Pour cette édition 2023, du côté des régatiers, on a compté 6 participants pour la classe CSA1, 5 pour les catégories CSA2 et 3 et enfin 6 engagés parmi les Diam 24. Cette flotte monotype est si active à Saint-Martin - avec une concentration on ne peut plus dynamique à Philipsburg – que nous lui consacrerons prochainement un article complet. Visiblement, rien ne semble freiner l’enthousiasme des organisateurs et des participants – même la pandémie mondiale du Covid-19 n’a pas provoqué l’annulation d’une édition. Le Caribbean Multihull Challenge, du haut de ses 5 ans, a déjà gagné en maturité et ne cesse de développer de nouveaux concepts. Cette année, le CMC a proposé le record du tour de Saba au départ de Simpson Bay. Ce parcours de 52 milles baptisé Around Saba Dash a été remporté par Fujin, le 53 pieds aux drôles d’étraves « babouche » de Greg Slyngstad. Le bolide n’a fait qu’une bouchée du Gunboat 60 Cui Bono, relégué à une heure. Le premier temps établi de ce record est donc de 3h, 21m et 35s. De l’avis de tous les marins locaux, ce timing infernal sera difficile à dépasser… ce qui ne manque pas d’amuser le skipper : « le record de Fujin tiendra jusqu’à ce qu’un MOD70 revienne sur le circuit ! ». Alors que le vent réel n’a pas dépassé 22 nœuds, le Bieker 53 est parvenu à atteindre 25 nœuds. Une vitesse impressionnante pour un cruiser-racer – mais on est encore du top speed de 32 nœuds de ce catamaran tout carbone… Le troisième jour de course s’est révélé le plus musclé avec des rafales supérieures à 30 nœuds. Dans ces conditions, les Diam 24 ont été priés de rester au mouillage… L’édition 2023 a vu également la naissance d’une division rallye – en plus de la course. Cette flottille devient itinérante avec des escales séduisantes à Anse Marcel et sur l’île voisine d’Anguilla et des animations à terre. Cette flotte rallye a rassemblé 12 multicoques – 11 catamarans et 1 trimaran. The Spanish built some incredible forts around the shore which we spend the afternoon exploring. In 2018 until we decided to focus on our project sailing TELLUS (Latin word meaning “Earth”). We had the chance to visit and live in many beautiful countries with our previous jobs, that made us realize how fast the world is changing and how fast the life is going and there is no “later” than “now” for the project we have in mind. In November 2022 we arrived in Canaries Island then sailed to Cape Verde. On 19 December 2022 we set sail to cross the Atlantic Ocean from Cape Verde to Martinique in the Caribbean. After 13 days and 4 hours. We have reached Martinique and currently sailing in the Caribbean islands. We have sailed over 10000 NM so far with our catamaran Tellus. The Adams 10 owners and sailors are a self-deprecating bunch that cheerfully point out the cost effectiveness their chosen boat, happily chiding each other about whose is the oldest and what particular original fitting has been discarded in the name of holding their own on the course. But don’t be fooled, this is a highly competitive mob that enjoys some very close racing in boats of all ages, as was on show for the last day of the Adams X Nationals hosted by the RPAYC for three days last week. After two days of gusty and exhausting westerlies, the light easterly on the final day of racing was very welcome for the ten crews, once it had settled down. Tom Braidwood and Jason Akers’s ‘Backchat’ had an almost unassailable lead going into the last day and was eventually able to ‘stay out of everyone’s way’ by trailing the fleet for the last race. As if to emphasise the owners’ insistence that even the oldest boats can be competitive, Garry Gudmunsons’ ‘Organised Chaos’ took out second place in his 1980 vintage boat, while Allen Stormon had to settle for third place with ‘Gezzabelle’ after a late bid for a second place fell just short. Usciti dal lavoro in fretta e furia, andiamo alla stazione per prendere il treno diretto ad Ancona, dove alla sera alle 21 partirà il traghetto in direzione Spalato. L'indomani dalla Marina di Kremik salperemo alla volta di Vis e poi Lastovo dove faremo le pratiche d'uscita dalla Capitaneria di porto Croata. Il giorno successivo, fatta l'uscita formale in Polizia, attraversiamo in direzione Vieste dove un bel vento ci fa viaggiare a vela con il code 0 per quasi tutta l'attraversata. Atterriamo a Vieste nel tardo pomerggio e li ci fermeremo un giorno per visitare la città. La tappa successiva ci vedrà entrare a Monopoli in notturna dopo 82 miglia a vela tra bonacce e punte di 25 nodi. Da Monopoli salperemo alla volta di Brindisi dove con una macchina a noleggio visiteremo la splendida Puglia e rientreremo a Mantova per una settimana di lavoro.
