Some of the biggest waves on Earth are invisible — up to 170 metres tall, taller than a 50-storey tower. And the ship sailing above feels nothing. They form in the Luzon Strait between Taiwan and the Philippines. Twice a day, the tide pushes the ocean over two underwater ridges and drags down the thermocline — the sharp boundary between warm, light water on top and cold, heavy water below. When the tide eases, that dip is released and steepens into a train of giant internal waves that travel hundreds of kilometres west across the South China Sea. At the surface the sea rises by less than an inch, but radar satellites can see them from space as bright bands of ripples. We Were Starving at a Remote Atoll... Then They Handed Us This 🐱🏺 120 miles into the open ocean, anchored at the remote atoll of Ontong Java, we hit a wall. For weeks, relentless winds and a dangerous swell kept us pinned. With a reef that only offered protection at low tide and our food stores dwindling to almost nothing, "island fever" began to set in. To keep from going stir-crazy, Poppy turned into a master fly-hunter, refining a technique to catch the generations of flies that have called our boat home. But just as we were reaching our breaking point, the wind dropped, and something truly extraordinary happened. A group of locals paddled for hours across the lagoon in an open canoe to bring us a gift. We expected fish or coconuts, but instead, they handed us a glass jar. Inside was a tiny, wide-eyed kitten. On an atoll where food is so scarce that almost anything is considered a meal, we weren't sure if this was a pet or a protein source—until they waved goodbye and left us with our new permanent crew member: Solly. Just after coffee the sky darkened and minutes later furious wind and rain of 70kts were unleashed. for over 30 minutes it lasted while I watched helpless from the cockpit of my boat. My mooring held, but a steel boat washed by just a few meters away. 10 boats ended up on the beach that day. I live on my boat and this was a day I will not forget. I was lucky not to have been smashed into by other boats

Sidste år bemærkede vi nemlig, at vores storfald – det reb, som vi hiver storsejlet op i masten med – var skamfilet efter en sejlads. Dét er ikke et godt tegn 🚨 Vi fandt ud af, at det lille hjul, som skulle dreje i takt med, at tovværket er i bevægelse, var stoppet med at rulle og faktisk var slidt fuldkommen op! Så kan man jo godt forstå, at det slider på storfaldet. Heldigvis havde vi et fald parallelt med det, der var ødelagt, som vi kunne bruge til fortsat at sejle med storsejlet. For at skifte det lille hjul, som hedder skivgat, skulle man have toppen af masten af, og for at få toppen af masten af skulle man slække helt ud på topvanterne – de wirer, der går helt til tops i masten. Det var alt sammen et arbejde, som ville være langt nemmere ved at tage masten af. For udover skivgattet ville vi også gerne have tjekket riggen igennem af en professionel. Han anbefalede, at vi skiftede hele den stående rig – alle wirerne – og det havde vi også lidt forventet. Så nu er den skiftet sammen med skivgattet, masten er på igen, og den er klar til at krydse Atlanten! 🏝️🌊🐳⛵️

BACK ON DREAM! But Where's Jenny? | D-Log 313 I'm finally back aboard Dream in Crete, Greece, after several weeks away in the UK. But this time, I'm here on my own. So where's Jenny, and why hasn't she come back with me? Our original plan was to return to Greece together for a couple of weeks to enjoy some sunshine and get Dream ready for the winter. Unfortunately, family circumstances have changed, and we've had to make some difficult decisions. In this week's D-Log, I'll explain what's happening, why I'm back aboard Dream alone, and what the next few weeks have in store. Thankfully, Dream has behaved herself while we've been away, but there's still plenty to do before I can leave her safely tucked up in the marina for the winter. From sorting out the onboard CCTV security system and taking down the genoa to preparing the cockpit, fitting the winter tent and organising a long-awaited repair, my job list is growing by the day! And it's not just the boat that needs attention. My scooter also needs its MOT and preparing for the winter months. On the plus side, it's wonderful to be back in Crete, with beautiful blue skies and temperatures still approaching 30°C in October! Join me aboard the Y7, a luxury carbon sailing yacht, for a detailed review from a naval architect’s perspective. From the guest cabins to the engine room, I explain what works well and what I would change before placing an order. The Y7 combines a sailing-focused carbon construction with a carefully finished interior. In this full yacht tour, we look at what that means for everyday life aboard, including circulation, storage, equipment access and the practical details that deserve attention when choosing a boat. We begin at the stern, with the swim platform and tender garage. The hatch arrangement and lack of a crane raise questions about handling the tender and its outboard. I explain how I would redesign the opening to preserve a working surface and allow for a removable davit. It is one of the areas I would discuss before ordering this yacht. Below deck, we explore the salon, both guest cabins and the owner’s suite. There is plenty of natural light, beautifully finished woodwork and careful detailing in the bathrooms. The carbon mast passes through the salon, while the owner’s cabin includes an unexpected walk-in closet. We also examine features that can be easy to overlook during a quick viewing. Protruding toggle switches deserve consideration on a boat that sails heeled, and the guest showers feel small for a yacht of this level. Throughout the tour, I look at how the spaces might work when the boat is moving, as well as how they look alongside. The galley brings up another set of decisions. Witness the first-ever tubefootsteps of a lab-raised sunflower sea star (Pycnopodia helianthoides) on a wild California reef! I was honored to be able to tag along with the Sunflower Star Laboratory on this monumental day for the recovery of California's kelp forests. This was a very emotional day for me. I remember seeing these stars vanish before our eyes, before really understanding what the impact was going to be. I saw the reefs get run over, run down, and ruined. Since then, I've been involved with documenting kelp declines, restoration efforts, documentaries, awareness campaigns, from the state level to local coffee shops. At the end of the day, I'm still diving because I miss those groves I learned to blow bubbles in. Working alongside Sunflower Star Laboratory has been a life-affirming partnership. I'm getting see my good friend Andrew Kim and his aquaculturing genius come to life in these stars. I'm getting to witness the future being rebuilt in each little increment, and learning to not take anything I get to see beneath the waves for granted.
