Siamo entrati con Rebecca Geiger nei cantieri Ferrari Hypersail, in Toscana, per vedere da vicino una barca che ambisce a ridefinire i limiti della vela oceanica. Un monoscafo foiling di circa 100 piedi, progettato per volare sull'acqua, produrre autonomamente l'energia necessaria ai sistemi di bordo e affrontare una delle sfide più ambiziose della navigazione: il Trofeo Jules Verne, il giro del mondo a vela in equipaggio, senza scalo e senza assistenza. Accompagnati da Marco Ribigini, capo ingegnere del progetto, abbiamo osservato da vicino le soluzioni che prendono forma su Hypersail: dai foil e dai sistemi di controllo del volo alla gestione energetica, dai materiali alle tecnologie che mettono in relazione il mondo Ferrari con quello della vela. Ma la vera sfida va oltre la velocità. Hypersail esplora una strada ancora da dimostrare: portare il foiling nella navigazione oceanica su un monoscafo, in un ambiente dove vento, onde e condizioni meteo cambiano continuamente e dove prestazioni e affidabilità devono convivere. L'obiettivo è ambizioso: confrontarsi con il record del Trofeo Jules Verne, stabilito da Thomas Coville e dal suo equipaggio a bordo del maxi-trimarano Sodebo Ultim 3. 📍At sea 1887: A Journey in Time Harmony of the Seas I didn't make reservations prior to sailing. This was my "show up & see what happens" experiment. Which went really well BTW. Stay tuned. On the day of the show there were reservations available, so I snagged one. If you don't get reservations then do the stand by line. Personally, I found this show a tad difficult to follow. The performances were great - the storyline just lost me. Children are allowed at the performance and it seemed to lose them too bc one little boy kept asking (loudly) "what's happening? Surfing remote atolls looks like paradise from the outside—but the reality of hunting waves in the Tuamotus is wild, unpredictable, and rarely easy. After navigating a narrow, churning pass into a remote atoll in French Polynesia, we found ourselves sitting out howling 40-knot winds and heavy 3.5m swells. With no safe anchorage anywhere near the break, scoring empty waves meant brutal 5-nautical-mile dinghy runs across open chop, braving reef cuts, burning through our final drops of fuel, and watching the swell peak and vanish.
