It can never be as easy as splashing the boat and sailing I thought as Chris displayed what was left of our rudder post. Fortunately, this atrocity was not on Avocet’s rudder, but rather our Victory 21, Geronimo, that we were getting ready for the 69th annual High Sierra Regatta. Having done a few projects aboard the year prior, we thought all we needed to do was burnish the bottom and be on our way but of course the universe couldn’t let us get away with it that easily. The race weekend went by in a blink but was full of fun and memories. We don’t know exactly where Avocet will be in July of 2023, but we do know that Chris and I will be sailing Geronimo alongside the rest of the Victory fleet in the 70th annual High Sierra Regatta! This time on Sailing Intermission we stayed near Savannah to wait for Hurricane Ian to pass. We were very lucky as the storm went around us and sent only some wind and rain our way. When the hurricane was a day away we thought about racing ahead to Charleston. It made a certain amount of sense to do that at the time. We are glad we decided to stay put in Savannah instead. Our hearts go out to those who were impacted by the storm, it was horribly destructive. Except for a loose connection where the exhaust riser meets the engine, our diesel Cummins 4BT-3.9M received a clean bill of health from the mechanic. Steve wrapped exhaust tape around the connection and secured the tape with a hose clamp. Now, it’s good to go! With the delays of waiting for a mechanic and staying put during the storm, we decided we will go south and leave Isabella in a safe harbor while we travel to the Annapolis Sailboat Show. Kate was a junior sailor in Opti's and 420's while Curtis went cruising in the Great Lakes with his family. We met while sailing in a Melges 24 regatta and have been sailing together ever since. The first time we went cruising together as a couple was on a friends borrowed J Boats J 105 in the North Channel of Lake Huron and Canada (part of the Great Loop). Those few weeks, and watching other channels like Gone With the Wynns, Sailing Uma, Project Atticus, Delos, Nahoa, and Sailing La Vagabonde, convinced us that the sailing life was for us. We bought our boat, a J Boats J/46, in 2019 after spending years searching for the perfect bluewater sailboat to sail around the world. We were interested in a catamaran and monohulls, but loved the performance cruising design of the J(it is faster than most cruising catamarans). We spent six months refitting her in Rhode Island, before selling our house and cars, quitting our jobs, and leaving land life for good to become digital nomads, with the goal of sailing around the world via Cape Horn. We have since navigated over 12,000 miles together, through storms, big waves, pandemics, and lockdowns. We sailed to Maine, the Bahamas, the Caribbean, Grenada, Sint Maarten, the Azores, Canary Islands, and Brazil, on our way south to Uruguay, Argentina, and Chile to sail around Cape Horn and into the Patagonia fjords. We never intended to become influencers or start a new YouTube sailing channel, but now it is what we do. We love sharing our experience and adventures with you. We have learned to fly the drone and edit videos, trying to produce relaxing and listenable videos for you to sail away and watch at home while having coffee on Sunday mornings.

We were again kindly invited to join the crew of "Exocete" (Jod35) in Angra do Heroísmo, on the Island of Terceira, in the Azores. The Regatta was held on the 1st of October and there were 18 participants. There were southerly winds of 7 to 16 knots and a rather uncomfortable sea state. Another great day on the water 🌊

J’ai même eu le droit avant de quitter la Guadeloupe de m’équiper d’une superbe gazinière, dernier cri, pour mes recettes de Jacouille ! C’est ainsi que, gratifié de tout notre amour, notre fier navire, au petit matin rosé de ce lundi, été parait à appareiller. Et je vais vous dire qu’après toutes nos dernières péripéties, nous n’allions pas faire les difficiles côté météo ! Nous allons devoir nous accommoder des influences Sud de la dépression qui passe plus nord. Du près, faut le faire ! Alors que l’orientation quasi constante est du Nord-est ! Néanmoins, nous avons un tel besoin de naviguer que cette tendance n’arrive même pas à nous contrarier. Nous inhalons par grosses bouffées les embruns iodés. Blacky exalte, mon capitaine revit, je me sens soulagée. Et les milles s’amenuisent encore entre Jonathan et nous. Il quitte Kourou dans deux jours, J-9. Nous nous sommes avancés jusqu’aux Saintes, pris une bouée dans le calme, pour la nuit. Ces coffres nous désespèrent ! Mais qui donc les a réalisées ? Dans la passe, ils génèrent de fortes turbulences qu’il faut prendre au sérieux pour ne pas être surpris par la dérive. IN THIS VIDEO Join us as we check something of our bucket list and sail the Delmarva! Our adventure took us about 9 days to complete, and we learned a ton along the way. The Delmarva includes a loop including the Chesapeake Bay, Chesapeake and Delaware Canal, Delaware Bay, and 150 miles of Atlantic Ocean. ABOUT FUTURE OUR PERFORMANCE CATAMARAN: We fell in love with the Balance 482 - it's a perfect size for a cruising couple to handle and is a great "balance" of performance and comfort. One of our favorite features is the excellent ventilation since we mostly live as "hookers" (aka at anchor) where the boat automatically turns into the wind so we stay cool and we don't need to battle mold. We also have starlink for easy off-grid life. Our 2400 watt solar panel array also means we rarely need to run an engine to charge our batteries. ABOUT US: We saved for a our future boat, Sold Everything that we owned, Shipped the rest in a container to Cape Town, South Africa, flew to Cape Town, South Africa airport, to explore South Africa including an amazing safari, touring around Cape Town, move onto a Balance 482 Catamaran, then sailed to St Helena, Ascension Island, Fernando de Naronha, Brazil, Martinique, Sint Maarten (Dutch and French), St. Croix, St. John, St. Thomas, Inagua, Crooked Island, Long Island, George Town, Staniel Cay, Eleuthera, Anegada, Bahamas, Cape Canaveral, St. Augustine Florida, USA, Matthews Virigina, Zimmerman's marine for a haul out, and more! Both Dennis and Ann grew up military brats with Army fathers. Dennis (the Colonel) served 30 years in the US Army and his retirement pension helped us retire in our 50s. With the weather forecasting Bora winds from the north we moved the yacht to a more protected anchorage in the waters of Kaštel Gomilica. When the winds passed we decided to sail to a new bay, heading away from Split and towards the nearby town of Trogir. We ended up settling in a quiet anchorage outside of Marina, coincidentally where the Croatian fleet of Sunsail Leopard catamarans are based. Well that how this week kinda went. We had a pretty rough start to the week and were feeling a bit defeated. The jobs kept creeping up like quicksand and we forgot that sometimes you need to be still for a second to get your head above water. We checked off some of the jobs that were nagging but not dire and it really boosted crew morale. Sometimes changing the little things can make a very large difference. Like a fried egg for instance 🍳 And that pocket $5 really shone when we received our new dinghy from Air-Sea Safety & Survival. They really went above and beyond to fix a mix-up. 💯 We have to remember that we can’t let the work rule us, we need to take some time to step back and enjoy the big picture.
