A settembre ho trasferito Tornavento da Viareggio a La Spezia. Sono stato ospite della Sezione Velica della Marina Militare e della mia Sezione della Lega Navale Italiana, di cui sono socio. Una volta arrivato, avevo la necessità di ammainare la randa e consegnarla ai miei fantastici velai, Sail Design Viareggio, per un lavaggio e, dopo circa quattro anni, per rimuovere anche alcuni vecchi loghi. Riavuta la randa — in tempo record, ma ormai mi hanno abituato a questi interventi super rapidi e assistiti — dovevo uscire nel Golfo di La Spezia per testare i circuiti dei terzaroli e provare il nuovo cartografico Lighthouse di Raymarine. Come sempre, quando dico di essere solo a bordo, in realtà ho degli aiutanti… Qui vi presento Mario, il nostro pilota automatico Raymarine che, fino ad oggi, senza mai fare una piega, ha timonato Tornavento per alcune migliaia di miglia nautiche. È un video home made, nulla di super professionale, ma ci tenevo a farne uno dove mostro come utilizzo alcuni strumenti Raymarine, e come isso e ammaino la randa. Tutto qui: molto semplice, con una sola videocamera che “pilotavo” dal telefono. C’è un molo, rientrando verso la Sezione Velica, e sulla sinistra — dove sono ormeggiate le barche di Vela Tradizionale, un’associazione che personalmente mi piace moltissimo — non riesco mai a resistere: devo passarci vicino ogni volta e, da Pandora a Primo Amore, faccio sempre un inchino lungo tutto il loro molo. E infine… non me lo so spiegare, ma vedere aprirsi il ponte di Mirabello e passarci sotto è sempre una grande emozione! Non posso chiudere senza ringraziare, come sempre, i marinai che mi danno supporto all’ormeggio: i cari amici Adriano, Matteo e Claudio. Souvenirs d’un été 2025 inoubliable L’été 2025 restera longtemps gravé dans nos mémoires. Entre les rires, les longues soirées, les découvertes et les moments de farniente, c’est surtout l’ambiance unique de ces vacances qui nous a marqués. Mais si aujourd’hui on peut revivre chaque instant avec autant de clarté, c’est grâce à Loan, notre photographe attitré, qui n’a rien raté. Armé de son appareil photo, Loan a su capter bien plus que de simples images. Chaque cliché est un fragment d’émotion : le lever de soleil sur la plage, les éclats de rire autour du barbecue, les batailles d’eau improvisées, les balades en fin d’après-midi… Rien ne lui a échappé ! Il/elle a su être partout à la fois, toujours discret(e), toujours à l’affût du bon angle, du bon moment. Grâce à lui, on possède aujourd’hui un véritable album vivant de nos vacances. Feuilleter ses photos, c’est comme replonger dans la chaleur des journées d’été, dans l’insouciance de cette parenthèse enchantée. Ses images racontent une histoire – notre histoire – avec une sensibilité et un regard que seul Loan pouvait avoir. I am still alive! I SURVIVED direct hit from Hurricane Melissa on Epiphany! My 1972 C&C 39 hull # 24 kept me safe and alive just miles from here eyewall winds! This is a screen recording of me going live on Facebook in the middle of Hurricane Melissa! Accepted my fate when my survival was in question and death was a real possibility! I rode out Hurricane Melissa on anchor at Great Guana. I set sail at 8:30 pm from Georgetown , Exuma, Bahamas when Hurricane Melissa made that unexpected turn north toward Georgetown. Georgetown was in the path of the eye and knew I probably would not survive that I sailed away on the open Atlantic Ocean all night in what I thought were 12 to 16 ft waves. Reports later confirmed the waves were actually 18 ft to 25 ft as I sailed to get out of the path of the eyewall! Winds were already over 50 mph! I had to steer full rudder on the stops to climb each wave at an angle to prevent them from over washing the stern sinking Epiphany! Then I had to counter steer full rudder on the stops opposite direction surfing down each wave at an angle to keep from burying the bow in the next wave. If not the bow would plunge into them and water would overwashes the deck again all the way back smashing into me at the helm filling the cockpit! The waves and winds became unmanageable with Epiphany fighting for her life on each one in the night as Hurricane Melissa got closer to me! I went in Little Farmers Cut riding the 18 to 25 ft waves to get off the Atlantic Ocean! Fortunately this Inlet is deep and the waves were not breaking into sure.... called the "Rage" in Bahamas! Breaking waves will push you uncontrollably into the rocks! 40 hrs no sleep... engine running hot, bildge pump had failed.... lost all power to sailing instruments and chart plotter using Navionics on my phone for navigation I made it through the inlet. I was exhausted and beat up physically and mentally with conditions too hazardous to go on! I set my 3 anchors behind Great Guana Cay for protection from the 25 ft waves . My primary anchor was a 72 lb Mantus with 300 ft of 5/16 stainless steel chain out. My secondary anchor was a 65 lb Lamar Claw with 100ft of 3/8 chain and rope rodeMset 275 ft out. My 3rd anchor was a 65 lb CQR with 100 ft 3/8 chain and rope rode set 275 ft out. Accepted I may not survive the night I went on Facebook live to share what could be my final thoughts! I humbly share these with you!
