Then we go one step further: working with Claude AI, we built a closed-loop generator load optimizer — GenOpt — that runs natively on the Cerbo and automatically manages the AC input current limit in real time. ► 22 years after Jean-Luc Van Den Heede, the young Breton sailor is welcomed as a hero in Brest: aboard his large trimaran MACSF, he has just broken the record for a round-the-world voyage against the prevailing winds by 28 days. We were able to welcome him in the harbor and share his first moments ashore. ► Last summer, while Guirec Soudée's transatlantic warm-up with the famous YouTuber Inoxtag (see MW203) may have resembled a vacation, it was in fact to prepare both man and his boat for an extreme project – a solo, non-stop circumnavigation of the globe via the three great capes… but not in the usual direction. This time, the approach is to head straight for Cape Horn, followed by Cape Leeuwin and the Cape of Good Hope, which must be left to starboard. ► The Breton sailor thus left his home port of Lorient at the end of December aboard his Ultim MACSF. Two days before Christmas, the solo sailor crossed the starting line of the round-the-world race between the island of Ouessant and the Cape Lizard. Ahead of his bows lies a 22,000-nautical mile direct route against wind and currents. While Guirec is a particularly seasoned and determined sailor - he has already completed a double transatlantic row - the challenge of this round-the-world voyage is colossal. Even the greatest sailors, like Thomas Coville, fresh from his record-breaking Jules Verne Trophy, readily admits: "It's a challenge that impresses me and that I think I would never have been able to take on. It's extraordinary. I don't know if people really realize what he's doing, but it truly defies everything in terms of adventure." ► One can only imagine the intense pressure the sailor must have been under until that liberating crossing of the finish line. We don’t live in Port Protection, Alaska full time, but we’ve been here for a stretch working on a remote project, and this is what our days look like while we’re here. With foundation work paused while the concrete sets, we head out by skiff to Point Baker. Spend the day working on outboards, troubleshooting small engines, and sorting through a stack of generators to see what can be brought back to life. Back in Port Protection, the tide is coming up and the timbers we staged for the project need to be moved before they float off. We paddle out and get them higher above the waterline before the next high tide. This is day-to-day life working in remote Alaska. Boat access, changing weather, mechanical problem solving, and staying ahead of the tides. Like many people in Japan and around the world, I was saddened by the recent boating tragedy off Henoko in Okinawa, where a 17-year-old high school student and a 71-year-old captain lost their lives. I’ve been asked by many viewers to comment—particularly in comparison to the La Vagabonde incident. These are very different situations, and in this video I aim to clarify what matters: the legal framework, the captain's role, weather advisories, and the shared responsibility of everyone who steps on board. This story also resonates with me personally. I am a 71-year-old captain of a small vessel. I have served on the board of a school. And I am a grandfather whose grandson goes on school trips like this. The captain's age in this case has also raised important questions—especially in a country like Japan, where people remain active, licensed, and engaged well into later life. Experience brings wisdom, but it does not remove risk. This is not about assigning blame. It is about understanding responsibility—legal, cultural, and practical—and how safety at sea depends on every link in the chain.
