FIRE & Nowhere to Anchor [Ep.18] Downside of Living on a Sailboat - Sailing Greece - Sailing SV CUBA
Jump on board SV CUBA as we leave Cape Maleas, where we had an amazing freediving experience at the Captain Ismail wreck and flew over the 3 million-year-old petrified forest. If you like to be part of our journey, please consider becoming a Patreon @ https://www.patreon.com/svcuba This week we set off for our sail to Athens, Europe’s oldest capital. What started as a dream sail, just sailing downwind near the east coast of the Peloponnese will soon show the Downside of living on a sailboat. It turns into a situation of national alert leaving us to search for many hours to be able and keep the boat and ourselves safe. As the weather keeps deteriorating with huge fire raging nearby it becomes more unpredictable, thick smoke makes navigation difficult. On a boat, you always have to consider the direction of the wind and its intensity to make sure the anchorage will be safe but with winds constantly changing, high winds and low visibility, we are left in a difficult situation. The entire country is facing a national emergency. After all, however, we manage to find a somewhat safe spot and get to stock up on essential boat supplies. But not without being squeezed for too much cash and left hanging halfway. With new sailing provisions in the hull, we lift anchor and finally get to sail to Athens. Though Shyah panicked as she tried to sail through her first shipping lane getting dangerously close to other ships, we made it, nonetheless. Finally, we arrive at the energetic metropolitan of Athens and everything just seems to move at lightning speed. Sailing the world is very slow and sometimes all you hear are the wind and the sea for many days. We have been sailing in the Mediterranean now for several months and the sailing lifestyle seems to catch up with us, the quiet and slow movements are such a contrast to the fast-moving life of the city. We are just so excited to finally visit this amazing city and see the Acropolis with our own eyes. Come along and sail with us. We are Enrique (Kiki) from Cuba and Sarah (Salsa) from Germany, a sailing couple. We are living on a boat, our tiny house, creating a travel vlog as we sail around the world. We have almost zero sailing experience, but are determined to circumnavigate & share our adventures with you. We are by no means film makers or video editors so please let us know what you think about our videos, what you like to see more of - or less ;-) Sailing life can be a real challenge and a bit scary at times (especially when your home dangles from an iron thread just 10 mm thick). What is to come? We don't know but day by day we are learning how to live more sustainable, living off grid, more connected to nature, so we can share our adventures with you. Come storm or good weather. Please don't forget to subscribe, give us a thumbs up and hit the notification bell to know when our next video is up. We got caught in a really bad wind storm over night on out sailboat. 35 plus knot winds. Dingy kept flipping because of the wind and everything inside fell out into the ocean. Engine and gas tank filled with water. Sleepless night. Austin searches the ocean floor the next morning to attempt to find our stuff. Found his sandals washed up on shore. We hike to a little blue and white church with Lenny.
Our first time out sailing Northern Exposure our Beneteau Oceanis Clipper 373 on the Mediterranean. Then we visited The Acropolis of Athens, an ancient citadel located on a rocky outcrop above the city of Athens and contains the remains of several ancient buildings of great architectural and historical significance, the most famous being the Parthenon. The word acropolis is from the Greek words ἄκρον and πόλις. The term acropolis is generic and there are many other acropoleis in Greece. During ancient times the Acropolis of Athens was known also more properly as Cecropia, after the legendary serpent-man, Cecrops, the supposed first Athenian king. While there is evidence that the hill was inhabited as far back as the fourth millennium BC, it was Pericles in the fifth century BC who coordinated the construction of the buildings whose present remains are the site's most important ones, including the Parthenon, the Propylaea, the Erechtheion and the Temple of Athena Nike. The Parthenon and the other buildings were seriously damaged during the 1687 siege by the Venetians during the Morean War when gunpowder being stored in the Parthenon by the Ottomans was hit by a cannonball and exploded. After we hiked up Mount Lycabettus, also known as Lycabettos, Lykabettos or Lykavittos, is a Cretaceous limestone hill in the Greek capital Athens. At 277 meters above sea level, its summit is the highest point in Central Athens and pine trees cover its base. The name also refers to the residential neighbourhood immediately below the east of the hill. The hill is a tourist destination and can be ascended by the Lycabettus Funicular, a funicular railway which climbs the hill from a lower terminus at Kolonaki. At its two peaks are the 19th century Chapel of St. George, a theatre, and a restaurant.

On our way from Georgetown to Staniel Cay we hoist our gennaker to enjoy the steady 12-15 kts downwind sailing in a beautiful blue waters of Exuma Sound.
