One thing you can count on is the boatyard changing the plan with no notice whether you're ready or not. We were supposed to splash tomorrow morning, and instead they're putting us in at 6pm with the evening high tide. We still have a lot to do, so that's not welcome news. But first, we have to get the rudder's back in place.

Lately a lot of the projects we've been focusing on have spanned the course of months (even years for some). Those are super rewarding to chip away at and see something big and beautiful slowly form...but sometimes it's fun to watch something come from an idea to a tangible, masterfully crafted, functioning part of our future home in just days. These are like little dopamine hits for our boat building brains, and they are such a great morale boost when it feels like the work is never ending. Signature MERCI A TOUS POUR VOTRE SOUTIEN 🩵🩵🩵

We are heading back to Belfast, but this isn't just another sailing trip. Today is deeply personal. After four years of silence, I’m finally heading toward a long-awaited conversation to set things right and fix what was broken. But as every sailor knows, the sea has its own plans. Our approach to Belfast gets intense when a massive tugboat overtakes us at high speed, creating a dangerous wake that really puts Marisa and the crew to the test. Should there be stricter maritime regulations for commercial vessels in narrow channels? Let me know your thoughts in the comments! Join us for this journey of emotional closures, technical docking maneuvers, and the beauty of the Northern Irish coast. After leaving the Gulf Stream behind, we finally arrive on the Bahama Bank — and the ocean greets us with something completely unexpected. Glass-off conditions. The water turns into a mirror as far as we can see, leaving us with no wind and a long day and night of motoring across the shallow turquoise banks. With the autopilot set and nowhere to be in a hurry, the boys try their luck at fishing while we settle into the rhythm of passage life. But the calm doesn’t last forever. Before long, the wind begins to fill in… and it’s not quite what the forecast had promised. What starts as an easy crossing of the banks slowly begins to change, and we start getting our first hint that this passage south might not be as straightforward as we hoped. And at this point… we still have a long way to go. This is Day 1 (our first full day) of our daily passage sailing from the United States to Colombia aboard our 40-foot sailboat, Escapade. ► Wednesday, May 6th, 12:34 p.m., heading for Martinique ► When you dream of an Atlantic crossing, you mostly picture the night watches, dolphins bow-riding the keel, and sunsets out in the middle of the Atlantic. Much less the days spent provisioning the boat. Yet even before setting sail, it’s almost an expedition in its own right. In Portugal, we started by loading everything that needed to last: canned goods, pasta, rice, dry provisions, snacks, and above all, liters and liters of fresh water. 240 liters, to be exact. Day after day, the boat filled up with bags, crates, and carefully arranged supplies stored between the compartments and the galley on board. Perishables, on the other hand, were loaded at the last moment before departure: fruit, vegetables, and a few delicious dishes prepared by the French restaurant La Villa - meant to keep us going during the first days at sea until Las Palmas. My father had prepared a long, two-page provisioning list. And yet, that didn’t stop us from forgetting… a grater and a “rasp” (fine grater). On the other hand, there was no missing bread. One of the crew members seems to consider it absolutely essential to the success of the crossing, so that by the time we were in Las Palmas, a large part of the restocking had turned into a stockpile of bread in all its forms. As for me, I also thought it essential to bring a few hydrating face masks. Everyone has their priorities before an Atlantic crossing. ► After days of preparation, waiting, and final tweaks at the dock, we finally set sail. The 2026 WASZP Games was the largest North American WASZP event to date — and not everyone on the water had done this before. Alongside experienced WASZP sailors competing for the Championship title on Pensacola Bay, a group of Green Fleeters showed up ready to learn. Same bay, same conditions, different starting point. Coached by Jonathan Vries, the fleet spanned 12 to 50+ years old — some stepping onto a foiling boat for the very first time. Sailing Saint Barts. Sailing Vessel Reality Episode 79
Being last to enter an America’s Cup cycle is never a good look, but the Australian entry could be different. History suggests that winning the America’s Cup is about painstaking preparation, a well established team on shore and afloat, lots of money and a long runway to the match. At least that’s how its been for a very long time. But now the latest team to enter the 38th Cup has none of these and while it’s tempting to consider the Australians as outsiders because of this, there’s also a case for making an exception. Team Australia is not like other Cup teams, as Matt Sheahan explains. But whatever the outcome, the other thing that’s significant about the Australian announcement is that it takes the total number of Challengers to the biggest we’ve seen since the heady days of Valencia for the 32nd America’s Cup in 2007. And given the current climate, both financially and globally, that’s pretty impressive. So, here’s our take on the latest Cup news.

