It's no secret we love hiking the Trinidad jungle but in one of our recent adventures we came across a creature that we hadn't seen in person yet - the world's biggest centipede! According to all the guys Trent sent pictures too, it's awesome, so in this short clip we decided to share it with the rest of you! As I've now discovered, the biggest centipede in the world is the Amazonian Giant Centipede (Scolopendra gigantea), which can grow over 30 centimeters (12 inches). It's found in South America and the Caribbean, including right here in Trinidad & Tobago. Thankfully this one was not alive - if we come across one in the jungle that's alive you'll be able to hear my scream across the world!! 👉 SUPPORT THE STORY TELLING ⛵ Gain access to our member only area: https://www.travelsketchsailing.com/join-in 😎 Tip jar: https://buy.stripe.com/6oE8A1d9Yabj4OA9AB After backpacking Asia, road tripping Europe and doing a bit of van life, we’re now exploring the world aboard our Leopard 45 catamaran. Sailing the Dominican Republic during the holidays is all about community, but the fuel issues in Luperon can quickly turn a "Secret Christmas" into a high-stakes mechanical nightmare. Between the holiday potlucks and the local traditions, we jumped in to help a friend pull a massive 30-gallon fuel tank that was threatening their ability to stay mobile as the bay starts to get rough. The expensive lesson was discovered at [00:17:45] when we realized the fuel hose wasn't reaching the supply, forcing a total extraction of Scott's tank. Without a crane or shop, we had to MacGyver a solution by stripping the bimini and using our main halyard to hoist the 30-gallon beast out of the bilge. It’s the ultimate liveaboard reality: one minute you're eating 8-day cured smoked ham, and the next you’re rigging your sail lines in the cockpit to save a friend's engine. The situation shifted from a holiday celebration to a critical threat at [00:18:33]. As the bay starts rocking, our friends are all reporting the same contaminated fuel failures. With the "teeter test" coming up next week, we are officially worried for the whole fleet—if these siphons don't clear the lines, nobody is making the weather window for Puerto Rico.
The classic catamaran vs monohull debate? Everyone talks about stability, self-righting, or comfort—but there’s a crucial piece most beginners miss. It’s not the boat itself that keeps you safe… it’s how you interact with it. In this video, I break down the real difference in how each boat teaches you, prepares you, and challenges your judgment. If you’re thinking about living aboard or just curious which boat truly feels safer, this one will make you rethink everything. ⏱️ Timestamps: 00:00 – Why the debate is incomplete 01:00 – How monohulls teach you through feedback 02:00 – How catamarans teach you through responsibility 03:00 – The truth about safety for beginners 🔔 Subscribe for more insights on living aboard: [channel link] Hashtags: #SailingLife #CatamaranVsMonohull #LivingAboard #SailingTips #BoatSafety #BeginnerSailors #OceanLife The ongoing debate between catamarans and monohulls is often incomplete, leading many beginners to make dangerous mistakes despite choosing what they perceive as the safer vessel. This video expands on previous discussions about the safety of liveaboard boats, emphasizing that true "boating safety" is a dynamic relationship, not just a static feature. For those new to the water, understanding these nuances is crucial for effective "boat education" and making informed decisions. We offer essential "boating tips" to help beginners navigate the complexities of "sailing" and ensure a more secure experience, especially when considering a "catamaran" versus a "monohull" for their adventures.

What a day at sea! In this episode of Sailing Mirage, Ella and I sail from Grand Turk to Providenciales in the beautiful Turks and Caicos Islands — and it truly turned into one of those unforgettable passages. We departed at 6:30 AM with a steady 16–18 knots of wind on the beam, sailing comfortably under full main and Code 0. The ocean was absolutely perfect — smooth, powerful, alive. Moments like this remind me why I love sailing so deeply… I might have gotten a bit sentimental there 😊 Ella was in her element, sunbathing on the aft deck, enjoying every minute of the passage. Then came the highlight: we caught a BIG mahi-mahi! It took almost an hour to reel her in — and this was Ella’s very first fish! The excitement on board was real and unforgettable. As if that wasn’t enough adventure, our arrival in Providenciales added a little spice. With strong wind, about 3 knots of current, and charts that were a bit off, we briefly ran aground near Donna Cay. Nothing serious — a passing motorboat wake lifted us free, and we anchored safely nearby. Just another reminder to stay humble at sea 😉 We end the day the best way possible: fried fresh mahi-mahi, dinner in the cockpit, and a bottle of Mumm’s Champagne 🥂 Sunset, good food, great company — what more could you ask for? What. A. Day. In this episode of Sailing and Cruising the East Coast, host Bela Musits sits down with Roy Greenwald, an experienced offshore sailor who has completed multiple ocean crossings and long-distance races. Roy shares insights from his years at sea aboard his Valiant 42, a boat known more for blue-water cruising than high-performance racing—yet one that’s carried him to impressive