For decades, cruisers gathered in Grenada because it sat just below the hurricane box that shaped many marine insurance policies. In July 2024, Hurricane Beryl flattened Carriacou and turned Tyrell Bay into a boat graveyard, shattering the industry's faith in that safe zone. We live a pretty unconventional life aboard an 80-foot schooner in Alaska, and we don’t meet many other families living anything quite like we do. Then we met Elizabeth, Sterling and their three young children. Their home is Sage, a 32-foot sailboat that carries their family through Southeast Alaska as they move between remote building projects, fishing grounds, small communities and the everyday realities of raising kids aboard. Elizabeth grew up around commercial fishing but struggled with severe anxiety on boats when she was younger. She never imagined that one day she would be raising three children aboard one. Now Sage has carried every one of their babies, taken their family through beautiful sailing and difficult weather, and become part of a life she says she can hardly imagine living without. We met their family while our boats were anchored together in Southeast Alaska, and something clicked. We worked together, fished together, cruised together, and watched our kids move happily back and forth between Sage and the Alaskan Gypsy. As another mom living an unconventional life aboard in Alaska, meeting Elizabeth felt surprisingly significant to me. In this video, we get a glimpse into their real life: hauling anchor by hand, fishing with the kids, traveling to remote job sites, making laundry and food and heat work in a very small space, and navigating the beautiful chaos of raising three children on a boat. And after spending weeks around their family, I finally step aboard Sage for the very first time to see how five people actually live in 32 feet. This isn’t really a boat tour. It’s a story about family, resourcefulness, motherhood, friendship, and finding someone who understands the unusual life you’ve chosen. Thanks to Elizabeth, Sterling and their family for letting us share a little piece of their world. A cosa serve? I initially wanted to make this video describing every feature I ever wanted to find in a sailboat. “My dream pocket-cruiser.” Somewhere along the way, I re-discovered an old favorite, I guess I can’t quit thinking about. Designed by the legend who built the brick house of small cruising sailboats. I hope you like the video. Thanks for stopping by.

Should solo sailors be banned from the water at age 65? Let's discuss the reality of staying active on the open ocean. Recent discussions have raised questions about whether experienced solo sailors should face restrictions based on their age. This discussion examines the debate surrounding these proposed sailing safety measures and what they mean for those of us who love life on the water. It is a personal reflection for anyone concerned about the future of independent cruising. I share my thoughts on whether age should dictate our ability to pursue our passions. Whether you are planning your own sailing adventures or simply interested in the regulations governing our community, this conversation aims to clarify the perspective of those actually out on the water. Sailing Guadeloupe with the family ⛵ Another beautiful stretch of Caribbean cruising! We start out anchored in Malendure, where it’s time to tackle one of the less glamorous parts of boat life — the grocery run! With the boat stocked up, we jump into the clear Caribbean water for another incredible snorkel before raising the sails and heading back north along Guadeloupe’s spectacular coastline. Our destination is Deshaies, one of our favorite little towns in Guadeloupe, where we meet back up with SV Camino a buddy boat and get to enjoy cruising with friends again. Of course, we can’t stay out of the water for long! There’s more snorkeling in Anse Leroux, and family fun before we head out on a hike to Anse à Sable. Hidden along the coast, we go back to the natural hot springs right beside the sea — the perfect ending to another day of exploring Guadeloupe. This is what we love about cruising the Caribbean: sailing, snorkeling, hiking, discovering hidden places and sharing the adventure as a family. 