While strong winds and cold temperatures descend upon the Chesapeake Bay, I am still testing out my new Dynice Dux rigging. This involves a sail up to Cartegena Creek on the Potomac river and then back to Deltaville, a trip of approximately 90 miles. In preparation for the offshore hop south, I get my satellite subscription started with Predict Wind, and put the new Iridium GO unit through its paces. Finally I have a look at the current weather map and assess possible departure dates for the offshore run south to Florida, via the Bahamas. Closing up the holes in our boat | Episode 179 Recently we sailed to the boatyard to get hauled out here in Curacao. It’s been 2 years since we had Saoirse out of the water, so we got to work right away looking into things that needed to be fixed. But once we started digging, we actually found something we were not expecting. Water in our keel. Fast forward through a bunch of drilling, grinding and sanding and now we need to get to work on closing up these big holes in our hull. This is turning out to be one of the biggest projects we’ve ever done on this boat. It was an absolutely crazy few days in Annapolis where we had a small taste of what it would be like to be famous. People were queuing up for a signed hat, and we couldn't walk 5m down the road without being stopped. And we were among 30 other sailing channels at the show, so it was amazing to be part of such a huge event, and get to know some of the other sailing channels out there. Overall, the most humbling experience of my entire life. After 10 days of preparations, the transom is finally ready to get permanently bonded on. Well...this is the moment we'd been waiting for. There were a few more days of odd jobs before it was ready, especially considering that bulkhead 9 had never been bonded to the bridge deck. Sending little 'ole me down into the hulls again, we were able to get the correct spacing when the transom was in place, to bond it to the deck, and then raise it up the following day to glass that down. And then - the bonding of the transom!! We thought we were all pro's at this point, I mean, there'd probably been at least 25 dry fits already. But once the first batch of methacrylate was mixed and we had 40 minutes on the clock, things began to go downhill. Don't worry - it all worked out in the end. #124 ✍️Nous avons mis presque une heure à étirer notre gennak qui s’était accordéoné sur son bout anti-torsion d’emmagasineur. La réparation de sa faiblesse de la veille était dans l’absolu, simple ! Un morceau de sangle, quelques points bien serrés et le tour été joué ! C’était cependant en nous fiant à notre optimisme qui ne laissait que peu de doute sur les capacités de notre super machine à coudre. Déchue, sa réputation venait d’en prendre un coup et la voilerie du coin allait devoir nous trouver une solution ! Dans le registre raccommodage, nous devions aussi débrouiller quelques récalcitrants travaux, toujours remis au lendemain. Un cover d’annexe devenu indomptable, un hublot de pont incontinent ou encore des connectiques de moins en moins passant ! C’est la troisième ou quatrième fois que nous sommes victime de cette gêne électrique. Au même moment, tous nos câbles se recouvrent de vert de gris, faisant grincer le peu de dents qui restent à mon Tchoupi. Entre nos nombreuses occupations, nous avons le plaisir de rencontrer en chair et en os de nouveaux followers, tous aussi attachants les uns que les autres. Des destins qui se croisent, des vies différentes, des rêves naissants et le bonheur de les entendre nous dire que nos vidéos les font rêver. Jusqu’il y a peu de temps, nous n’avions pas totalement conscience de l’impact de nos partages. Aujourd’hui, nous nous sentons chanceux de réunir autant de Bananas, comme nous aimons les appeler, aussi bienveillantes, qu’attentionnées. Malgré tout cet Amour, nous n’arrivons pas à rester indifférents au très faible pourcentage d’aigris de la vie, qui arrivent, juste en quelques mots acides, à nous faire presque regretter de partager ! Passée l’âpre lecture de leurs messages venimeux, notre envie d’échange se fait plus forte et nous nous reconcentrons sur ce que nous aimons faire… essayé d’apporter du bonheur ! Pour arriver à notre fin, nous misons sur plusieurs facteurs importants à nos yeux : rester nous, continuer à nous amuser et avoir du plaisir à partager. Tous les ingrédients y sont pour qu’en coulisse, mon capitaine émancipe toute sa sensibilité dans l’assemblage de millier d’heures de rushs. Chacun est choisi, coupé, aligné, rogné pour être soigneusement accompagné du fond sonore qui lui correspond. Des heures de montage pour donner et faire plaisir… La météo annonce 15-20 nœuds de vent sud-ouest dans la journée, pile dans notre direction. Le schéma classique dans les parages. Pas la peine de se faire malmener au près. Là, le but n’est pas vraiment de naviguer pour visiter, juste de nous rendre à un mouillage plus commode pour les prochains jours. En partant tôt de Fort de France aux moteurs, nous serons à Sainte Anne juste avant que la houle n’ait eu le temps de se lever. Libérée…Délivrée… Je suis enfin débarrassée… Ça y est, l’opération s’est bien passée. Une petite convalescence de 10 jours et nous pourrons enfin continuer notre aventure ! Nous allons pouvoir repartir serein côté santé. Après tous nos déboires depuis Trinidad, nous avons été contactés par Medidistance. Généreusement, cette association pour la préparation au grand voyage a remédié à notre négligence. Sur ce second tour du monde, nous avions un peu bâclé l’obligation si importante d’être bien équipés à bord d’une vraie pharmacie océanique. Un Grand merci … Mon capitaine n’en peut plus d’attendre, son félin est prêt, lui aussi. Il tourne en rond, mais il va pouvoir se changer les idées. La Transat Jacques Vabres arrive ! Une première pour nous. Dans la baie des flamands, ça s’active ! Des chapiteaux sont implantés, des pontons installés et des bouées d’amarrages fixés. Les coureurs sont suivis sur internet. Le premier est arrivé de nuit, nous ne l’avons pas vu, puis deux autres et c’est au tour de Gitana ! Magnifique de beauté. Premier dans sa catégorie ! Race 2 of the annual Narrows Series, the Portaferry Town Regatta, got under way with 8 to 12 knots of breeze from the SSE. The race committee set a long course with two windward leewards to allow the boats in IRC 1 enough time to sort our positions in the lough and allow for the tide to turn and help the boats race back up the narrows to the traditional finish off the club house. A spinnaker start on the in rushing tide saw the fleet stay close on the run down to mark 9, before positions settled down on the first beat. Animal the visiting boat from Scotland showed great down wind speed to lead at the first mark, briefly giving up the lead to GTR on the second kite run. While the race for line honours was close the handicap result was never in doubt with Animal show the local boats how things are done. With a 1 & 2 after two races it will take a change in fortunes for the local IRC 1 crews to have any chance of taking the series on day 3 of the regatta. As the wind picks up sailing becomes very tricky if your rudder is not set up perfectly. Check your rudder and tiller for any wobble. Make sure the rudder stays completely down and nothing is inhibiting smooth steering.

In this episode we are once again off to explore the amazing Bocas Del Toro Archipelago. We make our way towards Zapatilla Cay, an area known for its remote tropical island feel as well as jungle hikes. Chart data in Panama isn't always detailed and we struggle without a functioning depth sounder. We run through a narrow pass between cays using Navionics Sonar Charts. The Zapatilla Cays do not disappoint, we are greeted by a pod of dolphins as we set the hook. Temperatures are on the rise so we waste no time jumping in the water for a dive. There is an abundance of life and color under the surface. After diving we meet our friends on the beach for sundowners.
