This episode provides a basic overview of international maritime day shape rules and use for sailors. Day shapes are standardized daytime signals used around the world to convey important information (towing, not under command, motor sailing, vessel is anchored, etc.) Requirements for use of day shapes by sailors vary based on the size of the vessel, inland versus coastal or international waters, and the specific circumstances (such as anchoring in a remote area versus a congested waterway). It's important for sailors to know the basic shapes and when they are required to use them. Even when exemptions for use exist, sailors can always opt to use the appropriate day shapes as a courtesy to other boaters and for enhancing safety. Day 45, Solo NonStop Circumnavigation: The forestay that supports my mast and genoa sheered a bolt. I wrestle down the genoa and try to figure out how to fix the stay. I don’t want to give up…. I guess I have to go up the mast!? It’s September 7th. In the North Atlantic. Heading towards the equator. Over 2,300 miles from the start (Grenada). 0 engine hours have been used since setting sail. WILL ANSWER ALL COMMENTS WHEN I HAVE SERVICE! ❤️ ABOUT: My name is Captain Kimmer. After tri-outs: sailing across the Atlantic without any navigation equipment, just my eyes and the stars, we’re on mission 1 of 3. A Solo NonStop Circumnavigation with a twist! I hope you enjoy the show. PATREON: Captain Kimmer For those who want to support financially, this is the best moral boost! NON PROFIT 🐶 ♋️ The Bravest Dog in the World Is About to Change It. Help Us Get There. I’m Captain Kimmer, Kimmer O’Reilly — sailor, survivor, and founder of a mission that shouldn’t be possible. Two-time blood cancer nearly took my life. When I survived, I expected joy. What came instead was an identity crisis. I didn’t know who I was anymore — just that the old me was gone. Then came Casper — my service dog, my best friend, my reason to fight forward. Now, Casper and I are doing something no one believes can be done: a nonstop solo circumnavigation of the globe… starting from the wrong side. We’re sailing east, into the wind and current, through the Southern Ocean and past the Cape of Good Hope — proving that after cancer, life isn’t over. It can be better than it ever was. But we’re not just breaking records. We’re launching a nonprofit to help cancer survivors rediscover purpose, identity, and joy. This GoFundMe isn’t just to keep our sails full. It’s to build something that lasts long after we return. Donate today — not just to help Casper and me sail around the world, but to help thousands of survivors believe they can start again. In this podcast, I answer one of the biggest questions I’ve been getting lately: who’s coming with me to Thailand on the new boat? We talk about the new boat timeline, potential crew lineup, and what this next chapter of Sailing Doodles is really going to look—both on and off camera. I also address questions about Chloe, future appearances, and how I handle bringing new people into the videos while balancing privacy, reality, and the internet’s opinions. We also dive into: Who may be joining the boat in February How crew decisions actually get made Viewer questions about drones, sailing, and life on the water What changes (and what stays the same) with the new boat Big changes ahead—this episode gives you the real story.
