In this episode of our Arctic sailing adventure, we continue through the spectacular islands of Vesterålen in Northern Norway aboard our sailing vessel Polaris. With light winds on the nose, we motor from Stø towards Skipnes, passing quiet harbours, rugged mountains and late-season coastal landscapes. In Skipnes, the main season is already over. The harbour is calm, the hotel seems closed, but we still find a cold beer and a perfect end to a sunny day. The next morning, we leave Polaris behind and walk towards Tinden, an old fishing village and trading post. What looks like a short and easy hike turns into a wet, swampy trail, even after a long dry spell. Tinden itself feels almost deserted out of season, but the smell of fresh paint shows that someone is still caring for this historic place. From there we continue to Skårvågen. The following morning brings thick fog over the harbour and coast, making navigation through the rock-strewn waters unappealing. Instead, we hike up Skårvågfjellet, 403 metres above sea level, rising above the fog into blue sky. As the weather changes and time runs short, we adjust our plans, leave the idea of Trollfjord behind, and set a shorter course towards Sortland. With tidal streams, shallow waters, fishing gear and the distant mountains of Lofoten on the horizon, this passage marks the last days before the sailing season comes to an end. #ArcticSailingAdventure #SailingNorway #ArcticSailing #SailingVlog #NorwayByBoat ⏳ Timestamps: 00:00 Departing in Stø 02:53 Tinden 04:20 Skipnes – Hike to Tinden 06:13 Departing to Skårvågen 09:57 Hike to Skåvågfjellet 10:55 Departure to Sortland 17:37 Preview of the Next Episode 🎵 Music from Epidemic Sound: Whispers Of The Deep by Johan Landqvist Tea With Turtles by Rachel Sandy Those Who Wander by Laura Platt Ensam by Sandra Marteleur 🗺️ Planning Resources: Harbours, Anchorages and Routes: Norwegian Cruising Guide: Volume 3 – Bodø to the Russian Border https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0GRK77GYD https://books.apple.com/ch/book/norwegian-cruising-guide/id6760362421?l=en-GB https://play.google.com/store/books/details?id=Pk3GEQAAQBAJ 🔗 Link: https://www.norwegiancruisingguide.com 💨 Weather Forecast and Routing: https://www.predictwind.com https://www.savvy-navvy.com 📺 Watch More… https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLRvcLZL9-pokLoV22O1OP3p5eR32J-SDD 🚢 Subscribe & Hit the Bell 🔔 https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCAym9YS0z1-qYm-s47pNEfw?sub_confirmation=1 📍 Follow Our Journey: https://www.instagram.com/sailingpolaris https://www.facebook.com/sailingpolaris https://www.sailingpolaris.uk 🛥️ Ever dreamed of sailing the world? Sail along Senja’s exposed coastline, where the vast North Atlantic meets dramatic, untouched Norwegian wilderness. This episode captures two full offshore sailing day shaped by calm seas, shifting weather and the raw reality of navigating one of Europe’s most remote regions. From steep mountain peaks plunging into the ocean to open, exposed waters with nothing but sea between Norway and Greenland, the journey highlights the beauty and isolation of Arctic sailing. Careful route planning, shallow harbour approaches and changing wind conditions define the passage, offering an authentic look at life aboard a sailing yacht in the far north. Venturing beyond the 12-nautical-mile territorial line, we head into deep offshore waters where the continental shelf drops dramatically — a known hotspot for marine life. Despite limited sightings, the experience captures the unpredictability of wildlife encounters in the Arctic. As conditions evolve from glassy seas to incoming wind and a forecast gale, the day ends with preparations for rough weather in a remote harbour. This documentary showcases real offshore sailing, Arctic exploration and the challenges of navigating Senja’s wild and exposed coast. ⏳ Timestamps: 00:00 Leaving Hamn i Senja 05:09 Andenes 08:17 Planning the Route to Stø 12:46 Departure for 12 nm Territorial Water, Whale Watching and Stø 20:36 Stø, Dronning Ruta and Muhrooms 🎵 Music from Epidemic Sound: Head My Way by Evelynn Ray In The Arms Of Great Despires by Christian Andersen Winds Of Aetheria by Dian Shuai Where Are You? by Franz Gordon Meet Me In The Hills by Howard Harper-Barnes Andøya E Mi Øy by Geir Laupstad Æ Å Ho I Stormtrusa by Geir Laupstad #ArcticSailing #SailingAdventure #NorwayTravel #OceanExploration #WhaleWhatching 🗺️ Planning Resources: Harbours, Anchorages and Routes: Norwegian Cruising Guide: Volume 3 – Bodø to the Russian Border https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0GRK77GYD https://books.apple.com/ch/book/norwegian-cruising-guide/id6760362421?l=en-GB https://play.google.com/store/books/details?id=Pk3GEQAAQBAJ 🔗 Link: