Day 7 at sea. Today was one of those days where you learn an important lesson. I woke up to my AIS alarm going off and ran outside to see a boat way too close for comfort. Big waves, strong winds, dark conditions… not exactly the kind of thing you want to wake up to half asleep. I called them on the radio straight away to make sure we both knew where the other one was and what we were doing. In the end, I changed course to avoid any risk of collision. And honestly, it shook me a bit. One thing I’m really realizing out here is how vulnerable you are as a small boat. Even if you technically have right of way, that doesn’t mean the other boat sees you properly. And it definitely doesn’t guarantee they’ll follow the rules. What frustrated me most was that they never called me. If they had called and said, “Hey, we’re struggling to see you, what’s your plan?” that would’ve been completely different. But there was nothing. And if my AIS alarm hadn’t woken me up… this could have gone very differently. So today made me very grateful for that alarm system. But it was also a reminder that just because other boats have professional crews onboard, it doesn’t automatically mean everything is under control. People make mistakes. People miss things. And it also reminded me of my own responsibility out here. I’m sailing solo. I am vulnerable. If something happens, I’m the one in trouble. And technically, I’m supposed to keep watch at all times… but at some point, I also need to sleep. This time, everything turned out okay. After months of waiting, my new catamaran finally leaves the dock for her first sail and sea trial! We start the day getting off the dock and heading out for the yacht’s first real test on the water. Before putting her fully through her paces, we sail over to the lee of an island to test the anchor, lower the Highfield dinghy, and take it for a quick run. Of course, it wouldn’t be a Sailing Doodles sea trial without a little chaos — Cougar decides to jump off the dinghy into the water, and I have to turn around to rescue him. Then it’s time for the big moment: we pull up the anchor, roll out the sails, and see how this new production catamaran actually performs. I was honestly really happy with the results. We managed 6.8 knots of boat speed in 11.7 knots of wind, which is about half wind speed — pretty impressive for a production cruising catamaran. This was the first real sail on my new yacht, and I think a lot of people will be surprised by how well she performs. Thanks for watching Sailing Doodles! Herrlichster Sonnenschein bei der Pfingstregatta 2026 von Rostock nach Kühlungsborn. Der Wind ließ zwischenzeitlich etwas nach, trotzdem kamen die meisten der ca. 50 Segelyachten rechtzeitig ins Ziel, um bei Siegerehrung und Feuerwerk den Tag im Yachthafen Kühlungsborn ausklingen zu lassen. Auch am folgenden Sonntag wurde gesegelt, dazu später hier mehr. Danke an die Veranstalter und Helfer der Segelvereine aus Rostock und Kühlungsborn.

While the first event of the 38th America's Cup cycle was eagerly awaited, no one dared hope that it would be this good. But over five days the Sardinian town of Cagliari delivered a superb event culminating in a final day that few, if anyone, had anticipated. Matt Sheahan was there and reports on a day of action in Luna Rossa's home town.

A mini adventure. We tested our Highfield Classic 290 Rib with our Epropulsion Spirit 1 by going from Gallows Point (Beaumaris) to Menai Bridge for a takeaway. Then we went under the Menai Bridge, through the Swellies, under the Britannia Bridge to the statue of Lord Nelson. We got back under the Britannia Bridge and about halfway through the Swellies before we had to tie up to a tree and wait for slack water. After a wait I rowed up the eddies to the Menai Bridge, from there we were able to gently motor out of the tidal stream all the way back. We used about 3/4 of both batteries.

After a screaming gale I get light airs. Not complaining, although the slow progress does get frustrating after a while.
