We left the Long Island sound and sailed back to Manhattan through the East River. The sun was setting behind the New York City skyline when we reached the city so we were treated to the most amazing views. Because of a security zone in the western channel we were escorted by a coast guard vessel while passing by the UN building. We woke up in NYC, where we were anchored behind Ellis Island. Waking up there was an extraordinary experience. We had a relatively quiet night but during the day there is too much traffic here to be comfortable on anchor so we prepared to continue our journey north. We were on our way from Cape Canaveral to Beaufort, 470 miles further up the coast. We decided to sail directly there without stopping, which would take us 4 days. Beaufort is the last place to stop before cape Hateras, so we would wait there for a weather window to sail around the cape and straight to New York from there. A 16 hour long sailing trip to get to Cape Canaveral in time to watch the Falcon 9 rocket launch from our boat. Soon after we left The Bahamas we could spot the Miami skyscrapers. We were thrilled to see the first glimpse of the US mainland, we had been looking forward to this for a long time. While sailing in The Bahamas we spotted something bright orange in the water, we checked it out with the binoculars and it seemed to be an orange lifebuoy. We furled in our gib and headed over to the buoy to see if anyone was in danger. We couldn't spot anyone in the surroundings so we decided to pick up the buoy out of the water, this was be a good man over board exercise for us. But then it went very wrong? It has always been the kids dream to play on a sandbank. And we finally found a small but gorgeous one here in this wonderful bay in Turks and Caicos. An extraordinary experience in the most beautiful anchorage we have ever seen. Being anchored in this place is how I dreamed sailing life would be. A quiet place with tropical blue water, endless white beaches, dolphins swimming around the boat in the morning, beautiful snorkeling reefs and sunshine. While we were on our way to the sandbank two dolphins approached us and kept swimming around the dinghy so we decided to get in the water. The little one was very curious and came really close.
