Jonathan McKee was inducted into the National Sailing Hall of Fame in 2022. He’s a three-time Collegiate All-American and won an Olympic medal at 40. He’s won World Championships in boats as chronologically diverse as the Flying Dutchman and the 49er and also in the timeless Taser. He’s also done a mini Transat, the Barcelona World Race, and The Ocean Race. For years, he has developed a culture aboard his own boat, the Paul Bieker-designed Dark Star, that readily accepts individuals of all ages and talents and finds a way to bring out the best in all. At 60+, Jonathan is drawing from that experience as he looks forward. His perspective on continuing to sail at a high level is well worth your time. Coming to you from the front row in Les Sables d'Olonne, where the energy spiked as Vendée Globe winner Charlie Dalin was welcomed by a huge crowd, celebrating his win. Charlie had been there but never done that. In the 2020-2021 edition of the Vendee Globe race, he had been first up this channel. But he officially finished second after Yannick Bestaven was awarded time credit for coming to another sailor’s aid and achieved a well-deserved victory. Today it is Charlie’s day. There is nothing anywhere in sailing like the day the first finisher crosses the line in Les Sables d’Olonne. Harken was there, At The Front…where we must be. There will be time for analysis of the race and full examination of the Harken equipment aboard each boat after a lap of the planet. Wendy and Meg are preparing for the 2024 Rolex Sydney Hobart Race in the doublehanded division on board Sun Fast 3600 Gizmo. We caught up with them as they were headed out for a training session. The vision was simple - find a J/125 and optimize it for distance races. The execution took a lot of hard work and expertise.
