People love to label Bali catamarans as “dock condos,” or "condomarans" and the loudest criticism is always the same: "they are not built for real offshore sailing." This video takes that claims seriously and looks at what is actually being judged, the boat, the setup, or the expectations. 00:00 What the Critics Say 00:30 Myth "Balis don't sail well": Crossing the Atlantic on a Bali 02:03 The "rental car" effect, why charter spec setups skew impressions 03:02 Myth "Bali isn't well built" 04:27 Myth "Interior Finishings are Low-End" Quality of the Interiors 05:32 Myth "The Price is too cheap" and how pricing works 06:54 The Reception of the Bali 5.2 and Future of Bali Stephen from Catamaran Guru and Boris from Catana Group walk through the main points behind the debate, how charter-spec configurations can shape performance impressions, what changes when an owner chooses a different sail plan, and what construction details they point to when discussing strength, stiffness, and long-range capability. They also address the pricing conversation and why cost, materials, and production methods get misunderstood in online discussions. We start where many critics do, “Balis don’t sail.” Boris explains why many people are unknowingly testing charter-spec catamarans, the charter setup is the sailing equivalent of an airport rental car. Stephen contrasts that with a properly spec’d owner version and owner spec sail plan upgrades, overlapping headsail, Code Zero, square top main, laminate sails, and spinnakers, plus how these sail choices affect upwind sailing, pointing, and real-world catamaran performance. To prove it is not just theory, Stephen shares his Atlantic crossing on a Bali 5.4 alongside about 50+ catamarans during the 2019 ARC rally, surfing at 18 knots and logging 200+ mile days, finishing ahead of larger cats. Read more here: https://catamaranguru.com/arc-rally-began/?utm_source=youtube&utm_medium=description&utm_campaign=bali&utm_term=myths&utm_content=arc_rally Next, they tackle the idea that Bali interiors are “cheap.” Boris explains how Catana Group invested in in-house carpentry and industrial processes, so today’s Bali interiors and finish are a big step up from early models. The visible finish has improved, but just as important is the hidden quality, structure, joinery, and how everything is tied into the hull. On structure, Stephen and Boris go deep into how these boats are built. They talk lamination schedules, bulkhead tabbing, and the solid foredeck that creates a stiff box section instead of a flexy trampoline. Stephen points out that when he is driving his Bali hard, the leeward shrouds stay tight, a simple test that the catamaran platform is not twisting. They also look at the core, closed-cell Divinycell foam. Unlike balsa, Divinycell is discussed here as a closed-cell foam core option used in sandwich construction. Finally, they address pricing, including COVID-era supplier cost spikes, repricing, and how volume production and industrial carpentry factor into Bali catamaran cost and value. Today the crew and I head out for a quick one day sail from Tobago to Grenada. It’s the perfect chance to put the crew on the spot and find out if they really have any clue how to sail this boat. But more importantly, today we’ll cross Doc’s circumnavigation line—marking the technical completion of his sail around the globe.. Pretty incredible. Stick around as we explore the natural wonder of Grenada, and some of the most unique dive sites on earth.. ------------------------------------------ EXCLUSIVE CONTENT!!: https://www.patreon.com/sailingrippleeffect ------------------------------------------ Watch Season 10: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K1CA-bu-rW0&list=PLEz8PmTM4lWBzU9d-_qLVRnQsaDb5D-ft Watch Season 9: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ReB90uELXV8&list=PLEz8PmTM4lWA-ObNyQan-3_XqLKsgJFmW Watch Season 8: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xIVCzMdoWBA&list=PLEz8PmTM4lWDtf6jfHdIgHPL7oGtAWMt3 Watch Season 7: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=afaTfAmnuMs&list=PLEz8PmTM4lWDK2c2YW8rr55wjvf74934g Watch Season 6: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3-1Jkl4rCMY&list=PLEz8PmTM4lWDu_xLN0JFnx-YX5lSgzXq3&index=1&t=57s Watch Season 4: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l7IrEwJVnHI&list=PLEz8PmTM4lWDG7tstlqR3O1M2fkQQT8-A Watch Season 3: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0nsvIT8jNl8&t=131s Watch Season 2: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yt7prknxHOA Watch Season 1: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1Z1OuEPXG-w ------------------------------------------ Follow Mara: https://www.instagram.com/mararipple/ Follow Doc: https://www.instagram.com/docgastone/ Follow Owen: https://www.instagram.com/owenrivers_/ Follow Ellie: https://www.instagram.com/elliewolfee/ Follow Josephine: https://www.instagram.com/josephine.rll/ #sailingtheworld #Grenada #Caribbean

