I left the beautiful island of Makatea at sunset, threw the spinnaker up, and was ready for a peaceful 36 hour downwind sail. The boat had other plans. At midnight, the spinnaker halyard chafed and the sock got stuck. At 5:30 am, I did a routine check, only to find the boat flooded with saltwater. When I chose to sail across the Pacific Ocean, I had quite a few concerns as well as some hopes for this crossing. Sailing, for even a couple of days, can get old and exhausting quickly, especially when the weather is bad and things break. Before this sail, I hoped for one day that I would be 'becalmed'; this would give me the chance to reset, fix things, cook a few meals, clean, and simply rest and sit in the moment. While I wasn't becalmed on this passage, I came close to it; it was my favorite day. OH! and I crossed the equator!!
