요트의 워터탱크 수도 필터와 빌지펌프 필터, 그리고 수도 꼭지 필터를 청소했다. 얼마 전 워터탱크를 청소해서인지, 필터에는 미끌거리는 녹색 이물질이 제법 많이 끼어 있었다. 이런 필터를 주기적으로 관리해 주지 않으면 펌프가 고장 나기 쉽다. 하나하나 작업을 하다 보니 배관과 부속 부위들을 자연스럽게 살펴보게 되었고, 이 배가 처음 어떻게 설치되었는지도 함께 들여다볼 수 있었다. 요트라는 작은 삶의 공간 안에 생각보다 훨씬 많은 장비와 시설들이 들어가야 하다 보니, 배관과 부속들이 복잡하게 얽힌 채 설치되어 있다는 걸 새삼 느낀다. 요트 사용자는 그 편리함에 감탄하고, 요트 관리자는 그 복잡함에 감탄하는 것 같다. 오늘 같은 작업은 비교적 수월한 편이라, 서두르지 않고 쉬엄쉬엄 즐기듯 마무리했다.

Today we attempt to repair our aft water tank that recently leaked 60lt into the bilges through a small split in the Polyethylene. This is the second failure (the first one was in 2018) when the tank was replaced with a new one. Amazingly the failure in this tank is in exactly the same position as last time, making us believe this is a design fault. Before we go ahead and order a new one, we will attempt to carry out a weld repair, which is notoriously difficult to do without the correct tools and welding sticks. Can we do it with just a common soldering gun, and a piece of off cut from the tanks filler neck? Please leave your thoughts in the comments below. Adrienne Cahalan is not only one of the world’s most celebrated ocean racing navigators (she is a member of The Australian Sailing Hall of Fame and received an OAM in 2019), but she is also one of the most versatile. For many years she was the navigator aboard Wild Oats XI and in recent years she has played that pivotal role on yachts as diverse as the R/P66 Alive, to the Fastnet winning JPK11.80 Sunrise and this year aboard Andries Verder’s much-raced Marten 72 Aragon. She will be joined by Dutch ocean racer Carolijn Brouwer (Olympian and three-time Volvo Ocean Race crew member) who has sailed previously with Andries Verder.

Many will have followed Za Tucker and Cole Brauer’s long delivery passage of First Light from Spain to Sydney. Za Tucker had bought the boat from Cole Brauer who became the first US woman to sail solo non-stop around the world, finishing 2nd in the Solo Globe Challenge in 2023/24. Za is aiming to enter the 2027 edition of the Globe Solo Challenge; but in the meantime she is using her boat to give opportunities to women looking to take on skippering roles in ocean racing. Za will race First Light to Hobart in 2025 with five other female crew, all of whom gained their places onboard in a well-organised selection process, including time at sea.

Ever since Mark Richards acquired the famous Wild Oats XI -following a three year hiatus from the Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht Race - the challenge to complete the major upgrades to what is now named Palm Beach XI has made for a race against time to the starting gun on Boxing Day. We spoke to Mark Richards at Woolwich Dock, one week prior to the race start and shortly after Palm Beach XI had been christened and relaunched. Mark explained the rationale behind the new daggerboards, the lengthened keel, the dramatic C foils, stern elevator foils and the flatter sails. He also described the two year campaign program for the boat (both overseas and back in Australia) after this year’s race south. In closing the overview he acknowledged the vital role that Wild Oats XI’s owner Bob Oatley had played in the opportunity to realise this new dream for a world famous yacht.

Christian Beck caused quite a gasp amongst the media when he famously described his 100-footer LawConnect very unflatteringly, prior to his first race to Hobart. His tactic for painting LawConnect as the Hobart Line Honours under-dog has however proven that she is nothing of the sort, with the veteran 100 footer winning back-to-back Line Honours in 2023 and 2024. Whether she can pull off the three-peat remains to be seen, but the 2025 race will be something of a family affair with his wife and son both joining the team. The crew will also include multiple Olympic gold medal winning swimmer, Ian Thorpe.

David Witt and his team aboard the 100 footer SHK Scallywag have had a busy time racing internationally, since the boat last raced to Hobart in 2023. They won Lion Honours in the Middle Sea Race in 2024 and were just pipped to the post by Black Jack in the 2025 Rolex Fastnet Race. We caught up with Witty just after the Cabbage Tree Race and asked him about their preps for the Hobart, what weather would suit them best and some very interesting plans for SHK Scallywag in 2026 and beyond.

James Mayo was named as Australian Sailing’s Male Sailor of the Year in 2025, reflecting his extraordinary achievement in winning the Etchells World Championships in 2025, for the third time (his first was in 1999 and the second in 2024). The list of former winners of that much sought-after trophy reads like a Who’s Who of the world’s best sailors; so it’s no surprise to see James join Matt Allen and James’ Etchells crew-mate Graeme Taylor (GT) aboard Master Lock Comanche for another tilt at Line Honours in the race to Hobart.

There’s an unimaginable amount of work in pulling together a Hobart campaign for a 100-footer; so you can imagine the disappointment when your race is over on the first night at sea. Such was the case for Master Lock Comanche in 2024, with the team retiring with broken mainsail battens in the hard downwind running conditions. Undeterred, co-skippers Matt Allen and James Mayo decided to go again in 2025. Matt Allen explains what he and the team have been doing in 2025 in their attempt to gain the boat’s fifth Line Honours win in this famous race.