Spain’s Karol Krupski moved into the overall lead in the men’s ILCA 7 fleet after four races and one discard. Despite a 13th-place finish in the first race of the day, Krupski bounced back with a second place to sit on four net points. Italy’s Ginevra Caracciolo continues to lead the ILCA 6 women’s fleet after maintaining her advantage for a second consecutive day. Greece’s Hermione Ghicas moved up to second overall, while Spain’s newly crowned ILCA Youth World Champion Irene de Tomás climbed into third place after finishing second and fourth in Tuesday’s races. #lanzarotesailingcenter
iFLY Foiling Days – Auckland, New Zealand (16 Jan – 14 Feb 2026) This footage was captured during the ongoing iFLY Foiling Days on Auckland’s North Shore. The event runs through 14 February 2026, with iFLY RAZZOR Pro hydrofoil catamarans sailed in real coastal sea conditions. Coaching sessions are available. Participation and enquiries: https://iflysail.com/contact/ Heavy-Weather Foiling – iFLY RAZZOR Pro This video documents an iFLY RAZZOR Pro sailed in strong, unstable wind with a developing sea state. Short-period waves, gust fronts and uneven pressure define the session. These are not beginner conditions. The boat is configured for high wind, using a 7.5 m storm mainsail on the 8.5 m mast. The reduced sail area limits aerodynamic load while maintaining balance and foil efficiency as wind strength and surface disturbance increase. Flight Control and Setup The RAZZOR Pro shown here is equipped with active main-foil differential rake control (MDT), enabling continuous adjustment of lift and righting moment while foiling. In these conditions, rake control becomes a primary tool for maintaining stable flight attitude through gust transitions and wave interaction, rather than relying on reactive steering or sail trim alone. Context This session represents one end of the iFLY operating range. From controlled foiling in moderate conditions to demanding heavy-weather sailing, the boat’s behaviour changes with setup, environment and sailor input. This clip reflects the upper limit of that range — where precision, timing and restraint define performance. Design Perspective The iFLY RAZZOR Pro combines carbon-composite construction, a four-foil configuration with automatic and manual control layers, and a refined flight-stability concept. The session illustrates how a high-performance foiling catamaran behaves in an unmodified coastal wind-wave environment, in contrast to flat-water testing, and why such conditions require confidence, discipline and an understanding of active foil systems. Join the iFLY Foiling Days The iFLY Foiling Days 2026 offer on-water demonstrations, coaching and technical exchange with the iFLY team and experienced sailors. For booking, setup discussions or attendance before 14 February 2026, please contact: https://iflysail.com/contact/
Catamaran vs Luxury Villa — Choose Freedom A catamaran is more than a yacht — it’s your moving waterfront villa. Instead of one address, one view, one neighborhood — you get the entire Mediterranean as your backyard. Today the French Riviera. Tomorrow Capri. Next week Greece or Croatia. Your home travels with you. Why a Catamaran Beats Traditional Real Estate • Private luxury villa on the water • Direct access to the sea — your own “private beach” • Panoramic views from every cabin • Total privacy and comfort • The freedom to change countries without changing your home A hotel gives you a room. A villa gives you one location. A catamaran gives you a lifestyle without borders. Easier Than You Think Modern catamarans are stable, intuitive and simple to operate: – Smart navigation systems – Mobile weather and marina booking – Fuel-efficient engines – Minimal rolling and maximum comfort No license? No problem. Boatmarket Corp provides complimentary skipper training with every Fountaine Pajot or Dufour purchase. A beachfront villa starts from €3,000,000+. A luxury Fountaine Pajot catamaran starts from ≈€500,000 — with the waterfront living space and far more freedom. Non-EU buyers can save up to 20% VAT through legal export via Montenegro, with the ability to cruise EU waters for extended periods. Full Support by Boatmarket Corp • Maintenance & refit • Winter storage • Delivery to any destination • Interior