We've been sailing full-time on our Leopard catamaran for more than 6 years but to us, this lifestyle has always been about more than just sunsets and rainbows. When islands get hit by cyclones, Sea Mercy Fiji are first on the scene to support the villages that have been impacted, but during the rest of the year, they send medical supplies to the most remote hospitals in the Lau group - the most remote islands in the country. This week, we are loading up Indioko in Savusavu with medical equipment and supplies for the hospital in Lakeba, 100 miles away. Wanna get down and dirty; maybe get lucky? Well, that’s what Karen asked Steve as she tried to get him to take a break from working in the owner's cabin. The reverse cycle unit there has often needed a slight boost provided by a gentle breeze from a Ryobi battery operated fan directed at the thermostat to keep the unit running efficiently cool and cycling properly. Steve installed a Caframo Bora fan strategically aimed which solved the issue. Surprise, surprise, surprise! We now have a second chartplotter. The Garmin 8610xsv will be an awesome addition to the existing Garmin 1242xsv in the cockpit. It has a 10 inch touch screen and the latest U.S. South - Lakes, Rivers and Coastal Marine Charts. It was a huge undertaking to route all the required cables through the salon ceiling, into the engine room where they would be accessible in both the den/navigation area and cockpit. Whew, glad that activity is over and that once connected everything worked. Next, final installation in the cockpit and enjoyment of looking at two chartplotters. (Constructions Nautiques du Sud-Ouest). Isabella is a sailing ketch and is considered a 1990/2010 model. It has four private cabins, an engine room, salon, galley, and three heads with two separate shower stalls. The hull is fiberglass and is considered a bluewater cruiser. Isabella has an excellent capsize ratio of 1.68 and a very good comfort ratio of 42.19. She is equipped with Garmin / Raymarine electronics and has hydraulic steering. The naval architect was Michel Bigoin who also designed the largest sailboat in the world which was manufactured in 1976 and called Phocea. It was a 246 foot four masted steel schooner and was considered the largest private sailing yacht in the world until 2004. **On a boat like this, even installing a LIGHT SWITCH can turn into an all-day project. 😂** After four weeks of working on the boat, we’ve learned a few things — including some lessons about painting that we definitely wish we’d learned sooner! I’ve been spending most of my time outside in the blazing summer sun working on the cabin top. After sanding down the gelcoat and filling the low spots in previous episodes, we’ve spent the last few weeks experimenting with rolling on our Alexseal topcoat. The good news? **It can be done!** The bad news? We discovered the hard way that every bit of fairing compound needs to be properly covered with primer before the topcoat goes on. Otherwise… well, let’s just say there’s more sanding in my future. 😬 Meanwhile, Matt has been working on getting the cockpit ready for paint while jumping back and forth to the boat’s electrical systems. And that’s where another surprisingly complicated project came up: mounting all of the light switches. Our previous aluminum boat made this job easy. This fiberglass catamaran? Not even close. Each switch location requires custom plugs, drilling, de-coring the foam, removing paint, glassing the plug into place, and eventually fairing and painting everything so the finished installation looks like it was always meant to be there. It's a lot of work for something you normally don't even think twice about! Une fois en sécurité, on se lance dans une longue recherche pour trouver la cause du problème et réparer le système avant de poursuivre notre traversée. Depois de deixar Santo André, na Bahia, encaramos uma baita velejada rumo ao Iate Clube Aratu, em Salvador. Foram dois dias e duas noites no mar, navegando pelas águas da costa baiana em uma daquelas velejadas que ficam na memória. Apoitei o Balanço em frente à Federação de Vela e Motor, ao lado do Mercado do Peixe, e passei alguns dias conhecendo a cidade a pé. A caminhada vai da orla de Pajuçara até o centro histórico. O farol da Ponta Verde, inaugurado em 1922 com luz a gás acetileno e eletrificado só em 1986. O Marco dos Corais, um píer com passarela de metal e vidro dentro da APA Costa dos Corais, a maior unidade de conservação marinha costeira do Brasil, criada em 1997 e ampliada em 2025 para 495 mil hectares. Centenas de jangadas prontas em terra e nenhuma na água, e a história da palavra, que veio do sul da Índia mas descreve um barco que os indígenas daqui já faziam. O Teatro Deodoro, construído entre 1905 e 1910, com uma orquestra ensaiando no prédio ao lado. A Catedral Nossa Senhora dos Prazeres, de 1859, no lugar onde a cidade começou. Também passo pela avenida de onde se vê o que restou de cinco bairros que Maceió perdeu há oito anos, quando o chão começou a afundar e as rachaduras nos prédios ficaram sérias demais. Cerca de 60 mil pessoas deixaram suas casas. Cientistas alemães constataram depois que a região vinha afundando por volta de 10 centímetros por ano desde 2004. A causa foi a forma como foi feita a mineração de salgema pela Braskem, que pagou em média 200 mil reais de indenização por casa e hoje é dona do terreno. Gente do mercado estima esse terreno em algo perto de 40 bilhões de reais, mas é uma estimativa, não um valor oficial. No meio de tudo isso, uma conversa sobre o quanto planejar e o quanto deixar em aberto. Ela começa na poita que segura o barco: o peso da corrente no fundo forma uma curva no cabo, chamada catenária, e é justamente essa folga que absorve os impactos. Em Florianópolis, alguns anos atrás, a maré subiu mais do que o normal, o cabo das poitas ficou curto e uns dez barcos foram parar na praia no mesmo dia.