https://www.norwegiancruisingguide.com 💨 Weather Forecast and Routing: https://www.predictwind.com 📺 Watch More… https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLRvcLZL9-pokLoV22O1OP3p5eR32J-SDD 🚢 Subscribe & Hit the Bell 🔔 https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCAym9YS0z1-qYm-s47pNEfw?sub_confirmation=1 📍 Follow Our Journey: https://www.instagram.com/sailingpolaris https://www.facebook.com/sailingpolaris https://www.sailingpolaris.uk 🛥️ Ever dreamed of sailing the world? After weeks exploring the remote wilderness of Svalbard, it is finally time to begin the long journey south. In this episode of Expedition Svalbard, we sail more than 550 nautical miles across the Barents Sea on our return passage from the High Arctic back to Tromsø in northern Norway. The voyage home is a careful balance of sailing and motoring as we work with changing Arctic weather conditions. Long watches, fuel calculations and shifting wind forecasts shape each decision on board as we guide our sailing yacht steadily south towards mainland Norway. At times the sea is glassy calm and we motor gently through the Arctic waters. At other moments the wind builds and we reef the sails as the boat surges forward at speed. Dolphins, whales and vast open horizons accompany us along the way as we leave the islands of Svalbard behind. While the miles pass beneath the keel, we reflect on the extraordinary places we experienced during the expedition — drifting icebergs, remote polar landscapes and rare wildlife such as walrus and polar bears. We also visited the unique communities that exist in this harsh environment, including Longyearbyen, Barentsburg and the historic research station of Ny-Ålesund. The return voyage is both demanding and reflective. After 33 days away, sailing back into the familiar waters of Tromsø marks the end of an unforgettable Arctic expedition. In this episode of our Arctic sailing documentary, we explore the dramatic fjords and remote anchorages of Svalbard. From Ny Ålesund we navigate into Kongsfjorden towards the imposing front of Kronebreen, carefully assessing drifting ice and the possibility of uncharted shallows as we approach the glacier. At Peirsonhamna anchorage, we maintain an ice watch as icebergs drift through the bay, testing our anchoring strategy and Arctic seamanship. We even attempt to move a drifting bergy bit with the dinghy to better understand the scale and force of these frozen masses. Ashore, we visit the historic marble mining remains of Ny London, founded by Ernest Mansfield’s Northern Exploration Company in 1911. Rusting machinery, abandoned railway tracks and weathered cabins stand as stark reminders of early industrial ambition in the High Arctic. In Ny Ålesund, one of the world’s northernmost settlements, our friend Linda guides us through its history — from coal mining town to international Arctic research hub. We see the historic telegraph station and the mooring mast used for Roald Amundsen’s 1926 North Pole airship expedition. Continuing south, we sail into Tempelfjorden and anchor at Bionahamna beneath the striking sedimentary formations of Temple Mountain. We approach Tunabreen glacier in calm conditions, capturing Polaris against the vast Arctic ice landscape. This is High Arctic sailing in its rawest form: glaciers, drifting ice, polar history and remote wilderness at the edge of the world. #Svalbard #ArcticSailing #NyAlesund #PolarHistory #HighArcticAdventure ⏳ Timestamps: 00:00 Intro 00:50 Sailing Into the Ice – Kronebreen, Peirsonhamna 03:38 Anchoring in Peirsonhamna, Ice Watch 07:18 Exploring Ny London, Crashing Dinghy Into Ice 11:33 Ny Ålesund 15:49 Saling Back to Longyearbyen, Visit to Tempelfjorden, Bionahamna 21:25 Preview To Next Episode 🎵 Music from Epidemic Sound: My Last Transmission by Gavin Luke You Will Return by Kikoru Glitch In Reality by David Celeste Secret Spring by Helmut Schenker Woodland Spirits by Bonnie Grace Wendy's Waltz by Anna Landstrom A Summer Breeze by Ten Towers Permittivity by Martin Gauffin 🔗 Links: https://www.norwegiancruisingguide.com https://www.barentswatch.no/en https://www.yr.no/en 📺 Watch More… https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLRvcLZL9-pokLoV22O1OP3p5eR32J-SDD 🚢 Subscribe & Hit the Bell 🔔 https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCAym9YS0z1-qYm-s47pNEfw?sub_confirmation=1 📍 Follow Our Journey: https://www.instagram.com/sailingpolaris https://www.facebook.com/sailingpolaris https://www.sailingpolaris.uk 🛥️ Ever dreamed of sailing the world? Sailing in Svalbard brought us face to face with a walrus and a polar bear in the High Arctic. In this Expedition Svalbard episode, we explore Barentsburg, Arctic wildlife and remote glacier sailing at 78° North. In this episode of Expedition Svalbard, we