Mist's refit continues. The small jobs are never small and the larger jobs are epic. This episode we work out what holds the anchor to the boat, finish off the engine mount replacement with a lick of paint, explain what we are up to in a safety theory and take on the servicing of the Blakes Seacocks. Mist's launch date was given to us the day we were putting this episode together. We are now up against it to get everything done, but at least we know when we will be back enjoying the water again.

I sailed several widely different boats during my few weeks in Barbados. A 39ft cruising catamaran, a 26ft open deck racing catamaran, a 100ft schooner and finally a 46ft trimaran "Oceans Tribute". I cannot really call it a "racing" trimaran, as it was sailed 16000 miles to Barbados singlehanded(!) from Australia, by Guy Chester. But it was easily the fastest boat in Barbados for the week it was here. Guy has now sailed on to other islands as he is competing in all the different Caribbean regattas. There were 6 of us on board, from 5 different countries! No one had sailed with Guy before, and obviously only Guy had sailed the boat, so it was a big learning experience for everyone. And that meant it was too stressful and hectic to make any normal videos. Fortunately Bajan sailor Marianna was able to get some clips on her phone and then, amazingly, upload them before we were back on the mooring. We had four too-short practice races before the main event - the Round Barbados race. This is a similar length (roughly 60 miles) to the UK's Round the Island race but without the tidal considerations, although outlying reefs meant we kept further offshore than one would in the RtI, where keeping out of the tide by sailing along the 10ft contour is the norm. Sailing clockwise round meant starting with a fast, flat water, close reach, then a short beat round the north end to what we hoped would be a fast broad reach down the east of island. But the wind had other ideas and it was another close reach until we got to East Point and could bear off and hoist the screecher. Swells and winds up to 24 knots true made it a bit marginal for an asymmetric spinnaker. Even so, top speed was 24 knots, and 16 knots to windward which made it a wet boat in the trade wind waves! The heading photo shows us crossing the finish line, just over 5 hours from the start and about 65 nautical miles sailed. Overall I was very impressed with the design and build, it's a great credit to Lock Crowther who designed it over 30 years ago. When Guy left for Antigua he said "see you in 2024 for the Fastnet Race", so I hope he makes good on that promise, as it will be interesting to see how he matches up against European competition.

Pour vivre pleinement, intimement convaincus d’être dans notre raison. Mais avons-nous vraiment était dans le moule ? Nous avons, je crois, à un moment donné, essayé d’y entrer. L’occurrence en a décidé autrement et c’est certainement en partie grâce à elle que nous en sommes là aujourd’hui. De fait, nos caractères plutôt marginaux ont forcément aussi bien aidé. Cependant, malgré cela, avant de sauter le pas, nous avons douté et nous sommes posés des milliers de questions comme nos apprentis marins, aujourd’hui avec nous en initiation. Quelles soient percutantes, pertinentes, curieuses ou originales, toutes les questions ont un sens lors d’un tel changement de vie. Vouloir tout quitter pour l’aventure n’est pas anodin et pas sans conséquences et c’est bien pour cela que tant de rêves sont aussi, à regret, ou pas, avortés. Outres les questions techniques sur le bateau, il y a toutes celles qui amènent à la mise en place du projet. Comment l’aborder, comment le financer, dans combien de temps le réaliser, pour combien de temps ? Et celles plus orientées sur le bien-être de chacun, couple, enfants… Quitter la famille, les amis… Une fois cette étape passée, commence alors les questions plus ciblées sur la navigation, la vie à bord, le voyage… Puis, progressivement, tout se met en place, chacun trouve son rôle, les idées sont moins confuses et le rêve prend forme petit à petit.

In last week's post we showed how we made carbon fibre chainplates for Paikea. The chainplate arrangement was originally a stainless steel strap with a backing plate bolted through the bulkhead. The bulkhead was a eglass/plywood construction that had lasted more than 30 years but now the plywood core had rotted away and only the glass was left to hold the chainplates in place. As a result, the bolts were slowly moving upwards towards the deck and allowing the chainplate move upwards also. We ended up sailing around to the south side of St. John and spent several days in Salt Pond Bay. There was so much to do there and we could have spent more time exploring, but we had to get moving as a weather window approaches that will allow us to sail on to St. Martin. After have some awesome dives catching crayfish at Robe we head to Beachport for the night, before sailing into Port Macdonnell. Along the way we pass through several kelp forests, dodge countless cray pots and get buzzed by a low flying RAAF Orion plane. The shallow bay facing the southern ocean swells creates a dangerous entry, and after picking our path we surf a few waves before we get picked up by a larger breaking wave and end up surfing in at 21 KNOTS! We understand why we are the only sailing boat in the harbour. Clearances en Martinique, astuces ponton & plongées. Après deux semaines passées au Marin, nous partons vers les anses d'Arlet. Nous pensions y rester une semaine nous y sommes resté 15 jours. À partir d'Arlet Bourg une randonnée à travers la forêt permet de rejoindre Grande Anse en une heure. Un retour à pieds est possible par la route en 30 minutes. Avec Olivier et Christophe mes deux comparses de plongée nous avons exploré 2 épaves, la Lady V et le Yoyo à Schoelcher (16m), fait une plongée dérivante au Cap Salomon (32m), visité le sec du diamant (40m) et le rocher du diamant (40m). Après un mois en Martinique nous partons pour Sainte Lucie.
