Sailing through the Kabui Passage is a bit nerve wracking as it's super narrow, has big sharp cliffs on either side and the current can run either way up to 5 knots. It is a big shortcut and it is a very beautiful river-like cruise if you have the courage. On the other side we are rewarded with a fresh water spring gushing out the side of a mountain through a beautiful cave. As we dont have a water maker we filled up our 400l tanks with this pure spring water. I had a 260nm passage ahead of me and this time with favourable winds. In the first 8 hours I banged out 75 miles and was loving it! Finally proper sailing! The night was also very good with minimal traffic, no squalls and lower but ok winds. After an epic breakfast of pancakes and fruit I was back at it, sailing fast and looking forward to arriving at my anchorage in good time. Just after lunch I was down below getting a drink and was thrown to the floor in a huge impact. Rushing upstairs fearing the worst I saw I'd collided with a huge tree. A few minutes after leaving Wakatobi an alarm started beeping loudly. I thought it was something relating to my boat for a minute until I realised it was an AIS Safety Warning, an alert being transmitted by someone in distress. It was 6-7nm out of my way and there were two ships passing the area much closer but when I radioed them they didnt seem concerned and said they'd "monitor" the situation. So I'm sailing Solo again! I'm really looking forward to this 1000nm trip. Sailing in Indonesia means you need to be flexible and adaptive. Almost nothing is as it is in western countries and that includes finding and buying fuel. I'm nearly out of diesel and it's time to track some down. Now the easiest way would be to just pay a local to go get it for me but I almost never use this option, I prefer to go on an adventure and see what happens. (also, if a local gets it you dont actually know what the quality will be like). I rip across to the mainland in the highfeild and then rent a horse to take me to the gas station. Enjoy this one. I flew to Australia to see a 54ft Aluminium sailing boat called Ivanhoe. It would need a total rebuild from bottom up and that is a HUGE job. Ivanhoe is a 54ft Aluminium sailing boat that is in total disrepair. I fly to Australia just to look this boat over and to see if it's the right project for us to take on. She was built as a flat-topped racing boat, then years later changes were made to convert her to a cruising boat but nothing was finished. Our circumnavigation of Sulawesi is completed and its time to sail southwest to Bali. The passage is around 375nm and we expect it to take 48hrs. A really nice forecast is predicted but we know by now that in these waters this is really just a guess. Sailing this magnificent hand built vessel for a day was pretty amazing! Anugerah Ilahi was built in a year, painstaking labour with simple tools on a beach near Makassar, Indonesia. She is a Pelari, a traditional trading vessel, used for hundreds of years in these waters. Horst Liebner is a German who has been living here for decades and has studied the maritime history of Indonesia. The vessel has no engine or modern equipment, everything is done by hand. The ship has 8 sails and tacking or typing is quite a manoeuvre, needing all hands working together. On this day we set of from the main harbour in Makassar, weaving around huge ships and made our way out into the ocean. The plan was to sail out a few miles then when the tide turned sail right back to where we started. The tide did turn but the hoped for currents stayed away and this meant we had no chance of getting back to our departure point. Such is life when you no engine, you work with what nature gives you, make the right decisions and stay safe. It's quite humbling to think that you only get 1 chance to anchor correctly!
