Leaving the Montebello Islands we push into 25-30 knot head winds before reaching the protection of the Australian mainland and Great Sandy Island. Visiting this lovely beach we find a couple huge Bailer Shells, before heading off to Serrurier Island or also know as Long Island. It was turtle mating season and the poor girls were exhausted on the beach trying to get away from the males just waiting in the shallows ready to pounce. We cross paths with 4 other boats including @TheCruisingKiwis, The Wholesome Sailors and Sailing Singularity on the beach, before celebrating Jo's 50th birthday onboard No Regrets. Exploring the other side of the island we find more turtles mating and a humpback whale skeleton. Auf unserem Vorbereitungstörn an der türkischen Küste bleibt uns Murphy an Bord erhalten. In Marmaris wollen wir nicht nur einige Besorgungen erledigen, vor allem brauchen wir Rat wegen eines augenscheinlich verrotteten Kielbolzens. Im schlimmsten Fall muss die Dilly-Dally aus dem Wasser geholt, der Mast gelegt und der Kiel abmontiert werden. Und nicht nur das: Weil der fragliche Kielbolzen direkt unter dem Motor sitzt, müsste auch der ausgebaut werden. Das würde unseren Zeitplan bis zur Abreise aus der Türkei stark gefährden und obendrein ein riesiges Loch in die Bordkasse reißen.

Als de wind eenmaal gunstig wordt zeilen we naar het zuiden van Tenerife, tanken, pikken Patrick weer op die terug komt uit Nederland en we vertrekken voor de oversteek naar de Kaapverden. Uitgezwaaid door onze Belgische vrienden van Tenerife. We starten lekker, maar het duurt nog lang voordat we uit de invloed van de Canarische eilanden de schone wind richting het zuiden kunnen oppikken. Jarenlang heb ik ervan gedroomd om zeilend te gaan waar de wind me brengt. In 2020 was het dan eindelijk zover en heb ik samen met Felia een prachtige reis gemaakt naar Scandinavië en de Baltische staten. Onze Eva, een Atlantic 43 uit 2007, is een aluminium zeiljacht met hefkiel en gebouwd en uitgerust voor reizen naar plaatsen die net achter de horizon liggen. Vanaf 2021 vaar ik met wisselende bemanning zuidwaarts. Ik vind het leuk om onze avonturen met jullie te delen. We pull our Gulfstar out at Hurricane Boatyard and scrape off tube worms and barnacles. How do you get the barnacle base leftovers off the hull WITHOUT taking all the bottom paint off? We try several options.

Preparations begin early this year for sailing from Turkey to Croatia as we move onto the boat full time. The bitter cold slows things down but we soon have Kejstral ready to head out, initially locally for a shake down, before sailing onwards. Telling our family/friends, and society was not easy and hence the beginning with the fragmented judgements and chatter to try to give you perspective. We are currently in Fiji giving this old gladiator a new lease on life, transforming her from an ex race boat to a performance family cruiser, which we'll need to make both dog and baby proof! This Video is dedicated to my cousin, Mark Robert Crawford who made his final passage a few hours before I passed through the Kanmon straits from the Japan Sea to the Seto Inland sea. It is said that “sailors write their plans in sand at low tide.” I have certainly discovered that to be true. Yesterday, I completed a loop ( about 1500 kms) around Kyushu Island. It was not my initial goal. After making it to Oita from Tokyo last summer I was to sail south down the east coast of Kyushu and then on to Amami Oshima and Okinawa. But an underwater volcano thwarted my plans and so after rounding the southern tip of Kyushu I sailed up the west coast not knowing what surprises were to come. A few days ago, I arrived back at Oita . An unexpected achievement , modest in sailing terms, yet, I must say, gratifying for this novice sailor. I have cycled across Kyushu a few times and it has been a treat to see her from all sides and from the sea. What’s next? Well, I have learned that the wind and the waves decide …. Full article in Multihulls #185 : https://www.multicoques-mag.com/dossiers-catamaran-trimaran/fountaine-pajot-owners-rendez-vous-2022-just-for-fun-in-croatia The tenth edition of the Fountaine Pajot Owners’ Rendezvous was a great success, with 22 catamarans gathering in Trogir from May 21st to 24th. From the Lucia 40 to the Saba 50, there were numerous models represented, including the Astrea 42, the Elba 45 and a nice fleet of Saona 47s. The oldest multihull was undoubtedly the Salina 48 belonging to Yves Pajot – co-founder of the shipyard. Around ten of the catamarans at the event had sailed from their home port – in some cases quite a distance – to attend the event. The remainder were Fountaine Pajot boats based in Croatia and chartered by owners, dealers of the brand or even the shipyard staff (represented by two boats). As for the 108 crew members, they represented a wide range of nationalities – South Africa, Germany, Australia, Spain, the United States, France, Italy, Mexico... The interest of these meetings organized by the shipyard is precisely to share experiences – between owners, of course, but also with the Fountaine Pajot staff. The first day’s sailing took the catamarans to the famous Blue Lagoon anchorage. After a swim (sea temperature of 70°F/21°C, so still a bit cool) and some paddleboarding in the incredible turquoise water, there followed a first race. All the Fountaine Pajots were moored up as if on parade on the dock of Maslinica marina – whose hotel-restaurant Marchini Marchi Heritage had been privately rented for the occasion. The next day, they headed for a well-sheltered cove on the island of Šolta to anchor all the catamarans alongside one another in a circle – not easy to set up, but the dinghies were used to help pass the mooring lines across. In the afternoon, in Croatia, a thermal wind usually picks up during the season, so it was time to hoist the sails and race again to reach Milna, on the island of Brač. The evening festivities continued ashore, some way inland – a bus making two trips was required... For the final day, the boats made an early start on course for Split, with the south-east wind gradually increasing to 20/25 knots. After an enjoyable tour of the historical center, the event concluded at a rooftop venue for “a last Spritz in Split”!