sail deeper into the High Arctic and experience one of our most unforgettable wildlife encounters yet. A massive walrus surfaces beside our boat, its tusks cutting through the cold Arctic water just metres from the hull. Later, we spot a polar bear ashore — a rare and powerful moment in one of the most remote environments on Earth. Our voyage also takes us to Barentsburg, the Soviet-era Russian settlement on Norwegian soil. Coal smoke, Lenin statues and Arctic isolation create an atmosphere unlike anywhere else in Svalbard. From exposed harbour pontoons and dense Arctic fog to glacier fronts and drifting ice, this is real high-latitude sailing. Wildlife, geopolitics and raw Arctic nature — this is life under sail at 78° North. ⛵ Yacht: Bavaria Cruiser 46 📍 Locations: Longyearbyen, Barentsburg, Poolepynten, Ny-Ålesund 🌊 Conditions: 6°C, fog, Arctic currents, glacier ice #PolarBear #Walrus #Barentsburg #ExpeditionSvalbard #ArcticWildlife ⏳ Timestamps: 00:00 Intro 00:46 Walrus at Borebreen Glacier 04:18 Barentsburg - Soviet Style 13:11 Barentsburg Harbour Explained for Sailors 14:18 Good Bye Barentsburg – Poolepynten Ahoy! 16:39 A Polar Bear! 17:31 Walrus at Poolepynten 21:34 A Foggy Sail to Ny-Ålesund 🎵 Music from Epidemic Sound: A Great Journey by Dayon The Verdict by Trevor Kowalski Sphinx by David Celeste Ethos by Johannes Bornlof Shrines by David Celeste Niveus by Christoffer Moe Ditlevsen 🔗 Links: https://www.norwegiancruisingguide.com https://www.barentswatch.no/en https://www.yr.no/en 📺 Watch More… https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLRvcLZL9-pokLoV22O1OP3p5eR32J-SDD 🚢 Subscribe & Hit the Bell 🔔 https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCAym9YS0z1-qYm-s47pNEfw?sub_confirmation=1 📍 Follow Our Journey: https://www.instagram.com/sailingpolaris https://www.facebook.com/sailingpolaris https://www.sailingpolaris.uk 🛥️ Ever dreamed of sailing the world? We arrive in Longyearbyen by sail and immediately step into polar bear country. Armed hikes, abandoned coal mines and daily life at the edge of the Arctic — this is the unfiltered reality of Svalbard. After sailing 125 nautical miles through the High Arctic from Hornsund to Longyearbyen, navigating light winds, ocean swell and the constant challenge of ice detection. What begins as a calm overnight passage becomes a lesson in patience, seamanship and decision-making as the wind fades and the engine takes over for the final miles. Arriving in Longyearbyen, Svalbard reveals itself as a place of stark beauty and hidden complexity. Beyond the harbour and fjords lies a layered story of whalers, trappers and coal miners, shaped today by accelerating climate change and growing geopolitical importance. From abandoned mines and roaming reindeer to strict polar-bear safety rules, daily life here feels both fragile and resilient. This episode blends offshore sailing, Arctic navigation, and an honest look at how climate, history and politics intersect at the northern edge of Europe. We sail deep into the Arctic and make our first anchorage in the ice. Growlers drift past the hull, polar bears leave their traces ashore, and every decision suddenly matters. This episode of Expedition Svalbard follows our offshore passage from mainland Norway to Spitsbergen, a 165-nautical-mile sail into high-latitude waters. Departing on Bjørnøya in freezing temperatures, we deal with shifting winds, currents, long watches and the constant challenge of managing the boat in near-zero conditions. As the mountains of southern Spitsbergen emerge from the clouds, the realities of Arctic sailing set in. We navigate through drifting growlers, monitor ice charts, and prepare for polar bear safety — a legal and practical necessity when going ashore in Svalbard. Before landfall, we practise deterrence procedures and review what it truly means to operate in polar bear country. Anchoring in Hornsund near the Polish research station, we experience the uneasy calm of ice at anchor: the constant clicking of melting growlers, shifting conditions, and the need for vigilance at all times. Ashore, we carefully scout the coastline, finding traces of wildlife and exploring the remains of historic trapping huts and early whaling activity — quiet evidence of how humans once survived in this harsh environment. This episode captures the moment when Arctic sailing stops being theoretical and becomes lived experience: cold, remote, beautiful, and unforgiving. From offshore seamanship and ice navigation to first landfall on Spitsbergen, this is expedition sailing at the edge of the navigable world. ⛵ Expedition Svalbard is a real-world sailing documentary about high-latitude sailing, ice navigation, polar bear awareness and respectful exploration of the Arctic. Polaris and her crew