Introducing the new addition to Harken’s powered winch lineup. The DynaDrive™ winches are designed from drawing board up as powered winches. This has positive performance and deck design impacts. DynaDrive’s epicyclic design locates a two-speed gearbox on the upper part of the winch. This space-efficient design requires less area within the drum for gearing. This creates vertical space within the drum for the motors, which live almost completely within the drums. This saves headroom below deck which is very attractive to designers of large boats with cruising as the primary mission. Harken stopped by the 2025 Winter Lightning Championships last month, where the whole class was running Vakaros RaceSense, some sailors using it for the very first time. We wanted to know - what's up with all the talk about Vakaros and how are sailors responding to the new technology? We chatted with these sailors as part of our At The Front Digital Digest. Jonathan McKee was inducted into the National Sailing Hall of Fame in 2022. He’s a three-time Collegiate All-American and won an Olympic medal at 40. He’s won World Championships in boats as chronologically diverse as the Flying Dutchman and the 49er and also in the timeless Taser. He’s also done a mini Transat, the Barcelona World Race, and The Ocean Race. For years, he has developed a culture aboard his own boat, the Paul Bieker-designed Dark Star, that readily accepts individuals of all ages and talents and finds a way to bring out the best in all. At 60+, Jonathan is drawing from that experience as he looks forward. His perspective on continuing to sail at a high level is well worth your time. Harken sat down with sailing legend Augie Diaz, who is still competitive in the Lightning, Star, and Snipe classes. He talks about the dedication it takes to succeed in the sport and offers advice for younger sailors looking to build their skills. He emphasizes that while winning is great, the real reward comes from person growth, setting goals, and enjoying the journey. We chatted with these sailors as part of our At The Front Digital Digest. Coming to you from the front row in Les Sables d'Olonne, where the energy spiked as Vendée Globe winner Charlie Dalin was welcomed by a huge crowd, celebrating his win. Charlie had been there but never done that. In the 2020-2021 edition of the Vendee Globe race, he had been first up this channel. But he officially finished second after Yannick Bestaven was awarded time credit for coming to another sailor’s aid and achieved a well-deserved victory. Today it is Charlie’s day. There is nothing anywhere in sailing like the day the first finisher crosses the line in Les Sables d’Olonne. Harken was there, At The Front…where we must be. There will be time for analysis of the race and full examination of the Harken equipment aboard each boat after a lap of the planet. But for today, it’s just Bravo Charlie!!! #vendéeglobe #AtTheFront

Wendy and Meg are preparing for the 2024 Rolex Sydney Hobart Race in the doublehanded division on board Sun Fast 3600 Gizmo. We caught up with them as they were headed out for a training session. Wendy and Meg had to retire before completing the race, but credit goes to them for their efforts to reach the start line, even when the odds were against them. The Vendée Globe is the biggest nonstop unassisted solo yacht race in the world. To finish the race....no, to get to the start line, is already an incredible achievement. But, it's not just the sailors who are working nonstop. There are teams behind the scenes that ensure the safety of the sailors and a smooth running of the race. At the head of that team is Huber Lemonnier, who is the Race Officer for the 2024 Vendée Globe. Harken spoke to Hubert as part of our At The Front digital digest series. The first blood has been drawn. But in the best 7 of 13 race format, there’s still a long way to go. Since they first splashed we’ve seen what incredibly complex machines these foiling 75 footers have proven to be. In the second segment of his interview INEOS Britannia’s Freddie Carr gives an excellent summary of how power from cyclors gets into the sailplan to power the boat. The vision was simple - find a J/125 and optimize it for distance races. The execution took a lot of hard work and expertise. Callisto Racing's Project Manager, Nick Chadwick, oversaw the refit at Larsen Marine in Waukegan, Illinois, which included entirely new deck hardware from Harken. Nick explains the reasoning behind new design features and weight savers on board the new Callisto. End goal: enjoy the sailing and advance the learnings.
