My new Island Spirit 525 electric catamaran is finally getting close to leaving the factory! In this episode, I head back to the Island Spirit factory in Thailand to check on the progress of my boat build, and it looks like we are only about 12 days away from getting her out of the factory. But of course, boat projects always come with surprises. During transport, a major component of my boat was damaged — a big hole was punched in the boom. Luckily, it is not the end of the world. The factory had a spare boom in stock, so we are swapping it out and keeping the build moving forward. We spent our last day aboard the Island Spirit 525e charter boat, making the most of a beautiful day on the water before sailing her back to the marina. We hit the beach, enjoyed one last cruise, and the girls soaked up the sun before heading home. But after the fun was over, I had to share some disappointing news: my new Island Spirit 525e build has been delayed yet again. I don’t have a firm delivery timeline yet, but it’s looking like it could be a while before my boat is finally ready. It’s frustrating, but that’s part of the adventure. In this episode of Sailing Doodles, we explore some of the most famous spots in Phang Nga Bay, Thailand. We begin in the floating village of Koh Panyi, where we hire a traditional Thai longtail boat and head through the mangroves and sea caves. We’re still a few weeks away from my own Island Spirit 525 being ready, so instead of sitting around waiting, we head to Phuket and jump aboard Island Spirit 525 Hull 4 for an amazing sailing adventure. In this video, I give you a full tour of the boat so you can see what this new 525 is all about while we wait on my own Hull 5. Then my new crew and I leave the dock, hoist the sails, and head out into the beautiful waters around Phuket. After two nights at anchor at Koh Sichang near Pattaya, we pull up anchor and sail back toward mainland Thailand. Just south of Pattaya, we find a beautiful anchorage and head ashore, only to discover we’ve landed in the middle of an unexpected powerboat race with multiple classes and divisions. It was an awesome surprise and something we definitely didn’t expect to see on this sailing trip. The next morning, we set sail for Monkey Island (Koh Ped / Koh Ling), hoping to catch the monkeys down on the beach before heading back to Pattaya and the marina. After a peaceful night at anchor off Koh Larn, we woke up to the bay filling with jet skis and tour boats, so it was time to move on. Unfortunately, I was already feeling terrible from something I ate the night before. We got the boat underway and made the 10-mile run north to Koh Sichang, a much more industrial island with a completely different vibe. Chloe, the dogs, and I made it ashore for lunch, but I was still feeling too rough to do much exploring. My $1.5M electric catamaran is finally making progress… but somehow it still doesn’t look like it. We woke up anchored off Ao Salat on Koh Kood after one of the calmest nights we’ve had in Thailand. From there, we pulled anchor and set sail 18 miles north toward Koh Wai… with a thunderstorm building right in our path. After dodging the weather, we made it safely to Koh Wai and grabbed a mooring just off the beach. And honestly… this place might be one of the best-kept secrets in Thailand. You can stay here for: Ocean view bungalows for around $15/night Beachfront bungalows for about $30/night And the food? Just as cheap. We spent the afternoon exploring the island, hanging out at one of the laid-back resorts, and soaking in the views. Today we explore one of the most unique places we've discovered while sailing in Thailand. We start the morning anchored off Bang Bao on Koh Kood, heading ashore in search of breakfast at a beautiful beachfront resort. Unfortunately… no luck. So we raise the sails and head around the island looking for our next adventure. What we find is incredible. On the far side of the island we discover a traditional Thai village built entirely over the water, stretching out along a long pier. Above the village sits a giant golden Buddha statue watching over the bay and protecting the fishermen and their families below. We woke up to an incredibly calm morning anchored in a beautiful bay at Koh Mak, Thailand. With the water like glass and the jungle surrounding us, it was the perfect start to the day. After taking the dinghy ashore, Chloe and I went exploring through the jungle and stumbled upon something we definitely weren’t expecting — a hidden “Love Garden” filled with unusual life-size sculptures tucked away among the trees. Chloe’s reaction was priceless! After that surprising discovery, we found a small beachside resort serving breakfast right on the sand… and it only cost $3 per person. Back on the boat, we hoisted the sails and made our way south to Koh Kood, one of the most beautiful islands in Thailand. The bay there was absolutely stunning — crystal clear water, quiet beaches, and lush jungle everywhere. We dropped anchor, headed ashore, and discovered yet another gorgeous beach and resort tucked away on the island. Today’s adventure starts with a 5 hour road trip from Pattaya down to Koh Chang, where we jump aboard a Lagoon 400 catamaran for a beautiful sail through the islands of eastern Thailand. After a quick tour of the boat, we untie the lines and head out for an easy 10 mile sail south to Koh Mak. This part of Thailand has some of the most underrated cruising grounds in Southeast Asia — warm water, steady wind, and quiet tropical islands everywhere. Our destination is one of my favorite spots in the region… The Blue Pearl Bar on Koh Mak, an amazing little beach bar that’s perfect for watching the sunset after a great day on the water. Even better, the pups got to join us for the adventure, making it a perfect sailing day with the whole crew.
