After months of living and sailing on our boat, we left Santana behind in the marina and traded ocean waves for winding roads—setting off on a three-week Morocco road trip with our two dogs. Crossing the Strait of Gibraltar by sailboat is a milestone for many sailors—and now, it is our turn. After sailing from Al Hoceima to Ceuta putting us right at the entrance of the Straight, we chose a narrow weather window and motored across one of the world’s most infamous stretches of water. With orca sailboat attacks just a couple of days old and the unpredictable strong currents in the Straight of Gibraltar, we stayed alert and hoped we’d made the right call. I had written Ibiza off—too touristy, too loud, too crowded. But this stop reminded me how important it is to let go of assumptions. Sailing into Ibiza in the off-season, I found quiet corners, golden light, and a slower rhythm that made me see the island in a whole new way. In this episode of Untie The Lines, we explore the ancient streets of Ibiza Old Town (Dalt Vila), pass through the impressive gates near the marina in Santa Eulalia, and hike out to the mystical Es Vedrà rock—also known as the Eye of Es Vedrà. After sailing over from mainland Spain, we’re now sailing the Balearic Islands, soaking up the beauty of nature and enjoying a bit of solitude at anchor at this unplanned surprise stop over on a tiny island. With no wind and cold, still conditions, we relied mostly on the engine—so Floh gave our Volvo Penta a thorough check before departure. Wrapped in woolly hats and blankets, we settled into the rhythm of a quiet passage, keeping things moving with snacks, small chores, music, and laughter. But mid-passage, we noticed strange movement in the boom. The calm conditions had caused the sail to flop back and forth, shaking a few rivets loose in our in-boom furling system. Thankfully, Floh managed a clever DIY boom repair while underway, getting the sail functional again just in time for some actual wind. In the final stretch, Santana finally spread her wings, sailing beautifully through the Med.
