. We celebrate with an early night after a very tiring two days! Sailing Traditional Pacific CANOES Sailing Pacific Traditional CANOES Marshall Islands From Workshop to Water - Traditional Canoes of the Pacific Building and Sailing Traditional Pacific Canoes From WORKSHOP to WATER - Sailing Traditional CANOES of the Pacific - EP75 When an awesome traditionally designed pacific canoe anchors next to us at Eneco in Majuro, we post about it on our social media feeds. We are contacted by Henrik who is teaching a three month course on canoe building at W.A.M. (Waan Aelon in Majel) a boat and canoe building school in Majuro. We have seen a range of local canoes in our travels around the Pacific so we are pleasantly surprised to see a real passion and interest in building sailing craft in the Marshall Islands. The Three month course Henrik and Rob are teaching is focused on giving the students the skills and knowledge they need so they can go back to their homes on the outer islands and work on building their own sailing craft. Two designs were chosen to best represent a more modern approach to building - a Catamaran design loosely based on a Wharram Tiki 21 and an Australian design called a Harrproa. Henrik and Rob go for a fast sail across the Majuro lagoon to show off the suspension system on a traditional sailing canoe. STOLEN DINGHY and Marshall Islands Visa Renewals! EP74 This week we being the somewhat lengthy procedure to renew our Marshall Islands visas. Due to Covid 19, we can't safely get back to NZ, so we have to apply for a one year visitor visa. We spend a lot of time at the local hospital, getting medical checks done and finally manage to complete all of the paperwork only to be thwarted by immigration... Then there's a drama in the anchorage as we apprehend a dinghy thief after a high speed chase.... Sailing, A SCARY NIGHT at Anchor A SCARY NIGHT at Anchor and a DIVE into HISTORY We anchor at Ollat Island where we are asked to help a medical team visiting from Majuro. Their ice packs are rapidly melting and the vaccines they are carrying are in danger of spoiling... We dive on a couple of wrecks that have a very famous history and snorkel with a beautiful Zebra shark . We then have a VERY scary night at anchor as a midnight squall swings us towards some shallow coral. Please subscribe to our channel if you enjoy these videos . sailing to DESERT Islands DESERT Islands and DRONE Fun ?? Support our videos: https://ko-fi.com/sailingdoubletrouble Pigotti Island was used by the Japanese in World War 2 to provide electricity to Taroa island. Today it is pretty much deserted. We explore the remains of the generator building and stumble over old bomb casings on the beach. Daisy is finally allowed to take to the skies and brings us back some beautiful shots. We cool off with some snorkelling and we enjoy the company of a hunting octopus or two....
