Today's weather was very CALM. We ran the crew overboard drill - the Quick Stop Method - using the motor because there was no wind! Our instructors in the morning were Mark and Steve, and in the afternoon, Mark and Trevor!

In this video we travel west to Lake Wellington once more to visit the Avon and Perry Rivers. The Perry River is a pretty place with the Avon-Perry Delta Gippsland Lakes Reserve along much of its eastern shore. We sail upstream until the depth and width of the river turns us around. On the way downstream we find a beautiful grassed area under majestic gum trees. The rushes allow for up to 2 boats to nose in with a soft mud bottom. As a bonus you can step of the front of the boat onto the grass.... no ladder needed. Beautiful area with room for a campfire and extensive walks though the reserve. After taking extensive drone footage of the area we head out of the Perry and up the Avon. A much larger river but very scenic with plenty of bird life. Along the eastern shores is the Avon-Perry free camping area with a small boat ramp and several fishing platforms. A few potential landing spots but care is needed as many sections are rock lined. With a strong SW change on the way for the following day, we decide to cross back across the shallow Lake Wellington before heading back to Metung the next day.

► The event is fast becoming a classic for multihull fans - and so much the better! Conceived in 2019 by the enthusiastic, 82-year-old American Stephen Burzon, the regatta is organized by the St. Maarten Yacht Club in February – this year’s event having just taken place, from February 4 to 6. For the 2023 edition, on the racing, there were 6 entrants in the CSA1 class, 5 in the CSA2 and 3 categories and finally 6 participants among the Diam 24s. This one-design fleet is so active in Sint Maarten - with a very dynamic concentration in Philipsburg - that we’ll be devoting a complete article to it very soon. Clearly, nothing can slow the enthusiasm of the organizers and participants - even the worldwide Covid-19 pandemic didn’t cause the event to be canceled. The Caribbean Multihull Challenge, now in its fifth year, has already matured and continues to develop new concepts. This year, the CMC proposed the Around Saba record starting from Simpson Bay. This 52-mile race, called the Around Saba Dash, was won by Fujin, Greg Slyngstad's 53-foot boat with curiously shaped bows. The catamaran made short work of beating the Gunboat 60 Cui Bono, coming in one hour behind. The first established time for this record is therefore 3 hours, 21 minutes and 35 seconds. In the opinion of all the local sailors, this extraordinary time will be difficult to beat... a fact that doesn’t fail to amuse the skipper: “Fujin's record will stand until we see an MOD70 back on the circuit!” Although the true wind never exceeded 22 knots, the Bieker 53 managed to reach 25 knots. An impressive speed for a cruiser-racer - but still a long way from this all-carbon catamaran’s best top speed of 32 knots... The third day’s racing proved to be the most muscular with gusts over 30 knots. In these conditions, the Diam 24s were asked to stay at anchor... The 2023 edition also saw the birth of a rally division - in addition to the race. This fleet became itinerant, with attractive stopovers made in Anse Marcel, on the French side of St. Martin, and on the neighboring island of Anguilla with festivities organized ashore. The rally fleet saw 12 multihulls come together - 11 catamarans and 1 trimaran. Among the former, no less than 6 Balance catamarans were present. This Lagoon 440 with fly bridge is a fine example of a well-equipped, well-maintained and well-updated cruising catamaran. Her current owners have lovingly maintained her and it shows. The ample cockpit, shaded by the fibreglass hardtop, features a wetbar, and a table with a wraparound sofa. Another great place to relax is the fore deck with brand new trampolines and the wide recessed settee. And let’s not forget of course the fly bridge. All sail-handling lines lead to the bridge and obviously, the skipper has complete visibility in all directions. This cat is very well equipped with a main sail and a furling genoa from 2018, a lazy bag from 2019, two Yanmar diesel engines of 54 hp each, a generator, solar panels, a water maker, a washing machine, complete navigation package including radar, and a life raft for 12 persons. All exterior cushions have been renewed in 2021, as well as the sun shades for the cockpit and the sun screens for all windows. Furthermore, equipped with a: full cockpit enclosure, a bimini from 2019, and a new tender from 2022. Once you step through the sliding door into the saloon of this Lagoon 440 you’ll instantly feel at home. The saloon is surrounded by large windows and features a curved settee with excellent storage underneath. The chart table is strategically positioned forward, and the galley with large work top is located to starboard. Both hulls are identically fitted out and feature two cabins with an ensuite head with shower faucet. The matrasses in all 4 cabins have been renewed in 2021. If you are looking for a well-equipped and comfortable family cruising yacht then this Lagoon might be the one for you. “Easy sailing & comfortably cruising” This catamaran has been sold. In this episode, Andy from "Sailing Sole" YouTube Channel fame and David from SV Riff Raff crew on a voyage from Ensenada, Mexico to San Pedro, California. The voyage is typically a bash with motor sailing against wind and waves for almost 160 nautical miles. Thanks to an amazing crew, we manage to complete our mission within our weather window and successfully got in front of an upcoming gale warning. Reflections/Lessons Learned from this passage: 1/ v-drive fluid leak was manageable (yes, the NEW v-drive). had to add a little in san diego. 2/ engine stalled at san diego light. suspect crud in tank temporarily blocked pickup tube. racor was dirty. i'm thinking polish fuel and have tank cleaned. 3/ VHF distress randomly activated but I quickly alerted coast guard to disregard. could not deactivate. new standard horizon GX2400B with RAM4X remote on order. 4/ main headboard shackle caught up on topping lift. no idea how other than topping lift was flying a little loose. drama inside of LA harbor trying to get main down. 5/ night approaches are a b*tch when you are tired. LA harbor is particularly difficult relative to San Diego and Ensenada (my opinion, but others may disagree). 6/ should have gone with Beta 50 for repower. Beta 35 adequate but extra HP would have been welcome on 15+kt headwinds. 7/ DC charger pulled 85A when I first started engine at 1600 RPM. Impressed, but not sure how much of that was coming from alternator vs. pull from the starting battery. Could not do a long-poll charge test because batteries were topped. only shut down engine for 1 hour of sailing and separate 1 hour of layover at san diego CBP dock. 8/ everything is more manageable and more fun when you have an awesome, competent crew!

