He paused preparations to give us a deck tour of his Tradewind 35, Bernard. ‘I see it as a triangle, boat-body-mind,’ he says of getting ready to sail around the world solo, nonstop, and unassisted. ‘With the boat, I’m getting the vessel ready with all the spares and tools that could be usable. Body-wise, I’m doing sport preparation like any athlete. Mind, I’m doing psychological therapy, as well as mind preparation with a coach.’ Etienne didn’t start sailing until he was 21, when an ‘astonishing’ outing on a catamaran started his ‘quest for more wind and bigger waves.’ That journey led him to shearing sheep in the mountains. Then he worked as a deckhand in the Southern Ocean, and later refitted and cruised on a 34ft steel yacht called SOUNDSGOOD. In 2021, he won the inaugural Globe 5.80 transat on a Mini he hand-built from scratch. And is now taking part in the GGR on special invitation. He named his Barney coloured GGR boat for Bernard Stamm and Bernard Moitessier, a major inspiration. ‘Moitessier named his boat Joshua in tribute to Joshua Slocum. He didn’t finish his voyage back to England, so let’s finish it. 21-year-old Louis Kerdelhué comes from a sailing family and has a dinghy-racing background. He turned to yachting when he first heard about the ‘race for madmen’, and started preparing while he was still finishing his university degree. In 2023, he got his Yachtmaster Offshore and has been busy racking up solo miles since. He’s sailing a Biscay 36 Masthead sketch called IE Charge, previously known as Nuri. The boat was originally refit for the 2018 GGR, and went around with Michael Guggenberger in 2022/23. True to his nickname of ‘Last-minute Louis,’ we first saw the young skipper come (literally) crashing through the window once the farewell press conference was already underway. He was doing laps on the pontoons to get his ducks in a row until the last possible moment, before his equally fresh-faced friends hurrahed him off the mooring. During an electric outboard test, Editor Theo Stocker took this swirly video. The bubbles coming off the tips and forming a spiral are called cavitation. The pressure difference at the tip of the propeller is making the water boil. The pressure difference causes the water to heat up by lowering its boiling point. Whereas aeration causes the whirlpool effect. Theo filmed this on a camera at 50 frames per second. So, it looks like the propeller is going backwards. But this is an illusion.
