Ready to master anchoring check out the NauticEd anchoring course - https://www.nauticed.org/sailing-courses/view/anchoring-a-sailboat?utm_source=youtube&utm_medium=video&utm_campaign=0tFx8l8Ymt4 Check out IMTRA for all your windlass needs (they are experts) - https://www.imtra.com --- Imtra breaks down the two most damaging windlass mistakes boaters / sailors make, why they happen, and exactly how to avoid them on any vessel. What this video covers: - Why the windlass is not a cleat and what to use instead - How wave action sends repeated shock loads back through the windlass while you are at anchor - Using a snubber or rope-chain rode to transfer load to your deck cleat, mooring bitt, or horn cleat - What happens to the main shaft in extreme storm conditions if you skip this step - Why you must run the ship's engine before operating the windlass - How low voltage caused by depleted batteries damages solenoid strike plates - causing arcing, burning, and the clicking sound that means your windlass will not engage - The correct technique: engine on, alternator charging, motor up into the wind rather than dragging the boat by the windlass The windlass exists to raise and lower the anchor. The deck hardware exists to hold the boat at anchor. Understanding this distinction is the foundation of proper windlass operation. CHAPTERS: 00:00 - Mistake One: Using Windlass as a Cleat 00:22 - Shock Loads and What They Do to the Windlass 00:38 - How to Transfer Load Using a Snubber or Rope-Chain Rode 00:55 - The Risk: Bent Shafts and Costly Repairs 01:24 - Mistake Two: Not Running the Engine Before Operating 01:52 - How Low Voltage Destroys Solenoid Strike Plates 02:28 - The Correct Windlass Technique #sailinggear #sailing #boating #boatinggear

Give it a thumbs up if you liked this episode! Light wind, heavy wipeouts, a camera strapped to the kite, and one very questionable decision after another… classic Sailing into Freedom. 😅🪁⛵ In this episode, I head back out for another kitesurf session in Vietnam, chasing waves in conditions that are just on the wrong side of powered. The wind keeps dropping right when I need it most, the kite stalls on the wave, and things get sketchy fast. There’s a raw look at how dangerous wave kiting can get when the power disappears, lines go slack, and you’re suddenly in the washing machine with surf, drag and zero margin for error. Of course, being Sailing into Freedom, I’ve also got a camera mounted on the kite, ignore my own advice not to crash it, and then proceed to absolutely send myself into the water hard enough to blow an eardrum and leave me wondering what else I may have broken. If you like kitesurfing action, wipeouts, real-world wave riding, and unfiltered commentary from someone who definitely should know better by now, this one’s for you. #kitesurfing #sailingintofreedom #kiteboarding #wavekiting #kitesurfcrash #extremesports #sailing #vietnam #actionvlog Get your Sailing Into Freedom Crew T-shirt: https://teespring.com/stores/sailing-into-freedom Want more? 🇺🇸 “BALI catamarans don’t sail.” Really? They’re often called dock condos or condomarans. And the criticism is always the same: “They’re not built for real offshore sailing.” In this video, we take that claim seriously. Stephen from Catamaran Guru and Boris from Catana Group break down what’s actually being judged: the boat, the setup, or the expectations. Charter specs vs owner specs. Sail plans, construction, structure, performance and real offshore miles — including an Atlantic crossing on a BALI 5.4. No shortcuts. No marketing talk. Just facts, experience and data. _____ 🇫🇷 « Les catamarans BALI ne naviguent pas vraiment. » Vraiment ? We don’t live in Port Protection, Alaska full time, but we’ve been here for a stretch working on a remote project, and this is what our days look like while we’re here. With foundation work paused while the concrete sets, we head out by skiff to Point Baker. Spend the day working on outboards, troubleshooting small engines, and sorting through a stack of generators to see what can be brought back to life. Back in Port Protection, the tide is coming up and the timbers we staged for the project need to be moved before they float off. We paddle out and get them higher above the waterline before the next high tide. This is day-to-day life working in remote Alaska. Boat access, changing weather, mechanical problem solving, and staying ahead of the tides. If you’re interested in off grid living, boat life in Alaska, remote coastal work, and what it actually takes to live and work in places like Port Protection and Point Baker, you’re in the right place. ⏱️ CHAPTERS: 00:00 Morning in Port Protection (sun, snow, sun) 00:19 Skiff ride plan + heading to Point Baker 00:45 Mixing fuel + trying the outboard 02:07 Starlink in the wilderness (still getting spam calls) 02:32 Dead battery + switching to the generator 02:53 Generator troubleshooting begins 04:50 Getting it running 05:56 Trying out the foil 07:48 Skiff ride + birds + tide talk 09:46 Arriving near Point Baker 10:26 Heading back through changing weather 11:10 Back in Port Protection 11:17 Stack of old generators (what works, what doesn’t) 13:02 Progress on the generators 13:57 Back to the skiff 14:42 Quiet reset at the cabin 15:08 Planning to paddle out 15:20 Heading to check the timbers 17:30 Moving timbers above the tide line 22:23 Final push before high tide 22:45 End of the day