There's always something a bit magical about sailing in company with this beautiful, elegant fleet of mixed MOCRA multihulls. Add to that the buzz among the crews, excited at the season start, happy to see each other again, catch up on the winter's boat works and share plans for the season ahead. The six Dazcats, including the latest addition, the D1495 DMS Vinyl, complemented the fleet perfectly. For those who love seeing multihulls up close, this opening weekend of the UK Southwest MOCRA season delivered a superb three days of coastal racing. The lighter winds often kept the fleet tightly packed, creating fantastic opportunities for some beautiful close-quarter footage and sailing at wind speed and more in just 5 - 6 knots of breeze. With 13 boats on the start line, there was no shortage of action from some of the UK’s most interesting racing multihulls. Trimarans • Panoramix – Farrier F82R • Trying – 38ft Norman Cross • Uno – Grainger 36 • Gordano Goose – 40ft Nigel Irens (1981) • Morpheus – Shuttleworth 39 Catamarans • Saggita – Woods 30 • Ushant – Grainger TR • DMS Vinyl – Dazcat 1495 • Hissy Fit – Dazcat 1495 • Sueños – Dazcat 1195 • Easy Tiger – Dazcat 995R • Belladonna – Dazcat 10 • Bare Necessities – Dazcat 1150 (along for the cruise!) The race route took the fleet from Plymouth to Falmouth, Falmouth to Fowey, and back to Plymouth — a fantastic way to start the season. Huge thanks to the organisers at the Royal Western Yacht Club and to sponsors Ullman Sails, Plymouth Gin and Allspars. The Falmouth dock party was a particular highlight and thoroughly enjoyed by everyone involved. Thanks also to Fowey Harbour for arranging pontoons for us and the Royal Fowey Yacht Club for accommodating us all with the BBQ. Enjoy the racing, the close-up boat shots, and the atmosphere of a brilliant opening weekend on the water. Filming from on board D10 Belladonna with some additional footage from D1495 Hissy Fit and winning boat Panoramix, Farrier F89R trimaran.

This week, Team Oaracle continues transforming optimism into forward motion, Team Hell ’n’ Ready prepares to drag a heavy Columbia 10.7 north using the power of cheesecake, and Team Pas Si Vite arrives armed with avalanche training, offshore safety protocols, and the rare ability to notice as determination becomes stupidity. This week, your dose of R2AK is brought to you by TimeZero—check out the TZ iBoat app—way better than other “Boating” apps out there.
This was a BIG WIN for us this week, we've got a couple weeks to go before we leave the marina and having this leak in the tank was not something we budgeted for. This episode Phoebe bogs and glass the outside of the tank herself, Josh gets to flex his design and build of our fuel polishing system, and we introduce the new member of our family - a stray kitten found in a rubbish pile...VERY fitting for us as regular dumpster divers! _____________________________________________________________________________ PATREON: https://www.patreon.com/TheNewKidsOnTheDock PAYPAL: https://www.paypal.com/donate/?hosted_button_id=KNLJDGDXPAYAU WISHLIST: https://www.myregistry.com/wishlist/josh-and-phoebe-coomera-queensland/5046646 _____________________________________________________________________________ We would like to acknowledge the Traditional Custodians of the land and seas which we work, play and live on: the Kombumerri peoples. Sailing vessel Tapatya This is the story of SV Tapatya, a self-built, Jay Benford designed, 31.8ft, junk schooner-rigged cruising sailboat. The videos are a week-by-week record of our adventures as I live aboard, sail and strive to find out just what such a self-built, low-budget vessel is capable of. These videos take a lot of time and effort to make, in what is already a time-intensive project. Your support in watching, subscribing and sharing these videos is very much appreciated.

Why would you want or need to re-index your feathering prop? In our case, we’ve been living with limitations on engine RPMs. Specifically, when motoring we couldn’t go above 2,000 RPMs or the engine would start to heat up. Staying below 2,000 worked fine, but it isn’t how the boat was delivered. Over time, I became convinced that one of the techs who worked on the prop (there have been two) did not put the prop back together the way they’d found it. As a result, I felt, the prop had become “over-pitched.” This is a condition whereby the blade angle is too steep, making it more difficult to rotate in the water. This would create excess drag on the prop, translating to the engine having to work too hard. #sailing yacht talisman, #sailing, #sailing youtube, #boating, #top sailing, #oyster yachts, #oyster sailboats, #oyster 485, #offshore, #bluewater, #blue water, #sailing vlog, #sailing vblog, #sailing videos, #cruising, #monohull, #boat projects, #offshore how to, #boat life, #marine, #pyi, #maxprop, #indexing, #feathering prop, #adjustable prop, #lubriplate 130-aa, #overheating
So many jobs, so little time remaining. Tomorrow we're being lifted on the trailer to put the rudders back in, so tonight is it. The last critical pieces must be done tonight. We'll sleep when we're dead! There is a ton of stuff under the boat that must be moved to make room for the trailer, and of course the chain and anchor needs to get on board. Let's get busy!