personalization • Lifestyle equipment & upgrades Stop visiting the sea. Now it is for the actual motor batteries (and sorting the galley plus the hold downs for two of the batteries in the House 48V bank). We are now living aboard our Rival 38 Centre Cockpit full-time while finishing a refit so we can launch ASAP. Two ongoing jobs are preparing for our electric motor installation and creating a cockpit enclosure for our wheelhouse. Most people assume boat life means parties, booze, and escapism. That’s not our story. We live aboard the Alaskan Gypsy, and our version of freedom looks a little different: clarity, presence, tiny intentional choices, and a whole lot of water (like… a concerning amount of water). 😂 In this video, we share our very different paths with alcohol, sobriety, and why living simply and clearly matters even more when you live off-grid. In this video, I walk you through everything we did on the engine to eliminate each potential issue, step by step. We started by disassembling and inspecting the waterlock system (the exhaust on a water-cooled engine), then moved on to adjusting the valve clearances. While we were at it, we also changed the oil, which was clearly overdue! The job isn’t finished yet — we’re still waiting for the gaskets to reassemble everything properly, and we also noticed that the engine mounts aren’t tightened… 👉 So there’s still work ahead, but you’ll see all that in a next video! 📺 Main Playlists: 🧰 Boat Renovation https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLoqFuh2SKR9VNMaUm-yzDWpmgd4FCKP7W&si=GrOT-J9q5nP0IcRo ⛵️ Learning to Sail https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLoqFuh2SKR9XNKiNFDeohcAw99ut8sVs8&si=HffFgoo8oCLGK_hk 📦 Wanna support me? Seldén is presenting the world premiere of the E40rev, a reversible electric winch operating in two directions and with two speeds, at boot Düsseldorf 2026. I met up with Seldén's Mats-Uno Fredrikson to take a look and see its features, including the simple two-button operation, and how it works with their SEL-Bus sytem. The show is taking place between 17th and 25th January and the Seldén stand can be found in Hall 10 on Stand E21. #sailing #yachting #winch

When you've planned a long trip to the Bahamas, I'll be honest, it's hard to kick off the dock in Florida... Do we have all the food we need? Will the toilet break on us? Do we have enough fridge or freezer space? Enough solar panels? These questions can keep you from finally pushing off the dock and we finally said, "Screw it, lets go!", on January 3rd, 2026. No real plan on what to do aside from explore. Join us!
“Ever wondered how much fuel a cargo ship burns in just one day? 🚢💨 While your car might sip 5–10 liters daily, a ship’s main engine can swallow hundreds of tons in 24 hours! Ari Huusela is an aircraft mechanic and commercial airline pilot from Helsinki, Finland. He did not start sailing until the age of 24, but went on to become the first person from the Nordic countries to have finished the brutal Vendee globe round the world race. During the race he became known as the Super happy sailor thanks to his positive energy and optimism. He joins August remotely from the Norwegian Arctic, where he is skiing out of his Campervan. -- Support the podcast & become a member of The Quarterdeck, where Andy, August & Mia dive deep on the art of seam'nship. This episode provides a basic overview of international maritime day shape rules and use for sailors. Day shapes are standardized daytime signals used around the world to convey important information (towing, not under command, motor sailing, vessel is anchored, etc.) Requirements for use of day shapes by sailors vary based on the size of the vessel, inland versus coastal or international waters, and the specific circumstances (such as anchoring in a remote area versus a congested waterway). It's important for sailors to know the basic shapes and when they are required to use them. Even when exemptions for use exist, sailors can always opt to use the appropriate day shapes as a courtesy to other boaters and for enhancing safety. Day 45, Solo NonStop Circumnavigation: The forestay that supports my mast and genoa sheered a bolt. I wrestle down the genoa and try to figure out how to fix the stay. I don’t want to give up…. I guess I have to go up the mast!? It’s September 7th. In the North Atlantic. Heading towards the equator. Over 2,300 miles from the start (Grenada). 