1,800 miles from the nearest road, my autopilot exploded into pieces on my lap. Three and a half days into an 18-day crossing from Ecuador to Easter Island, on a light catamaran with small rudders and no displacement, the wheel pilot's ring snapped, the belt cut itself in four places, and the ball bearings went everywhere. No bailout. No spare. Pitcairn was 1,200 miles west. Antarctica was south. We had to make it work with what was on board. We anchored the Alaskan Gypsy near an old trailhead outside of Wrangell, Alaska and set off by paddleboard to explore a place neither of us had ever been before. What started as a simple morning hike turned into an incredible journey through Southeast Alaska rainforest, abandoned mill history, raging glacier-fed water, edible plants, and a stunning hidden mountain lake. Along the way we share what safety gear we bring for remote Alaska adventures, why paddleboards work so well for beach access from a sailboat, and some of the realities of wilderness travel in bear country. We also explore remnants of an old sawmill deep in the Tongass National Forest and forage fiddleheads and medicinal Devil’s Club shoots along the trail. This easy hike near Wrangell turned out to be one of the most beautiful hidden spots we’ve explored so far in Southeast Alaska. After a long Arctic winter in Finnsnes, it is finally time to slip the lines and begin a new sailing season in Northern Norway. This week Impavidus comes out of the water for the usual haul-out jobs — cleaning back the Coppercoat, polishing the topsides and checking everything underneath the boat. But while inspecting the underwater gear, we discovered something that genuinely surprised me. One set of anodes was disappearing far faster than expected… and the reason turned out to be something I suspect many saildrive and shaft-drive owners may never even have considered. In this video we look at: ⚓ Saildrive and propeller anodes ⚓ Zinc vs aluminium anodes ⚓ Rope cutters and electrical continuity ⚓ Galvanic corrosion explained simply ⚓ Why some anodes disappear much faster than others ⚓ The importance of electrically isolated propellers We also explain how certain rope cutter and shaft arrangements can unintentionally create an electrical path between underwater components, dramatically changing how the protection system behaves. ⚓ Ist das aktuell einer der besten Marine LiFePO4 Akkus am Markt? Ich teste den Humsienk 640Ah Smart Edition Akku auf meiner Segelyacht Scirocco — und das Ergebnis hat mich ehrlich überrascht. Nach einem vollständigen Kapazitätstest konnte ich unglaubliche 672Ah entnehmen, bevor das BMS abgeschaltet hat. Damit liefert der Akku sogar mehr Kapazität als angegeben. Anschließend habe ich den Akku geöffnet und mir das Innenleben genauer angesehen: ✔ Smart BMS ✔ Verarbeitung & Verkabelung ✔ Sicherheitsfunktionen ✔ Temperaturabschaltung ✔ Low Temperature Protection Test ✔ Praxistest fürs Segelboot Außerdem teste ich direkt am offenen Akku, ob die Temperaturabschaltung des BMS tatsächlich funktioniert und wie sich der Akku bei Minusgraden verhält. Vi bygger en egen åskledare och djupdyker i olika teorier kring blixtskydd ombord. Vad händer egentligen om båten träffas? Varför måste ofta all elektronik bytas även om båten ser oskadd ut? Och vad har vi själva valt att satsa på inför den kommande seglingen? Vi upptäcker också Panama City, en stad med extrema kontraster där det ibland känns svårt att veta vilka områden som är säkra. En kort promenad kan snabbt övergå till slumområden, tropiskt regn och märkliga möten. Som tur är fungerar Uber överraskande smidigt, billigt och snabbt. Mellan alla förberedelser försöker vi också njuta av platsen: pelikaner, tvättbjörnar och sengångare dyker upp runt oss, vi testar färskt sockerrör, flyr hettan med AC-pauser i shoppingcenter och tar en välbehövlig chilldag på Taboga Island. Dessutom fyller Niklas år 🎉

Free power and unlimited water on the UK's canals? As sailors on the open oceans, we lived completely independently. We created our own power and produced our own water. It was a lifestyle we've been wanting to replicate on the canals of the UK, and now that we're continuous cruisers, we have achieved this. In fact, we are producing so much power we don't know what to do with it, and so much water we can shower every day - not that we do! We do all of this as we continue eastwards along the Stainforth and Keadby Canal towards the River Trent. Along the way, we encounter Maud's Swing Bridge, which appears to be broken, and the Crook O’Moor Swing Bridge at Medge Hall before tying up at Groves Farm. We take in some incredible scenery that truly highlights British nature at its best. We’ve been doing this for about six years now and we’re still enjoying the heck out of sailboat life. Looking out at the water from the cockpit is one of the many pleasures of boat life. Making sure that’s a crystal clear view, Karen cleans the Strataglass. She carefully removed any dirt with a wet cloth and then applied some IMAR protective cleaner. The effect is dazzling. As Karen does yoga Steve feels the impulse to recite poetry. After a few stretching exercises, she does some jumping jacks and windmills. It’s always more fun to exercise on the deck than at the gym; although, sometimes it can be more of a challenge as the boats moves in the water.