In this episode I finally make it to warmer waters! I've sailed 800 NM and make across the Georgia boarder and into Florida on my sailboat all the way from Canada!

Some great sailing this time from San Andres to Bocas del Toro in Panama. BE FREE is flying over the Caribbean in choppy waves and my new friend onboard is enjoying this fast sailing. We found a good weather window sending us the fast track south to Panama again where we first make a short stop in Bocas before continuing to Shelter Bay in the Colon district. I'm also doing a quick service on my generator before setting sail. As expected the wind dies out when getting close to Bocas but this time we had stronger winds than normal in this region making it into a very fast and fun sail. Entering Panamanian waters dolphins in numbers came to welcome us. This is part of my test sail after all the problems I have had from the last time I did the exact same route. This time with absolutely amazing weather and a happy feeling that things work as they should after major upgrades and repairs that once again delayed my transit through the Panama canal. We met in the summer 2015, we were introduced to each other by the virtual world. Eighteen months later we were getting married on a beautiful beach on Barbados, bare foot, very simple ceremony just like a dream! Two days after the wedding laying on the beach, talking about sailing, Carla suggested... why don't we sail around the world? Guess what Simon said? "Let's do it" He took it with no second thoughts! And here we are, two years after that day in Barbados, we started our adventure in Croatia. We made it happen working through all the challenges on the way. Now we are enjoying this wonderful life, and what a wonderful life it is! As we travel we will cross less fortunate countries, we would love to help to build a school or a health care centre, anything that these people may need, and in our beautiful world this is taken for granted. @TheMeriCrew sail SV Frolic to the beautiful island of Guadeloupe! What a wonderful place to spend time. The island's high volcanic peaks, lush forests filled with flowers and exotic plants, and beautiful surrounding waters made every day here a joy. We anchored for several nights in Deshaies, the location where the BBC series Death in Paradise is filmed. It is a welcoming little town with some great restaurants. A short walk away is a wonderful botanical garden. This was also our base for a land tour of the island with William of Pelican Tours. We also anchored in the area between Malendure beach and Bouliantte. In this episode Bill explains that the next project will be dropping the rudder because of suspect-looking pitting at the joint. Calico Skies is hauled out at Cabrales boat yard in Penasco Mexico and it's the beginning of a mini refit. For this project Bill first must first uninstall and remove the autopilot beginning with the loosening and removing the bolts that hold the drive it in place, followed by the quadrant and bolt on the bushing. Bill then uses pieces of wood to support the rudder underneath in anticipation of removing the bolts. Once the quadrant and stuffing box are loose the shaft is ready for movement! Bill then removes the remaining bolts and friends catch and position the rudder outside as the shaft moves out and the rudder drops down. Initially it's hard to see exactly what is going on with our rudder so Bill uses a wire brush attachment on the drill to remove surface debris. Unfortunately after some time it becomes apparent that the shaft is full of pitting, particularly where the thrust washer may have rubbed against the shaft over time. This crevice corrosion is a bad sign and at 1-2 millimeters far from negligible. Upon further investigation we learn from Sabre that the rudder shaft is not solid stainless rather a hollow pipe which is attached from the solid piece to the rudder. The pitting is two deep to ignore given that relatively shallow thickness of the pipe and that means the rudder either has to be repaired or rebuilt. Bill and Grace discuss their thought process when considering which option to choose for resolving the rudder problem. We decide to have it completely rebuilt because a Florida company already has the mold and a new one will give us peace of mind when crossing the ocean down the line. This brings us to the impact this will have on our plans: Given the cost to replace and the time it will take to have it made we feel that planning to prepare for an ocean crossing in upcoming March will be too rushed and cause us too much stress.
