Spend an afternoon with Drew and Zach Lyman, brothers and family members of Lyman-Morse Boatbuilding. Lyman-Morse is a custom boatbuilding company on the coast of Maine, founded in 1978 and over 150 vessels to their name. For the Lyman family, boats and the ocean have always been part of life, not just the family business. A day aboard the LM46 in Newport with two of the Lyman brothers is a pretty good reminder that we don’t just build boats. Moving the engines aft creates more interior space, but it also places the rudders ahead of the propellers. I would test low-speed maneuvering on each engine separately because two engines are not true redundancy if one failure leaves the boat circling. The balance between survival and enjoyment. Between speed and comfort. Between pushing the boat forward and knowing when to simply slow things down. It is a constant dance between the sails, the wind and the ocean. We want Nandji 2 to be fast and efficient, but more importantly, we need to be safe, comfortable and keep things manageable. There are moments out here that feel almost dreamlike. Days where the ocean is calm, the sailing is effortless and you feel incredibly lucky to be exactly where you are. And then there are days like this. The kind where the ocean feels relentless, where sleep comes in broken pieces, and where simply moving around the boat takes more energy than it normally would. There’s simply nowhere to hide out here. You can’t escape the wind. You can’t escape the waves. And you certainly can’t escape the fatigue All you can really do is accept it and remind yourself that this rough patch will pass. Because just like the weather changes, so does the fatigue. During Race Week we caught up with Bruce Taylor who was sailing on David Currie’s Farr 40 Ponyo. Sadly, they lost the top of their mast early in the regatta. He talked about plans for sailing at Magnetic Island Race Week and also about an important milestone that will come up for three of his Chutzaph crew in the 2027 Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht Race.

The ice was piling up as Sardinha 2 reached the last stretch of land. I heard heavy breathing behind me. Then another. Then dozens. A pod of 30 or 40 humpback whales was following us. They came so close I could have touched them. The water was green and milky. If I could see beneath the surface with a microscope, I would see the sea ice nourishing the ocean with minerals and phytoplankton—the foundation of all animal life in the Arctic. The sea ice that posed a danger to me was responsible for the flourishing of all species.