reach one of the most remote outposts in the Arctic: Bjørnøya (Bear Island). In this episode, we anchor beneath towering cliffs, obtain landing permission, and cross the island to visit its legendary meteorological station, staffed by only nine people. Along the way, we walk through a stark landscape shaped by wind, permafrost and history. We discover old refuge cabins, scattered timber, human graves from the whaling era, and even the remains of a WWII German aircraft still lying across the tundra. The crew of the station welcome us with extraordinary hospitality — from a full facilities tour to the unexpected offer of a sauna and an Arctic skinny-dip, a rite of passage for those daring enough to join the island’s official “nude bathing club”. We also explore the realities of polar-bear safety, extreme weather, drifting ice, and the powerful currents around this isolated island that sits between mainland Norway and Spitsbergen. Finally, as we prepare to sail north towards Spitsbergen, fog rolls in, the swell builds, and we reflect on an unforgettable encounter with the extraodinary people who keep this outpost running — and the deep history of those who once called this harsh island a temporary home. Join us for an extraordinary mix of adventure, history, Arctic wildlife, raw sailing moments and rare access to a remote scientific station. Sailing through the far north of Norway, in this episode we take you from Hammerfest to Tromsø. We leave the world’s northernmost town, explore history of Finnmark’s WWII destruction, and crosse the notorious Lopphavet – one of Norway’s most dangerous sea areas. We document the 85-nautical-mile passage across Arctic waters, reflecting on the reconstruction of the region and the endurance of those who live here. With rugged coastlines, stunning landscapes, calm seas, and moments of solitude, this episode captures the essence of Arctic sailing: unpredictable, harsh, and deeply beautiful. ⏳ Timestamps: 00:00 Departure from Hammerfest & the WWII history of the Finnmark 08:09 Arrival in Hasvik, accompanied by dolphins 10:24 Hasvik to Tromsø 🎵 Music from Epidemic Sound: My Little Friend by Franz Gordon A Familiar Smile by Gavin Luke Fading Bloom by Lalo Brickman Suddenly the Leaves Fall by Ruiqui Zhao 🔗 Links: https://www.norwegiancruisingguide.com https://www.barentswatch.no/en https://www.yr.no/en 📺 Watch More… https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLRvcLZL9-pokLoV22O1OP3p5eR32J-SDD 🚢 Subscribe & Hit the Bell 🔔 https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCAym9YS0z1-qYm-s47pNEfw?sub_confirmation=1 📍 Follow Our Journey: https://www.instagram.com/sailingpolaris https://www.facebook.com/sailingpolaris https://www.sailingpolaris.uk 🛥️ Ever dreamed of sailing the world? Welcome aboard Polaris as we launch into a brand-new Arctic sailing season! 🧭 In this episode, we kick off with a quick check dive in icy one-degree water to inspect the hull and replace anodes after more than a year in the water. From there, we set off from Skjervøy toward Hammerfest, navigating calm fjords, narrow tidal sounds, and a sea full of king crab pots. Along the way, we round the iconic North Cape (Nordkapp) in perfect weather — a highlight of any Arctic voyage — and stop in Honningsvåg, the town closest to the Cape. There, we climb the famous Nordtrappa, a thousand-step granite staircase built by Nepalese Sherpas, offering panoramic views over the Arctic Ocean. We encounter strong currents, light winds, and long motoring stretches through Finnmark’s stunning coastal wilderness. With the Midnight Sun above us and snowy peaks all around, it’s the perfect start to another season in the High North. ➡️ Subscribe and join us for more remote sailing, local encounters, and off-grid Arctic adventures. . ⏳ Timestamps: 00:00 Intro 00:39 Skjervøy to Bergsfjorden 05:30 Bergsfjorden to Hammerfest 10:14 Hammerfest to Nordkapp 12:20 Nordkapp to Honningsvåg 14:12 Honningsvåg to Hammerfest 🎵 Music from Epidemic Sound: Ocean Air by Aerian Pagan Ritual by Roy Edwin Williams Ivory Tower by Philip Ayers The Norman Kings by Bonnie Grace Slowly Walking Towards A Dream by Staffan Carl The Unconquered Sun by Dian Shuai Close by Jakob Ahlbom My Fair Country by Martin Carlberg Calm Inner Thoughts by Victor Lundberg 🔗 Links: https://www.norwegiancruisingguide.com https://www.barentswatch.no/en https://www.yr.no/en 📺 Watch More… https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLRvcLZL9-pokLoV22O1OP3p5eR32J-SDD 🚢 Subscribe & Hit the Bell 🔔 https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCAym9YS0z1-qYm-s47pNEfw?sub_confirmation=1 📍 Follow Our Journey: https://www.instagram.com/sailingpolaris https://www.facebook.com/sailingpolaris https://www.sailingpolaris.uk 🛥️ Ever dreamed of sailing the world?