🌴🌊 Thanks for following along with our sailing family as we continue exploring the Caribbean aboard our sailboat! #SailingGuadeloupe #Guadeloupe #SailingFamily #FamilySailing #CaribbeanSailing #SailingCaribbean #BoatLife #LiveaboardFamily #SailingWithKids #Deshaies #Malendure #AnseASable #SnorkelingGuadeloupe #CaribbeanAdventure #SailingLife #FamilyAdventure #CruisingFamily #LiveaboardLife #SailboatLife #WildlyIntrepid 👍 Enjoy the video? ► Vision Yachts held the first European edition of its Vision Days from August 28 to 30 at Port Ginesta, near Barcelona. ► Three catamarans were brought together for the occasion: one Vision 444 and two 444ES models, the latter featuring extended aft platforms. These multihulls, which have already logged between 20,000 and 27,000 miles (hard to believe given their excellent condition), were open for visits in the mornings before heading out for sailing sessions in the afternoons. ► On the dock, the Vision Days took on the feel of a mini boat show thanks to the presence of several equipment partners: North Sails, Nanni, Gori Propellers, Parasailor, Integrel and Cyclops Marine. The Owners of the catamarans on display were also there to share their bluewater cruising experiences and feedback on their boats with the 40 registered participants. ► Multihulls World was, of course, at Port Ginesta to discover the event and share it with you. ► Based in Knysna, Vision Yachts has been building offshore cruising catamarans since 2017 and is now looking to accelerate its development in Europe. Already represented in the Balearic Islands, the United Kingdom and Germany, the builder reports 38 boats sold, mainly to North American Owners. Its current range includes the 444 and 444ES, soon to be joined by the Vision 484, currently under construction and with four boats already on order. ► www.visionyachts.com ► Become a FREE SUBSCRIBER to Multihulls World's YouTube page now - https://www.youtube.com/c/MultihullsWorld ► Log on to our website to discover over 600 multihulls tests! Sustainable boating doesn’t have to mean compromising on comfort. In fact, a few simple changes can make life onboard even better. 🌿⚓ In Part 1 of our sustainable boating series, we explore practical ways to reduce your impact while cruising: ✓ Use solar panels, lithium batteries and smart energy management to reduce generator use ✓ Install water makers and filtration systems to minimise single-use plastic bottles ✓ Choose reef-safe sunscreen and biodegradable cleaning products ✓ Reduce waste by buying in bulk and using reusable containers ✓ Plan meals around local produce and long-life ingredients ✓ Create a recycling system onboard, even if it means storing recyclables until you reach shore ✓ Use eco detergents, grey water filters and smart storage solutions to minimise waste and clutter Sustainability and comfort can absolutely go hand in hand. Sometimes, all it takes is the first step. What sustainable habits have you adopted onboard? 👇

Season 6 starts here! 🌊⛵ After an incredible season in South Africa, it’s time to point Happy Days west and head out into the South Atlantic. Our next stop: the tiny, remote island of St Helena — 1,650 nautical miles and 11 days at sea. And this passage gives us a little bit of everything… a foggy farewell to South Africa, beautiful downwind sailing under Big Purple (Miss Violet), fishing gear that quite literally explodes, fresh food that all seems to ripen at once, school, work, boat jobs and all the everyday chaos of six people living together at sea. Somewhere along the way, the days begin to blur and passage life simply becomes normal. Then, after 11 days with nothing but ocean around us, a seriously impressive rock finally begins to emerge through the clouds. Land Ho — St Helena! 🇺🇸 On the second day, sleep deprivation made it hard to do even the simplest things, like closing the cap on a water bottle, telling whether it was sunrise or sunset, or controlling my emotions. I swung between feeling extremely sad, irritated, and indifferent. I cried and laughed over the slightest thing. The ice was hidden among the waves, and I could only see it when I got too close. I lost my sense of humor, which was perhaps my secret weapon. I felt neither hunger nor thirst, nor any sense of danger. I simply existed and swerved, hoping to see open, liquid water.

