This is it – the very first sail on my new-to-me Grinde! I travel to Friesland to pick her up. The previous owner takes the time to walk me through the boat and explains how everything works: quirks of the rigging, the electrical system, the quirks of the BetaMarine engine, and all the little details only an owner knows. Then, together with my good friend Gwen, we sail her all the way back to my home marina in Muiderzand. The water is that deep, dark green typical of the IJsselmeer, the wind is strong and gusty, and honestly… I’m a bit nervous. It’s been a while since I last sailed a boat single-handed. Do I still remember how everything works? Reefing, trimming, docking – it all comes rushing back. Crosbie talked to navigator and meteorologist Will Oxley shortly after the ACSBWPS Cabbage Tree Island Race about SHK Scallywags preparations for the Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht Race and why being outgunned by Master Lock Comanche in the Cabbage Tree Island Race conditions that better suited her was not a concern for the Scallywag team, who used the opportunity to hone other areas of their performance. He also describes the close run contest for Line Honours in the 2025 Rolex Fastnet Race that played out between SHK Scallywag and Black Jack.

The 1904 built Maritimo Katwinchar raced to Hobart for the first time in 1951 when a group of English friends sailed her to Sydney from the UK and were persuaded to join the race. Maritimo owner Bill Barry-Cotter was keen to find out what had happened to Katwinchar after his father owned her 1960s, so when the boat was found languishing in a backwater on the Central Coast – and for sale on Gumtree - Bill Barry-Cotter went about restoring her. Skipper Michael Spies who raced her to Hobart in the Double Handed division in 2024 says that Katwinchar has always been a very fast boat – and he’s looking to prove as much, racing her with a full crew in 2025. Amongst his team will be Scott Kaufman, famed yacht designer and sailor and Emma Rankin, a graduate of the 18 Footers academy and the first female skipper to win an 18 foot skiff NSW Championship race.

Grant Wharington explains some of the recent upgrades to Wild Thing 100, most notably the taller mast. He also clarifies that while Wild Thing 100’s mast is shorter than the other 100 footers, her longer boom means that she carries a very similar total mainsail area. Listen out too for his explanation as to why the daggerboards on some 100 footers are more toe-in and others more toe-out.

Jim Murray who sails his TP52 Callisto out of the Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron has enjoyed a successful 2025 with the outstanding performance of his GP42 of the same name at the Admiral’s Cup in the UK, taking 2nd overall in Class 2 and finishing 8th overall in the Rolex Fastnet Race. His highly experienced crew includes Dean Barker, Stu Bannatyne, Ian Moore and Justin Ferris.
