Being in Trinidad right now, there is an element of watching the news and keeping abreast of geopolitical events, due to the tension between the United States, Venezuela and Trinidad. From up our mast we can see Venezuela, so it's much closer than many around the world may realise. Hurricane season is the busiest time of year for shipyards across the Caribbean, and Trinidad is no different! At Peake Yacht Services the yard has been a hive of activity, as yacht owners return to their sailing homes and launch for another season of adventures out on the water. For the boats behind us, that time had arrived, meaning our Leopard 45 catamaran needed to be lifted and moved out the way. It's a project we started because the old rear cockpit table was yet another Leopard Catamarans / Robertson & Caine warranty fail, and the upstairs one had a design that could easily be improved to more functional in our daily lives as full-time liveaboard sailors. In this episode, straight from the hardstand in Trinidad, we get to vacuum bagging sections of the table. It's a new process to us, involving a variety of vacuum bagging supplies such as peel ply, sealant tape, bagging film, breather fabric, mold release, resin tubes and a vacuum pump, all to ensure the vacuum bagging process goes smoothly. The goal to infuse West Systems epoxy resin into the carbon fiber to create DIY catamaran tables that are strong, functional and light. In this video, we’re taking on a whole new boat project, as we start to build custom carbon fiber tables for our catamaran. After a break while Telicia flew home to Australia to visit family (first time in 4 years!) we're back sharing more of life aboard our sailing catamaran, SV Liger! Built in Trinidad by the American military, it's spread across two levels cut into the top of the hillside. The higher level has the ruins of an immense dish, while the lower section is a huge, abandoned building complex. As an abandoned military station, it makes for some unique urban exploring. If you're in Trinidad and want to check out the Tracking Station it's best to do it sooner rather than later! Even since this video was filmed more of the main roof has collapsed, and we suspect the dish itself may not have many years left. To celebrate reaching 15K, this video is available to everyone for the first time! During Carnival the streets of Marigot came alive with the colour, rhythm, and energetic vibe of the Caribbean. It was an opportunity for me to explore more Caribbean culture, enjoying the colorful Carnival parade. Having spent Carnival in Trinidad last year, experiencing it St Martin was something new, with it's own traditions and Caribbean Carnival history. The parade was an impressive display of energy, with King Momo, moko jumbie stilt walkers, whip cracking, drumming and costumed troupes, who performed their carnival dance moves along the route. The day ended at Galisbay Carnival Village, with a live music concert featuring local and international acts, and fire breathers! Having a medical emergency aboard is something no liveaboard cruiser wants happening on their boat, so when it impacted our catamaran we were lucky to be in the shipyard in Trinidad. What seemed to just be a sore limb was actually a life threatening medical condition that needed to be urgently addressed. The hurricane season is a time where many liveaboard cruisers in the Caribbean region choose to lift their boats out, storing them safely on land. As we travel around the world we always love finding abandoned places to urban explore. After sailing into Trinidad & Tobago, we cleared into the country then motored our live aboard catamaran to the uninhabited island of Chacachacare. One of Trinidad's western islands, it's a great anchorage for visiting yachts. It's also a formed leper colony. Despite being to Trinidad before we'd never explored the abandoned building including the convent and church, which were used by the nuns who cared for the lepers that lived here. This was the perfect time to go see a place some call haunted, the ruins of which are slowly being overtaken by the jungle. The first time we arrived in Trinidad we thought it would be for 3 months... 21 months and more warranty repairs and mistakes than we ever could have imagined, our Leopard 45 relaunched. Now, it's time to go back!