In this episode, hosts Bela Musits and Mike Wasserman dive deep into one of the most iconic offshore challenges in the sailing world: the Marion to Bermuda Race. Joining the conversation is seasoned sailor Ray Cullum, who shares his extensive experience navigating this prestigious 645-mile blue-water event. Whether you are a competitive racer or an aspiring coastal cruiser looking to head offshore, Ray’s insights into preparation, Gulf Stream strategy, and the unique spirit of this race are invaluable. The Marion to Bermuda Race is renowned for its focus on celestial navigation and its "family and friends" atmosphere, setting it apart from other offshore competitions. Ray breaks down what it takes to prepare both the vessel and the crew for the unpredictable conditions of the North Atlantic. From heavy weather tactics to the mental endurance required for multi-day offshore passages, this episode covers the essential elements of successful blue-water sailing. Bela, Mike, and Ray also discuss the intricacies of crossing the Gulf Stream—a pivotal and often daunting segment of the journey to Bermuda. Ray shares his approach to analyzing weather routing and current data to find the most efficient path through the "river in the ocean." We also explore the gear and safety protocols that are non-negotiable for an offshore voyage of this magnitude. Beyond the technical aspects, this episode captures the allure of the destination itself. Arriving in Bermuda after days at sea is a milestone for any sailor, and Ray describes the sense of accomplishment and the camaraderie that awaits at the Royal Hamilton Amateur Dinghy Club. If you’ve ever dreamed of leaving the coast behind and heading for the deep blue, this conversation will provide the inspiration and practical knowledge you need to start planning your own Marion to Bermuda adventure. About the Guest: Ray Cullum is a veteran sailor with a wealth of experience in offshore racing and coastal cruising. His passion for the sea and commitment to the sailing community make him a sought-after voice for anyone looking to improve their seamanship and navigation skills. Key Topics Discussed: Preparation and safety requirements for the Marion to Bermuda Race. Strategies for navigating the Gulf Stream and interpreting weather data. The importance of crew dynamics and watch rotations during offshore passages. Celestial navigation vs. modern electronics in traditional racing. The rewards of finishing a major offshore race in Bermuda. 7 days until I sail alone around the world. 😳 And today we tackled one of the BIG jobs… food. Eight months at sea means a ridiculous amount of it has to somehow fit inside Showgirl. I’ve got some of my favourite gluten-free options from Schär, Food Tactics for those days when cooking is absolutely not happening and I just need something quick and nutritious, and of course my protein powder from Glucose Goddess. Food Force also sent me food, including some non-gluten-free options. Those obviously can’t stay with me, so hopefully some of the other GGR participants will happily give them a home. 😂 And because eight months is a very long time to wonder “Wait… do I still have any of those left?”, everything is going into an Excel sheet so I can keep track of exactly what I have onboard. There’s still more food coming, but some of it is officially packed and ready for the journey. ✅ Still SO much to do. One week. That’s it. Follow along for the final week of preparing Showgirl and myself for eight months alone at sea. 🌍⛵ ⚓ Life on the Showgirl is my journey toward one of the toughest solo sailing races on the planet: the Golden Globe Race — sailed solo, non-stop, and without modern technology. The first segment from Key West back to Biscayne Bay has you steering ENE, which frequently means that either one is going to slog into the prevailing easterlies, or wait for a southerly slant. Being gaff rigged and engineless, I opt for the latter. But that does mean some waiting, and as the weather models are never 100% accurate, you may end up doing some slogging after all. Barbate is where the boats the orcas have attacked end up. We left Gibraltar at sunrise and sailed straight past it. This is the stretch of coast every sailor going to the Atlantic has to cross, and there is no answer to it. The advice is to hug the shore in about five metres of water, so we did — hand on the wheel the whole way, because if an orca hits a boat with the autopilot engaged it destroys the autopilot too. Flat sea, clear sky, the kind of day you should be sailing for pleasure, and instead we spent it watching the water for fins. Before any of that could happen the wind instrument had to be fixed. It was reading five knots in thirty, the only chandlery in Gibraltar sells almost nothing, and there is no crane in the yard to get anyone up the mast. So the Furuno sensor went on the stern arch two metres off the deck, which meant cutting into the cable — a thing I have had to do once before and was hoping to avoid twice. Then Cape Trafalgar, where the fishing nets run all the way to the beach and push you out into exactly the deep water you have been avoiding all day. A regatta none of the competitors seemed able to navigate. A week anchored off Rota with a dead watermaker and no showers. And, at the end of it, another sailboat leaving harbour a few minutes ahead of us and unknowingly doing us an enormous favour. Next week we cross into Portugal. A chi è rivolto Neo One?