We’re about to cross a shallow entrance with a deep keel, so guessing isn’t an option. In this video, I show a simple way to verify actual depth with a line and a knot—then how to use that real number to set your depth sounder “offset” correctly. Key idea: your sounder measures from the transducer, not necessarily from the keel or the waterline—so the offset must be set intentionally. I’ll also show the easiest way to avoid mental math: draw a quick diagram of depth vs keel draft so you know exactly what number you need to see on the display to stay safe. 00:00 - Shallow Sandbar Crossing Setup 00:43 - DIY Depth Measurement (Line + Knot Method) 01:12 - Confirming True Depth (Measure the Line) 01:48 - Transducer Location Changes the Offset #sailing #boating #sailor #sailingschool

The traditional heritage skills of how to make a ship's wooden deck planking watertight are shared by Sailing Into Wellness, the Irish sailing charity and proud custodians of the 1926 traditionally-built A.K. ILEN ship. It involves driving fibre (cotton or oakum) into the seams, sealing them with pitch and sanding the deck smooth thereafter. 1. Preparing the deck seams: Clean the seams by removing old pitch, rotten oakum, etc. using a reefing hook or a hot knife. Planks should be clean, dry and free of old sealer, varnish or oil to maximise adhesion. 2. Caulking: Cotton is used for smaller gaps and oakum, a hemp fibre soaked in pine tar, for larger seams. Use a caulking iron to feed the fibre into the seams and a mallet to drive it home. It should be packed tightly enough to form a hard layer at the base of the seam. 3. Pouring pitch: Traditional pitch is melted in a specialised pot, poured into a vessel with a spout and then poured into the seam, filling the groove completely, adhering to the oakum and the sides of the planks. A 'hot rod' can be used to remelt the surface of the pitch, smoothing out bubbles and ensuring a smooth finish. 4: Fairing and finishing: Once the pitch has cooled, use a sharp 'putty knife' or specialised chisel to remove excess 'proud' pitch, which 'stands' above the deck-board. Sand the deck, in the direction of the wood grain, to ensure a smooth, level and 'fair' surface. TIP: Ensure the sealant/pitch does not stick to the bottom of the seam, to avoid moisture entrapment, which leads to rot, the whole reason we carry out the above process. Sailing Into Wellness is proud to pass on traditional heritage skills. This workshop was kindly funded by The Heritage Council, Ireland.

This week aboard GOAT 2.0, our Lagoon 400, we officially start the next phase of upgrades by improving one of the most critical (and often overlooked) systems onboard: tank monitoring. We installed Gobius C tank sensors, bringing accurate, reliable tank level information back to the boat without drilling holes or dealing with unreliable floats. But it wasn’t all wiring and configuration—because boat life is also about balance. So we took a break, jumped on our Harley-Davidsons, and rode along the southern coast of Spain, discovering the town of Adra… and unexpectedly finding tequeños, which immediately made the trip worth it. ⚙️ GOBIUS C TANK SENSOR – TECHNICAL OVERVIEW The Gobius C is a non-invasive ultrasonic tank level sensor, designed specifically for marine environments where reliability and simplicity matter. Instead of installing probes or floats inside the tank, the Gobius C is mounted externally on the outside of the tank and uses ultrasonic technology to measure the liquid level through the tank wall. Key Features & Specs: Non-invasive installation – no drilling, no contact with liquids Ultrasonic sensing through plastic or fiberglass tanks Compatible with fresh water, grey water, and black water tanks NMEA 2000 compatible, integrating directly into modern marine networks Outputs real-time tank level data to chartplotters, MFDs, and monitoring systems Extremely reliable in sloshing conditions and under sail Zero maintenance, no moving parts On GOAT 2.0, the Gobius C sensors feed directly into our NMEA 2000 backbone, allowing us to see tank levels on our navigation displays and inside our Raspberry Pi / Signal K system. This is a massive upgrade over traditional float sensors, which are notorious for sticking, failing, or giving false readings. For a cruising catamaran, knowing exactly how much water you have left is not a luxury—it’s safety and autonomy. 🏍️ LIFE BEYOND THE BOAT After days of boat projects, we needed a change of pace. So we fired up the Harleys and rode along the stunning Andalusian coastline, ending up in Adra, a small coastal town with deep maritime roots and a relaxed, authentic vibe. And then came the surprise: tequeños. Crispy, cheesy, perfect fuel after a long ride. Sometimes the best discoveries happen when you’re not looking for them. IN THIS EPISODE: Installing Gobius C tank sensors on our Lagoon 400 Integrating tank data into NMEA 2000 & onboard systems Why non-invasive tank sensors make sense for cruisers Harley-Davidson ride along southern Spain Discovering Adra and unexpected comfort food FOLLOW OUR JOURNEY: Instagram Sailing & Tech: @sailing_svgoat Instagram Lifestyle: @nobodysride Facebook: Sailing SV GOAT
