In the morning I had noticed that she was looking a bit low in the water and following a quick look through the binoculars, it became evident that she was sinking. We turned on the VHF and did a broadcast on channel 72 which is monitored by the other yachts in Linton Bay. The first thing we had to find out was if anyone knew who the owner of ‘Faith’ is. It was evident that ‘Faith’ was unoccupied and no-one had details of the owner. I went to ‘Faith’ on the dinghy and was met by numerous other sailors turning up to help. Buckets, manual pumps, solar panels connected to car batteries and electric pumps were all being used. It took a while to empty out the incredible amount of water that had entered the boat and it was so nice that someone arrived with ice cold beers for everyone at the end. There are currently 4 wrecks in Linton Bay that are either completely or semi-submerged. Not only do they provide a navigational hazard, they are also obviously really bad for the environment, and are a real eyesore. It turned out that ‘Faith’ is owned by a local and they posted a message of thanks on Facebook when they heard what had happened. We are sailing "home"!! Little did we know that that would be what we would call Black Cay by the end... Buddy sailing through a rough patch, getting through Farmer's Cut, we make out way down south in the Exuma Sound. We get a big bite, but nearly loose it (her!) - though as any classy girl, she passed out after a couple of shots...- COVID starts to direct our actions, and freediving gives both boys and girls some much needed head space to cope with the mental strains of watching the world crumble. Home is where the heart is. Where the gratitude lies. Where friends are. Where your shelter protects. And we're learning that we are still close to "having it all". When you live on a sailboat, the worries and senses of not belonging anywhere can seem overwhelming at times, but at the same time, it's crazy that we can actually bring our home with us everywhere we go. After more than 4 weeks alone on the ship, sailing around in this very unique and amazing area, Raja Ampat, it's now necessary to get new supplies and provisioned almost everything. I'm completely out of vegetables, rice, pasta. etc. So Jovial has droped the moorings from Wayag, pulled up the anchor and set course for the small trading town named Waisai. I have been to Waisai once before and during that visit I have made a few good contacts that can help me in, out and around the area - and since there is still some uncertainty and concerns about corona, it is always good to have a friend or two. I kayaked the Hanford Reach on the Columbia River in my Lifetime Lancer 100. I was told by an expert canoeist that it would take 4 hours but that was a miscommunication because they thought that I was going to stop at the white bluffs and not go all the way to Richland, my trip took 9 hours (47 mi) and I didn't bring proper provisions. I got to see wildlife and desert scenery but I got sunburned and dehydrated. Always plan your own route and stops. It was a long trip. Watch my recap at the end for suggestions. 5 River Navigation, Radar, will describe how to use recreational marine radar sets for river navigation based on years of use on commercial vessels. It will cover history, types, adjustment and use as an aid to navigation and for collision avoidance.

And, once again, we have problems with the engine, well the gearbox actually. After Magnus had spent hours rebuilding it, it suddenly fills with water! Magnus attempts a MagGyver fix, but is it enough to get us back to Airlie Beach or will we be stranded out at the islands with no way of getting home? This is the final ‘engine’ straw. We make the monumental decision that it’s time for Issy to retire and we go about sourcing a ‘new’ engine for Nutshell. Something which will be reliable and keep us safe in the Kimberley. That's what I should have done. Treat sooner or suffer later. I had a nasty infection that I thought I could treat on my own, rather than go see a doctor. Well I waited too long and boy did I suffer. I'm still stuck in Mindelo Cape Verde. I cant's sail for a variety of reasons. Main one is that authorities wont allow yachts to sail around the islands. But that's alright because I'm in good company with my Canadian friends. We go and explore an extinct volcano. And the I have to go in for surgery due to a lingering infection. Sailing in the Med is a different prospect this year. The summer season has started but this year it's just for the locals and the live aboard cruisers. The holiday makers haven't come and the charter boats are still in their winter marinas. It's a unique opportunity and we often have anchorages all to ourselves. In this episode we sail from Ibiza to Mallorca, prime locations for sailing but the experience is more like visiting remote South Pacific islands than Balearic hotspots. We feel very lucky to be here, but we weren't so lucky with our dinghy. On the way to the remote islands of Cabrera we loose the dinghy and are now having to get provisions using the paddle board. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- You Tube are now putting mid -role adds on videos, but there is a way to see the current videos with no adds at all before they get released to the public. It's time to get a real feel for sailing on a performance catamaran in the size range we're looking at - between 42-45 ft. This week we find ourselves on something just slightly larger, a Dazcat 1495 named Hissy Fit. For our day on the water, we try to find out how we feel with the size of the living space, how the boat handles vs the monohulls we've been cruising on up to this point, and what we think of the motion of the boat under sail. Suffice to say, we're pretty smitten, and once again, very much looking forward to our catamaran build so that in a few years we'll be out cruising the waters just like this.
