RSHYR 2025 | Of Double-Handers/Fully Crewed, Foils and Multihulls With the 80th Hobart run and celebrations of a small boat year still ringing in our ears, John Curnow of Sail-World and Crosbie Lorimer of Bow Caddy Media shared thoughts on how the race might evolve. Their chat ranges across divisions for fully-crewed and double-handers, the inevitability of foiling yachts in the race and the multihull community’s longstanding call to join the party. Bow Caddy Media also discussed the pluses and minuses of the double-hander/fully crewed divisions with to two very experienced ocean racers, while they were in Hobart. Ed Psaltis of Midnight Rambler discussed the fully crewed perspective, while Lincoln Dews of Toucan addressed the double-handers take. In this episode we get splashed but the Sardinian weather is holding us back, then we get reunited with our trusty buddy boat Tintomara and finally we find a weather window to continue our journey north along the the Sardinian coast. But while we were waiting for the wind to calm down we found ways to entertain ourselves. Anders has been at the sea most of his life and sailed for the Swedish national dingy sailing team as a young man. Gitte has also grown up with boats and spent every summer sailing with her father as a teenager. This trip marked a big milestone – my first proper solo sail on ARGO. I cast off from the marina completely on my own, sailed across to Stradbroke Island in Moreton Bay, dropped anchor in a beautiful spot, then made the return trip and solo berthed back in the marina. It was equal parts exciting, nerve-wracking, and hugely confidence building. While anchored, I made the most of the location and ticked off a few long-overdue boat jobs – tracking down a diesel leak in one of the fuel tanks, fibreglassing a cracked step for the first time, and building some new screens for the hatches. There’s still plenty on the list, but this felt like real progress. Solo sailing pushes you to slow down, think ahead, and trust what you’ve learned. This was a good reminder of just how far we, and ARGO, have come. Thanks for watching. First day of Summer & instead of early morning swims, he head straight for Kotor Marina to meet our electrician to complete the final touches on our water maker! Hughie gets on the job, Shane learns he made a mistake prior and I am humbled once again by the weight of the boat. Once done, we wander the streets of Kotor and get some street food. The following morning we leave the marina and drop anchor a stones throw away, where we plan to spend a few days enkoying what Kotor has to offer, we our three other boat buddies.

Mit unserer Topaz Magno geht’s noch einmal raus in die Kieler Bucht – direkt vor dem Olympiahafen Kiel-Schilksee. Bei 4 Beaufort und ablandigem Wind erleben wir ein richtig agiles kleines Sportboot. Die Magno ist mit nur ca. 3,94 m Länge, 1,56 m Breite und rund 95 kg Rumpfgewicht ein echtes Leichtgewicht. Das Großsegel ca. 8 m², die Fock rund 2 m² und der Gennaker ca. 10–11 m² machen die Jolle perfekt, um das Gennaker-Segeln zu üben – aber eben auch ziemlich kippelig. Das spüren wir sofort: die ersten Kenterungen lassen nicht lange auf sich warten. Insgesamt werden es 6 Kenterungen – jedes Mal schnell aufrichten, Wasser rausfahren und weiter geht’s. Genau das macht den Reiz aus: wenig Trägheit, direktes Lenkverhalten und jede kleine Gewichtsverlagerung spürt man sofort. Wenn die Magno ins Gleiten kommt, spielt die klassische Rumpfgeschwindigkeit von ca. 9 km/h keine Rolle mehr – mit Gennaker und genug Wind kommen wir zeitweise auf 16 km/h und mehr. Für Einsteiger ist die Magno aufgrund ihrer Stabilität beim Aufrichten perfekt zum Lernen geeignet – aber man muss aktiv segeln und Gewicht trimmen! Wir segeln Höhe, üben Wenden, fahren lange Schläge und probieren Manöver im Trapez. Dabei wechseln wir Rollen: mal steuert einer nur mit der Pinne, mal bedienen wir Großsegel und Fock gemeinsam.