Like many people in Japan and around the world, I was saddened by the recent boating tragedy off Henoko in Okinawa, where a 17-year-old high school student and a 71-year-old captain lost their lives. I’ve been asked by many viewers to comment—particularly in comparison to the La Vagabonde incident. These are very different situations, and in this video I aim to clarify what matters: the legal framework, the captain's role, weather advisories, and the shared responsibility of everyone who steps on board. This story also resonates with me personally. I am a 71-year-old captain of a small vessel. I have served on the board of a school. And I am a grandfather whose grandson goes on school trips like this. The captain's age in this case has also raised important questions—especially in a country like Japan, where people remain active, licensed, and engaged well into later life. Experience brings wisdom, but it does not remove risk. This is not about assigning blame. It is about understanding responsibility—legal, cultural, and practical—and how safety at sea depends on every link in the chain. If this video helps even one person think more carefully before stepping on board, it will have served its purpose. — Lowell Lowell Sheppard is a sailor, author, and Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society, sharing insights on longevity, community, and life in Japan through the Pacific Solo channel and Never Too Late Academy. #BoatSafety #Japan #Okinawa #Seamanship #MarineSafety #PacificSolo #Longevity #HealthyAging #JapanLife #Leadership

Ocean Alexander proudly announces the completion of its Puro Series with the introduction of the new 30P and 40P, joining the 35P to form a fully realized trilogy. First unveiled in March 2024 with the announcement of the 35P, and brought to life at FLIBS 2024, the Puro Series now stands complete. Both the 30P and 40P are set to make their world debut at the Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show in 2026. This is an important moment for Ocean Alexander, not simply because two new yachts are being introduced, but because the full idea behind Puro can now be seen as it was always intended. What began with the 35P has grown into a complete family of yachts with a shared point of view, one centred on purity of form, calm confidence, and a more refined expression of life on the water. Please note: Alexander Marine is the official Ocean Alexander Yachts dealer for Australia and New Zealand. As such, we benefit from superior product knowledge and the ongoing resources of the Ocean Alexander factory and production staff. Buy your next Ocean Alexander yacht with utmost confidence via our office. Late last year, we visited the Viking Yachts factory to check in and film a behind-the-scenes look at what truly sets Viking apart. Seeing the Viking factory in person is something special. From hull construction through to final fit-out, it offers a rare look at the depth of craftsmanship and the range of options available across each model. Very few production builders provide this level of flexibility, visibility, and attention to detail throughout the build process. At the core of it all is a simple philosophy. Build a better boat every day. No cutting corners. No shortcuts. Just an uncompromising commitment to quality, performance, and continual improvement.

Why are whales sinking sailboats? Over the last few years, reports of orcas attacking sailboats have exploded across the sailing world, particularly off the coasts of Spain, Portugal, and the Strait of Gibraltar. Sailors have reported killer whales targeting rudders, disabling steering, and in some cases sinking boats entirely. But what’s really going on here? Are these whales hunting boats, playing with them, or reacting to something humans did? In this video, we break down the real evidence behind orca encounters with sailboats, including documented attacks, the science behind whale behavior, and the theories researchers are investigating. We’ll look at why rudders seem to be the main target, how often these incidents actually happen, and what sailors can do if they encounter a pod of curious or aggressive killer whales at sea. If you sail offshore, cruise internationally, or just love strange ocean mysteries, this is a story you need to understand. Need a consult? My $1.5M electric catamaran is finally making progress… but somehow it still doesn’t look like it. In this episode I head back to the Island Spirit factory in Thailand for a full behind-the-scenes update on the build. It’s been a couple weeks since my last visit, and while a LOT has been done behind the scenes, from the outside it’s hard to tell. So I climb onboard and show you exactly what’s changed—and what hasn’t. While at the factory, I also catch something pretty incredible… Hull #6 being pulled out of the mold using massive cranes. You don’t usually get to see how these boats are actually built, and this was wild. Back in Pattaya, I prep my new Highfield dinghy, start planning a stereo install, and show all the tools and spare parts I’ve been stocking up on for the new boat. And then Chloe takes me to a Thai night market where things get… interesting. Durian, pig’s feet, chicken intestines—she tries it all. This build has been a rollercoaster, but we’re getting closer.