victories. Roy talks about competing in legendary events like the Newport to Bermuda Race and the Marion to Bermuda Race, where he and his wife even took first place. Bela and Roy explore what it takes to prepare both mentally and technically for ocean passages, how double-handed sailing challenges crews in unique ways, and why safety, seamanship, and teamwork matter most offshore. Beyond racing, Roy discusses his work organizing the Northeast Ocean Race Symposium, a one-day event that brings together sailors to learn about everything from race strategy and weather routing to offshore safety and boat preparation. It’s a can’t-miss gathering for anyone serious about long-distance cruising or competitive sailing along the U.S. East Coast. Whether you’re planning your first offshore passage or dreaming of Bermuda, this episode offers inspiration, real-world lessons, and a deep dive into the spirit of adventure that defines ocean racing. ⛵ Keywords: sailing podcast, offshore racing, Roy Greenwald, Valiant 42, Newport to Bermuda Race, Marion to Bermuda Race, ocean crossings, Northeast Ocean Race Symposium, cruising, East Coast sailing. We kicked off 2025 in Florida in the US. In February we sailed over to the Bahamas and made our way South. In June we crossed over to Turks and Caicos Islands. Late June we finally sailed to the Dominican Republic for Hurricane season. End of September we flew to Canada to visit family and enjoy the snow. And late November we flew back to our sailboat in the Dominican Republic. Merry Christmas from the Alaskan Gypsy. This video follows our holiday travel across Alaska as we bring all five kids together for Christmas. The journey starts in Wrangell, flying through Southeast Alaska to Anchorage, renting a car, driving to Homer to gather belongings, then heading back to Anchorage before flying everyone home to Wrangell. Once back, the kids see the Gypsy for the first time, Christmas lights are up, and the boat becomes home for the holidays. From winter travel logistics to first impressions, refit progress, freezing temperatures, and Christmas morning aboard, this is a real look at a family holiday spent in motion. Thanks to everyone who supported us along the way. More adventures ahead. RSHYR 2025 | Min River wins IRC Overall - After little more than 10 years of sailing - which remarkably, has included five Sydney Hobarts and a Fastnet Race – Jiang Lin, with renowned French co-skipper Alexis Loison has won the Tattersall Cup for IRC Overall in the 80th edition of the Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht Race. Jiang becomes not only the first Double Handed owner/skipper to win the Tattersall Cup, but she will be the first woman to have her name engraved on that famous trophy.
Sailing and Crusing life rarely goes to plan but sometimes we have to fail to let magic find us. In This week's sailing episode, we tried and nothing really worked out, but that was until this unforgettable moment happened. *Want to support us?" A short sail with big lessons learned 🌊 With 25 knots of wind blowing, this day aboard Seakat quickly turned into a hands-on lesson in sail handling, boat control, and staying calm when things don’t go exactly to plan. Yes… we accidentally backed the headsail 😅 — but that’s all part of learning the ropes. Strong winds, real mistakes, and real takeaways are what make sailing such a powerful teacher. We found a gorgeous mooring in Waldringfield — the perfect place to drop the hook, take a breath, and enjoy the calm after a windy sail. We hopped in the tender and headed ashore for dinner at the Maybush Inn, a classic riverside pub and the ideal way to end the day. In this video, we take you along for a high-wind sail, sharing what went right, what went wrong, and what we learned along the way — followed by one of those simple sailing moments that make it all worthwhile. ⚓ Expect: • Sailing in 25-knot winds • Real-world sail handling mistakes (and fixes) • Lessons learned under pressure • Finding a beautiful mooring spot • Tendering ashore for a well-earned pub dinner • Honest sailing experiences — no sugarcoating • Life aboard Seakat If you’re into sailing vlogs, seamanship lessons, learning to sail, or boat life, make sure to like, subscribe, and sail along with us as we keep learning every time we leave the dock. #SuffolkSailing #RiverDeben #EastCoastSailing #UKSailing #BoatLifeUK
Every boat has the same problem: smoke, smells, and moisture from cooking. Most people put up with it. I don't. Every smoky meal leaves a little ghost behind. The fix isn't fancy. Just a simple seamanship thing to protect your boat.
This week we continue our trek down east along the Maine coast. Summer breezes are sometimes so light as to oblige me to get to work with the sculling oar, and at other times, well, the sailing is near perfect. Set that against the backdrop of the bold, rocky coast of Maine whose beauty has few equals anywhere in the world, and I hold that this is the video to you into the proper state of mind to take on 2026. With the big guns tied to the dock in Hobart the stopwatches were running to see who would take overall victory on corrected time in IRC. Like the supermaxis, this too became a tight battle but with a twist at the end. This feature is an amended version of our first 2025 Sydney Hobart Race report so if you've already watched that skip to 04:15 to pick up the latest news on the IRC victory.