The refrigerator in our boat, even though it's essentially brand new, is in a very sad state indeed. When we opened the lid for the first time, we were shocked to see that there was a very disgusting, albeit very cold, colony of mold that was happily thriving within the dank, dark depths. Tambi, tough as she is, is a real wimp when it comes to cleaning up gross things like puke and moldy refrigerators. What that means is that there's only 1 person who can handle this grim job and that's your's truly. I roll up my sleeves, whisper a little prayer, and dive waist deep into the project of cleaning out our disgustingly moldy fridge. ~ Ben, Tambi, & Molly | "SAILBOATSTORY" Don't forget to SUBSCRIBE and join us every FRIDAY for a new episode! * If you read this, creatively use the words GAG & BARF in a comment. I live in Palma de Mallorca, Spain. My sailboat is Vayu, in Sanskrit (remember Im a practicing Yogi) the name stands for wind or life force. Vayu is a 44 ft X-Yacht (X-442) sloop, born 2002 in Denmark. During this first season until the end of 2022, a slow sailing journey from Mallorca Eastward toward Turkey In the first week or two of June we will depart from Palma, to Palermo in Sicily as our first stop. We move Make My Day to the east side in the Bay of Gibraltar to throw out our anchor in La Linea, closer to the Rock. Together with Baby Blue (Caroline & Johan) we visited the Rock with a hired taxi and our own very charismatic guide. There we ventured into the caves, tunnels and to some great lookouts. Of course we saw a lot of monkeys. Finishing with a visit into the Moorish castle and later did some tax-free shopping. There were some big winds coming, so we stayed on board to keep an eye on things. The Mantus anchor held well but the large swell was from the opposite direction as the wind (other than predicted). It made MMD surf and was “a little bit’ annoying. We wanted to go into the harbor but it started blowing 40 knots…. We didn’t dare. We stayed on anchor and our snubber broke a few times, so we didn’t sleep that much. Hermann (our dinghy) went 2 times upside down, with the outboard motor still attached. After the storm had passed, we move into the marina for a week and try to save the outboard. Music by Troy and Paula Haag Want to help us grow? In this episode, we arrive at Sag Harbour and after settling down the anchor we realise that the place we have anchored is far too rocky and we decide to move to another part of the bay for better protection. We wake up the next day with excitement as we head into Sag Harbour to collect our amazing and very talented friend Georgia Louise. Georgia explains to us all why we need to be wearing protective headwear with her expert knowledge on skincare Georgia makes us laugh as she realises we are not driving the boat we are on autopilot. We get wet and wild in the water and realise the current is super strong and we had slight difficulty getting back to the boat. We shower each other down, it was so amazing to have our friend with us after not being able to share the boat with anyone from back home since covid began. Georgia and I nearly get picked up at the front of the boat, until they saw James and pretended they were asking for directions – very funny! James talks through the mooring as we prepare for hurricane Henri’s hit on Long Island and Sag Harbour Philippa is not wanting to stay on the boat whilst the hurricane hits, but at this point we are staying on the yacht! James and Philippa debate about the hurricane and their thoughts and the apps that say very different things and the decisions that they have made. We strip down the boat, taking all the parts away that might be affected badly by the hurricane, strapping, lashing and removing all parts. The bay is starting to empty out and there is only a fraction of the boats that are normally in the bay, very frightening. The harbour master comes to see us and tells us that we shouldn’t be staying on the boat. We pack up our belongings to last a few nights and Philippa searches at last minute for a hotel, which we eventually found, but was an hour and a half away from the boat, we felt lucky to have found somewhere. The feeling of leaving the abandoned stretch of water in the gloom was a feeling we will never forget. TIMESTAMPS 00.00 – Start of video 01.00 – We arrive at Sag Harbour 02.00 – We decide to move to another part of Sag Harbour as the number of boats coming in and out are making for an uncomfortable anchorage 02.51 – We meet Georgia Louise, our amazingly talented and beautiful facialist to the stars, who has million-dollar hands! 04.10 – We try to get Georgia into the tender, with much effort!! Lol 05.10 – Georgia, James and Philippa drink some wine and celebrate her arrival 05.53 – Georgia gives us some essential skin tips 06.20 – Georgia makes us laugh as she realises we are on autopilot!!!! 06.40 – We get wet and wild!!! 07.10 – We shower each other down! 07.40 – Georgia and I nearly get picked up, much to James’ amusement 08.28 – Clips from our time together 09.14 – James talks through hurricane Henri 10.53 – Philippa talks about how nervous and afraid she feels 12.01 – Philippa and James debate about the apps and the hurricane and our decisions 14.07 – It is 4pm and 12 hours until the hurricane is due to hit, and we hear from a meteorologist 15.50 – The harbour master came round and told us it was too unsafe to stay on the boat and we should leave 16.11 – We leave Aequus but have nowhere to go and Philippa calls hotels to find somewhere to stay. 17.07 – Next time aboard Aequus 17.44 – End of video

