Leaving our boat tied up between two trees we journeyed by tender an hour up narrow forest channels then walked for an hour through pristine forest up to Badi Gaki, a very remote bird watching lodge. What an amazing experience we had! Getting lifted up 30m into the canopy to birds hides and observing these wonderful birds from very close quarters was something neither of us have ever experienced. We love sailing to remote places and this week we visit one of the least visited places in Indonesia. The Aru Islands lie just off the west coast of Papua, in a forgotten corner of the country. A few years ago I read a book called "The Malay Archipelago" by Alfred Wallace. He spent many years during the 1800's exploring remote places in this part of the of the world and discovered many many new species of animal. He spent a good deal of time in the Aru Islands and it fascinated me and I'd always wished to visit. Well, now was our chance! We collided with yet another log! This is the 4th one in 12 months and I'm over it! Fortunately this collision was not too bad and we only suffered minimal damage to the rudder and were able to continue on or way. I will repair the rudder at a later date. After that we had a pretty relaxing sail and anchored at an amazingly beautiful island. It's not often that you get an island all to yourself in Indonesia and we really enjoyed the peace and quiet. Later a boat full of locals came past and told us this particular island was sacred and thought to be possessed by devil spirits and that we shouldn't go ashore under any circumstances! Wow ok. A few days later, sailing to a new island our Jib started to break apart. I've sort of been waiting for it too happen so wasn't too surprised when it blew apart. Now we are in need of an expensive new sail! Sailing 120nm hard upwind was always going to be a challenge. When the wind increased to 25kts things got very bumpy and I was faced with a decision, reef lots and slow right down or continue with lots of sail and get to the shelter of an island faster. Sailing Misool you can find some amazing secrets to uncover so long as you are willing to explore. Zipping around the thousands of little islets we found some really amazing caves. Mostly unmarked, these caves showed themselves with some stalactites in the entry. Some of them were overgrown at the entry but we bush-bashed our way in and explored. Marie is not a huge fan of being deep underground but stuck with it and also saw some of the best stuff. Eli had no issues with the dark and tight places. Misool is truly a very special place. Sailing through the Kabui Passage is a bit nerve wracking as it's super narrow, has big sharp cliffs on either side and the current can run either way up to 5 knots. It is a big shortcut and it is a very beautiful river-like cruise if you have the courage. On the other side we are rewarded with a fresh water spring gushing out the side of a mountain through a beautiful cave. As we dont have a water maker we filled up our 400l tanks with this pure spring water. Replacing the clutch cone in my TwinDisc gearbox was something I had to figure out myself as I find myself in a remote location with no specialists available. After hitting a log while sailing at high speed I had plenty of repairs to get done. This is part 3 of 3 of my repair series in Sorong. In this video I finish up the gantry and anchor walkway, re-lash the trampolines. I take the gearbox in and out twice trying to figure out how to make my worn clutch work. Never give up! Repairing boats is not at the top of my list of fun things to do but what do can you do? I had just recently spent a week fixing my boat after hitting a log in Sulawesi and now this, another log, this time in Raja Ampat. I had a 260nm passage ahead of me and this time with favourable winds. In the first 8 hours I banged out 75 miles and was loving it! Finally proper sailing! The night was also very good with minimal traffic, no squalls and lower but ok winds. After an epic breakfast of pancakes and fruit I was back at it, sailing fast and looking forward to arriving at my anchorage in good time. Just after lunch I was down below getting a drink and was thrown to the floor in a huge impact. Rushing upstairs fearing the worst I saw I'd collided with a huge tree.
