Join Chris and Danielle, Army veterans living the sailboat dream on SV Agua Azul, for a real day in the Dominican Republic. From a super high tide under the full moon to wild grocery runs and essential boat fixes, this vlog captures the ups and downs of island life. We start with our propane rental car (spot the dings!), fuel up, and grab a stunning ocean-view breakfast β Dominican fish for her, American classics for him. Share bites and help a local? Check. Then, navigate chaotic parking like Mad Max to Jumbo for groceries, spotting early Christmas cheer. Back at the marina, load the dinghy (it bulges!), motor through rain, and unpack β sniffing for freshness after a past chicken mishap. Watch boat projects: improvise a hatch hinge with screws and washers, tweak the Seawater Pro water maker seals, and unclog the head without a mess. Plus, clean dingy walls with Dawn for that fresh look. Heat's rising to 90s, so open windows and chill. Furry crew gets peanut butter bacon treats. End with reflections on why we love this life. Recently, we spent an amazing day exploring this spot, and we want to share the experience with you! Getting There and What to Expect To reach Amsterdam, we parked our dinghy nearby and hit the dirt road leading into town. The road is a little rough and dusty β you might get dirt blowing at you β but it only adds to the charm of the adventure. Once you arrive, youβll notice a welcoming atmosphere where locals and visitors mingle. Hanging Out with Friends and Enjoying Local Flavors One of the highlights was meeting up with Alex and Bart, the friendly pizza makers whose delicious pies keep everyone happy. We enjoyed great drinks (I chose water to stay hydrated!) and soaked up the warm, sunny environment. Thereβs a relaxed vibe here that makes it easy to unwind after a long day. Fun Activities to Try: Pickleball and Bocce Ball Amsterdamβs community spirit is alive and well with outdoor games like pickleball and bocce ball (sometimes humorously called "bokea ball"). Watching Corey and his wife play showed just how much fun these simple games can be. Theyβre the reigning champions of bocce ball around here β even if Coreyβs a bit mischievous with his moves! Tips for Your Visit Bring comfortable shoes and be ready for some dust on the road. Try the local pizza β Alex and Bart do an excellent job. Join in on outdoor games or simply watch and enjoy the friendly competition. Stay hydrated; the summer warmth can sneak up on you. If you like water activities, consider a quick dip to cool off like we did. Amsterdam in Luperon is perfect for travelers seeking a mix of relaxation, fun, and new friendships. Whether youβre island-hopping or just exploring the area, donβt miss out on stopping here for some good times.

Join us as we explore Luperon town to find the freshest steaks straight from the local meat market. From docking to selecting the perfect cuts, watch how we navigate language barriers and meet friendly locals along the way. Finding the Freshest Steaks in Luperon - A Local Adventure If youβre a seafood lover or a steak enthusiast cruising around the Caribbean, one of the highlights of boat life is discovering fresh, local food markets. Our recent trip to Luperon, a charming town with easy access from the marina, turned into quite the adventure searching for the freshest steaks. Hereβs a friendly inside look at how we found some of the best steaks in the area, straight from a local meat market. Fresh Steaks from Local Cattle When docking in Luperon, we decided to explore the town and hunt for quality meat to cook on board. The local meat market was close to the dinghy docks, easy to find and filled with lively chatter. We learned the meat was almost organic, coming directly from cattle raised nearby. That means youβre getting a product thatβs as fresh as it getsβno long supply chains or frozen imports. Navigating Language Barriers and Building Friendships One of the most memorable parts of the trip was connecting with locals despite the language barrier. Our mix of broken Spanish and English turned a simple errand into an experience full of laughter and goodwill. It's easy to meet new friends when youβre open and exploring the culture. And as it turns out, the local community looks out for stray dogs tooβa pup followed us almost all the way back to the boat, hoping for a taste of our steaks! Selecting the Perfect Cut At the meat market, the steak selections were fresh and inviting. After some careful pointing and gesturing, we managed to choose about four pounds of steaks. Though the cuts werenβt very large, they looked perfect for grilling back on the boat. The total process took a little longer than expected, turning a quick 30-minute trip into a couple of hours, but thatβs the beauty of boat lifeβtime slows down and you savor moments like these. Cooking and Enjoying Your Fresh Catch Back on board, the steaks went straight into the freezer to keep fresh until cooking time. Defrosting and grilling fresh meat like this enhances the boat life experience. Whether youβre anchored offshore or docked in a serene harbor, cooking local ingredients connects you to your surroundings in a meaningful way. Why This Matters for Sailors and Food Lovers If youβre sailing near Luperon or similar small towns, taking the time to visit local markets can significantly enrich your journey. Fresh, locally sourced foods not only taste better but support small communities. Plus, the stories and friendships you build along the way make your adventure truly unforgettable.

Watch as we change the oil in our diesel engine, generator, and water maker, explore island life at local spots like the Snappy Turtle, and battle rough seas on our journey. Leaving Georgetown, Bahamas, with about 400 miles ahead to the Dominican Republic, the first step is making sure the boatβs diesel engine and generator are ready. After about 100 hours, itβs time to change the engine oil to maintain performance. The process starts by warming the engine, then pumping out the old oil using a specialized pump. Proper disposal is important, so the old oil is transferred to a jug for recycling once in port. The water makerβs oil is also changed, using full synthetic oil per manufacturerβs recommendation. Though the water maker holds only a small amount, regular oil changes are essential for keeping it running smoothly. Having the engine located conveniently near the kitchen area has its perks β like easy access to refreshments while working. Once maintenance is done, the day includes a run to town to drop off trash and grab supplies. Exploring Georgetownβs local spots, like the dog-friendly Snappy Turtle bar, adds a lively break. The local drinks, especially fruity cocktails, and island atmosphere make it a memorable experience. Planning ahead for eight months in the Dominican Republic includes renting a car to explore mountains, beaches, and cities like Santiago. This kind of travel offers a new chapter beyond just sailing. At sea, however, things get challenging. The seas proved much rougher than expected, with the boat leaning up to 25 degrees at times. Even with sails and engine working, the rough water caused seasickness. The video shows candid moments of dealing with motion sickness, and the importance of staying calm and watching the horizon helps. Anchoring on the north side of Long Island brought more challenges. The anchorage was very rolly due to swelling water and wind. Things inside the boat were tossed about, creating mess and discomfort. This trip highlights the reality of long passages β thorough preparation, enjoying island life briefly, and facing the unpredictable conditions of the open sea. For anyone planning similar adventures, keeping up with maintenance, planning for downtime, and expecting tough seas will help make the journey safer and more enjoyable.