The upholstery and covers are in amazing shape and the trailer is a triple axle with swing tongue and surge brakes. The condition of the exterior has to be seen to be believed! What's it like to catch your own food, build a beach fire, and cook it under the stars with amazing friends? In today's video we follow Plukky into a system of cracks and caverns in the outer reef. I accidentally corner a Goliath Grouper twice my size and nearly get smashed when it freaks out. We make some great friends with the local Kuna and donate a solar charging system to their village. It's time to leave our beloved San Blas and we prepare to set sail for the Panama Canal! The sailing is awesome, fast and sporty and we do an unofficial race with a catamaran. We have a goodbye dinner in Salt Whistle Bay with our buddy boat since months, Star. The anchorage is so pretty and we hang out on the beach. Then we move to the next one where we visit a nice resort and use their pool. Lovely days all in all! The world record for a global circumnavigation in a sailing vessel is held by IDEC Sport, a 100 foot long, 74 foot wide trimaran, with a time of just under 41 days. On their best day they sailed 894 nautical miles at an average speed of 37.25 knots, and they also managed more than 10 consecutive 800 mile days. By comparison, the fasted monohull is the 100 foot long Comanche, which holds the 24 hour sailing record for monohulls at 618 nautical miles, at an average of 25.75 knots. Both of these boats have similar length, professional crews, and use modern materials and construction techniques, but for some reason the trimaran is significantly faster, even though it is eight years older. But what is it about trimarans that makes them so much faster than monohulls? In this video we’re going to find out. Safe sailing. Boat: White Shadow is a Van De Stadt ‘Seal’ 36 (11 metres). She is hand made in steel, 2004, with a round bilge (hull) and a modified coach roof. This makes her a ‘one off’ and in my opinion the most beautiful Van De Stadt 36 ever built. The camera gear: Main camera is a Panasonic Hc- V700 with a Rode External mic with a sponge and dead kitten attached. Action, underwater scenes and small blogging is done with two Osmo action cams. Some boat shots are done with a Dji gimbal camera. Editing: Final cut pro on a Macbook. Most of the material for each video is filmed over a period of several weeks or so and the editing of each episode is normally done over a day. This process can take longer if original music is used or permissions are needed for copyrighted materials etc. Much time is spent sorting out technical problems. In this case I normally get the help of a younger person who understands computerie stuff! There are also times when filming, editing and uploading is not possible due to being at sea or in locations with no internet access. Content: I have found that filming and releasing material over a period of time is better than doing ‘vlog’ style videos and trying to make episodes out of whats happened in a week, regardless if it’s good content or not. By filming over a period of time I can be more selective in what goes into each video. My aim is to avoid ‘bland and mundane’ and have at least one or two exciting and interesting events in every video. Every video has to be entertaining. Comments and being at sea: I love reading your comments. Most weeks Im able to read everyone. I cant reply to everybody but I do read and enjoy them. Keep them coming! There are times that It might seem I'm not on the internet for certain periods, this is normally when Im at sea on passage. While Im out on the Ocean I have completely no communications with the outside World. When we arrived to Pemba end of Ramadan celebration was about to start. Arriving to the beach right away we were surrounded by the locals. Curious ones and the ones offering their services. But we proceed alone and via luscious forest walk to the nearby village meeting bunch of curious kids. We nicely greeted by the village but shortly told we have to pay if we want to take photos. So we just had back to the beach where the celebration is happening. New morning we inch our way south to position ourselves for easier sail to Tanga, but that was a tuff one! Join us to witness… Thanks so much for watching 🙏 Stay tuned as next Friday 12PM EST we release a new video 🎥 We do our best to keep you entertained and informed and if you find it fun, enjoyable or informative, consider becoming part of our team and ➡️ join us on Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/svaquarius ➡️ want to support us, but not sure about long term commitment? Exploring Brazil 🇧🇷 We’ve been in Cabedelo for nearly 2 months now!! Amazing how the time flies when you are having fun😉 Marina Jacare Village has been a home away from home. We have been exploring the larger area of Cabedelo and Joao Pessoa, visiting the old historical areas, the fresh food market and the beach. If you are heading across to Brazil and looking for a place to stop off, Marina Jacare Village is awesome, we introduce Nicolas Tiphagne, the owner, and he will tell you about what he has on offer in this little spot, where you can come to relax and unwind after a long ocean crossing or even just a short hop up the coast. Nicolas will help you with getting cleared into Brazil, which we were very intimidated by initially but was a relatively easy process. Marina Jacare village has dock berths, swing moorings and a yard where yachts with a draft less than 2m and under 14 tons can be hauled out and stored or worked on. The clubhouse is an open concept that is an amazing cool place to be in the heat of the day. There is a kitchen/restaurant that cooks amazing, well priced meals and cocktails. The swimming pool is a great place to wallow and the beaches are a short 2.5km walk/Uber/taxi drive away. Nic is not adverse to you bringing up your sewing machine and setting up for a few hours to do any boat sewing and repairs that you need to carry out but have no space on board to do. He also will hook you up with the local sailmaker if you have bigger jobs to deal with. There is a very convenient laundry on site and a small book exchange which is awesome to swop out all the books you bought along on your trip, have finished reading and are looking to replace. Our stay here has been great, in fact we have delayed leaving and changed our plans twice already but we will need to up-anchor soon to continue exploring.
In this episode we continue our exploration of Kelowna trails while we pet-sit with two amazing dogs, Hobson and Isla. Places we show you include: - Myra Canyon with the old train trestles and tunnel - Knox Mountain - Okanagan Mountain park - Scenic Valley Trail and Layer Cake mountain We also drop the kayaks into Okanagan Lake and go for a paddle on a nice spring day. Finally, an update. What do we do during all our walks? What do we talk about? Plus, a short teaser of upcoming adventures.... Thanks for following!
