Sailing our Lagoon 400 catamaran down Fuerteventura in a three-metre Atlantic swell to Morro Jable — the last anchorage before a month in the marina and the jump to Cape Verde. Three weeks of doing absolutely nothing in Fuerteventura (friends, a resort, zero content), and then the real thing: running south with the jib out at six and a half knots, in a swell that looks like nothing on camera and is three metres in real life. That's the thing about the Canary Islands — the wind always blows north to south, so once you go down, you don't come back up. A rolly night anchored in three metres of water, flying fish off Costa Calma that refused to be filmed, Vlad supervising, and the last night at anchor before the marina. Then a week of work in Milan, and I came back to the boat alone — the blonde is staying with her family before Cape Verde — to find it full of Sahara sand from the calima. I also brought back something important: the clock from my grandfather's Amel, the Zena, the only thing that survived when she was lost in Bonaire. And we're now officially members of the Ocean Cruising Club. Simon bought a dinghy. He thought he could just carry it. 40 kilos, 33 degrees. Haha, no. 😅 So we borrowed a sack truck and wheeled it down, while Budhi found the tiniest patch of shade and waited. I returned the truck, took out the trash, and when I came back it was already inflated. No motor, but we have a dinghy again. And I’m so happy I can hardly believe it. ⛵ It’s not always the small things that make us happy. In all our travels, we have always loved exploring new places and visiting islands that are hardly touched by tourism. We've been incredibly lucky to have experienced some wonderful places around the world but this island is a bit different. Have we actually found our new home? Sometimes the best places are the ones you find when things don't quite go to plan! After a lovely walk exploring the beautiful Pembrokeshire coastline, we needed to find somewhere to spend the night in our campervan. Simple enough, you'd think! Unfortunately, finding an available campsite proved rather more difficult than expected. We'd tried several places, everywhere seemed to be booked, and with virtually no mobile phone signal, even checking availability was becoming a challenge. Eventually, we found Rhosson Ganol Caravan and Camping Site, near St Davids in Pembrokeshire, and managed to secure a pitch. And what a place we'd stumbled across! With spectacular views towards Ramsey Island and the surrounding coastline, it turned out to be a wonderful spot to spend the evening. Once we'd settled in, I headed out along the Pembrokeshire Coast Path to explore the nearby cliffs and lifeboat station, before getting the drone up to capture the coastline in the beautiful evening light. What started as a frustrating search for somewhere to sleep ended with some of the most memorable scenery of our Wales adventure. How is a liferaft built – and why is every detail there? Before a new liferaft design is allowed on board a ship, it has to survive an 18-metre drop into the sea and still inflate and work. In this video we take an inflatable liferaft apart, piece by piece: the container, the buoyancy tubes, the self-erecting canopy, the lights, the ballast pockets, the entrances and the floor. Every one of these details is a requirement of SOLAS and the IMO Life-Saving Appliances (LSA) Code – and many of those rules exist because of one night in 1912. At the end: the approval tests every life raft has to pass, and why your liferaft must be serviced every year. One week before we leave…weather permitting. We are just one week away from our Georgia to Texas cruise. Planning and checking systems continue and we have added a dedicated monitor for our bow camera. Steve mounted it on a stainless-steel pole for better viewing and to be out of the way of the chart plotters. Really keeping our fingers crossed that the weather will be good for us to leave. Karen washed the lines and the stern with a Ryobi Power Washer. The cockpit also got some power washer time. It only delivers 700 psi but that is plenty, and it won’t harm the deck or the paint in the cockpit. It uses our 18V battery system. We’ve had some leakage with the water tank fill in the past. Using a new vacuum to blow air into the tank and soapy water around the fill we were able to determine the location of the leak. The current water sender/tender, a device that measures the water level in the tank, was 18” long. Steve swapped it out for a 19” sender which will give us a more accurate reading when nearing empty. He also resealed the tank fill so that the leak issue has been repaired. Huge hugs and kisses to our subscribers and viewers. We can’t thank you enough for your support, encouragement and comments. Isabella is a 1990/2010 sailing ketch with four private cabins, an engine room, a salon, a galley, and three heads with two separate shower stalls. Her fiberglass hull is designed for bluewater cruising, with an excellent capsize ratio of 1.68 and a very good comfort ratio of 42.19. She is equipped with Garmin and Raymarine electronics and hydraulic steering. Isabella was designed by naval architect Michel Bigoin, who also designed Phocea. Built in 1976, the 246-foot, four-masted steel schooner was considered the world’s largest private sailing yacht until 2004. With the extreme 25-foot tides in the Bay of Fundy, Harry designed this ingenious Wheelbarrow Boat so he could roll his dinghy hundreds of yards across rocky terrain to the water’s edge. This design benefits from nearly two decades of revisions from Harry’s active use of his boat. We hired marine designer Judy Huxtable to work with Harry to revise his plans into a CNC-cut kit that is easy and fast to build, even for a first time boat builder with no experience. The first three novice builders all said it took only 25 hours to build their boats. Every wood part comes in the kit. Every edge of every piece is pre-beveled to the correct angle and so builders can simply join and epoxy the parts. Pre-drilled pilot holes, and scribes enable builders to line up each piece with certainty, eliminating confusion and uncertainty. Max Deckers is the navigator aboard Remon Vos’ famous Black Jack 100. We asked him about what he thought would be the major challenges in this year’s race from a navigator’s perspective and also how he has to adjust his workings to the recent IRC modifications they have made to the sail inventory. Many Australians will remember that Max was the navigator aboard Anthony and David Johnston’s R/P 72 URM in last year’s Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht Race.