0 engine hours have been used since setting sail. WILL ANSWER ALL COMMENTS WHEN I HAVE SERVICE! ❤️ ABOUT: My name is Captain Kimmer. After tri-outs: sailing across the Atlantic without any navigation equipment, just my eyes and the stars, we’re on mission 1 of 3. A Solo NonStop Circumnavigation with a twist! I hope you enjoy the show. PATREON: Captain Kimmer For those who want to support financially, this is the best moral boost! NON PROFIT 🐶 ♋️ The Bravest Dog in the World Is About to Change It. Help Us Get There. I’m Captain Kimmer, Kimmer O’Reilly — sailor, survivor, and founder of a mission that shouldn’t be possible. Two-time blood cancer nearly took my life. When I survived, I expected joy. What came instead was an identity crisis. I didn’t know who I was anymore — just that the old me was gone. Then came Casper — my service dog, my best friend, my reason to fight forward. Now, Casper and I are doing something no one believes can be done: a nonstop solo circumnavigation of the globe… starting from the wrong side. We’re sailing east, into the wind and current, through the Southern Ocean and past the Cape of Good Hope — proving that after cancer, life isn’t over. It can be better than it ever was. But we’re not just breaking records. We’re launching a nonprofit to help cancer survivors rediscover purpose, identity, and joy. This GoFundMe isn’t just to keep our sails full. It’s to build something that lasts long after we return. Donate today — not just to help Casper and me sail around the world, but to help thousands of survivors believe they can start again. In this podcast, I answer one of the biggest questions I’ve been getting lately: who’s coming with me to Thailand on the new boat? We talk about the new boat timeline, potential crew lineup, and what this next chapter of Sailing Doodles is really going to look—both on and off camera. I also address questions about Chloe, future appearances, and how I handle bringing new people into the videos while balancing privacy, reality, and the internet’s opinions. We also dive into: Who may be joining the boat in February How crew decisions actually get made Viewer questions about drones, sailing, and life on the water What changes (and what stays the same) with the new boat Big changes ahead—this episode gives you the real story.
We’re about to cross a shallow entrance with a deep keel, so guessing isn’t an option. In this video, I show a simple way to verify actual depth with a line and a knot—then how to use that real number to set your depth sounder “offset” correctly. Key idea: your sounder measures from the transducer, not necessarily from the keel or the waterline—so the offset must be set intentionally. I’ll also show the easiest way to avoid mental math: draw a quick diagram of depth vs keel draft so you know exactly what number you need to see on the display to stay safe. 00:00 - Shallow Sandbar Crossing Setup 00:43 - DIY Depth Measurement (Line + Knot Method) 01:12 - Confirming True Depth (Measure the Line) 01:48 - Transducer Location Changes the Offset #sailing #boating #sailor #sailingschool

The traditional heritage skills of how to make a ship's wooden deck planking watertight are shared by Sailing Into Wellness, the Irish sailing charity and proud custodians of the 1926 traditionally-built A.K. ILEN ship. It involves driving fibre (cotton or oakum) into the seams, sealing them with pitch and sanding the deck smooth thereafter. 1. Preparing the deck seams: Clean the seams by removing old pitch, rotten oakum, etc. using a reefing hook or a hot knife. Planks should be clean, dry and free of old sealer, varnish or oil to maximise adhesion. 2. Caulking: Cotton is used for smaller gaps and oakum, a hemp fibre soaked in pine tar, for larger seams. Use a caulking iron to feed the fibre into the seams and a mallet to drive it home. It should be packed tightly enough to form a hard layer at the base of the seam. 3. Pouring pitch: Traditional pitch is melted in a specialised pot, poured into a vessel with a spout and then poured into the seam, filling the groove completely, adhering to the oakum and the sides of the planks. A 'hot rod' can be used to remelt the surface of the pitch, smoothing out bubbles and ensuring a smooth finish. 4: Fairing and finishing: Once the pitch has cooled, use a sharp 'putty knife' or specialised chisel to remove excess 'proud' pitch, which 'stands' above the deck-board. Sand the deck, in the direction of the wood grain, to ensure a smooth, level and 'fair' surface. TIP: Ensure the sealant/pitch does not stick to the bottom of the seam, to avoid moisture entrapment, which leads to rot, the whole reason we carry out the above process. Sailing Into Wellness is proud to pass on traditional heritage skills. This workshop was kindly funded by The Heritage Council, Ireland.
