No one ever said this was going to be easy! A project of this size can take years and hundreds of thousands of dollars - and we’ve set the ambitious goal to do it in just two months. We’re in debt and have minimal cash to get floating, but what we lack in finance we make up for in passion. If this episode seems a bit chaotic, lacks structure with an extra dash of madness… but that’s because it is! Crikey this is a wild one, but are we glad to be in it together! Cheers! _____________________________________________________________________________ For ad-free and early release episodes, behind the scenes content and live updates, check out our Patreon! We're kicking the end of the year off with the satisfying resolution to the ultimate question "What the heck was growing on our abandoned boat?!". This massive job took 2 whole days, and although this clean was purely for aesthetics...we feel like it's given us the boost of morale that we needed to power through the last 2 weeks of the build. We hope you feel great satisfaction watching this, as much as we felt doing it! Happy holidays everyone 💙 We would like to acknowledge the Traditional Custodians of the land and seas which we work, play and live on: the Kombumerri peoples. We pay our respects to Elders past, present and emerging: and extend that respect to all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. Always was, always will be 🖤💛❤️ _____________________________________________________________________________ For ad-free and early release episodes, behind the scenes content and live updates, check out our Patreon! This video doesn't need a description...you asked, we delivered! With less than 2 weeks until float day we can finally justify spending the time giving this 56ft Abandoned Cat the pressure wash of her/your/our dreams! It's coming to the pointy end of the boatyard arrow...and we're pointing it directly to all of the final jobs that have been hanging overhead. This week, Phoebe is away, so Josh rally's his mates to help him bog, fair and paint the hull, calculate the volumes of our onboard tanks, Brett returns to put the cherry on top of our port engines and we tick enough jobs off the list so we can justify the time to...wait for it...CLEAN THE HULL!!! It's go time! _____________________________________________________________________________ INNERBLOOM FOR SALE: https://yachthub.com/list/yachts-for-sale/used/sail-monohulls/adams-35-innerbloom/335935 For ad-free and early release episodes, behind the scenes content and live updates, check out our Patreon! INNERBLOOM NOW FOR SALE: https://yachthub.com/list/yachts-for-sale/used/sail-monohulls/adams-35-innerbloom/335935 5 years ago, Josh and I bought this steel, sloop rigged mono hull from Mooloolaba, QLD. The second time we'd set foot on a sailboat was the passage taking her home after purchase. 2 years living in a trawler harbour, then 3 years of cruising 6000nm up and down Australias East Coast...and now 2 melancholy but satisfied sailors. Our chapter with Innerbloom, our Joe Adams design 35ft mopno, is now coming to an end. We hope that we can find the right owner for her that will keep her doing what she's made for - SAILING and ADVENTURING! Every system aboard Innerbloom has been maintained, upgraded or replaced - she is a true turn-key cruiser ready to sail tomorrow. She's humble, but she's capable! Ultra-modern and powerful electrical system, luxe new carpets and upholstery, raw water washdown, bluetooth windlass system, outdoor bbq set up...the list could go on! Spearfishing, trolling, diving surfing - Innerbloom's made that happen for us. These 5 years have been the time of our lives and we can confidently say that we have experienced the transformation of a total Innerbloom 💜 We love this boat so much, and we hope to share this dream with the new owner one day soon... _____________________________________________________________________________ For ad-free and early release episodes, behind the scenes content and live updates, check out our Patreon! We're smashing it out this episode: sanding, glassing, painting...and skating? After the regrets from last episode - starting to completely sand off the layer of mysterious black paint - we realise that all we can do is simply learn from our mistakes and commit to the bit. We're taking it back to bare hull, removing the unknowns and familiarising ourselves with this new world of fibreglass! Look, we’re good at lots of things, but sanding our foam sandwich KSS 56?? Not so much. Our Adams35 Innerbloom was steel - we know how to handle it, we know how to fix it. Uncharted until just a month ago, Fibreglass was an entire different world to what we’ve known. This episode, we’re stripping back the layers of unknown: a black material hardened on the hull after a decade on the hard. We don’t know what it is and we don’t have a contact for the previous owner, so we’re taking it all off and starting from scratch. This is a risky move so soon until float day in less than a month, and with our substandard skills of sanding glass hulls, we may have just opened a huge can of worms… For ad-free and early release episodes, behind the scenes content and live updates, check out our Patreon! FINALLY! What a relief to have both of our Volvo Penta D275 engines working after 15years idle and forgotten. This episode is another nitty gritty dive into the inner workings of our portside inboard. Last week we started the work on our rudder tangs - shaping and gluing Coosa board as per the advice from fellow yachtsman. But when you're working with new-age tech with mm accuracy like the CNC machine, our novice handywork just simply won't cut it (pun very much intended). This week, we're undoing all of the hard yakka on our tangs and trying our hand at new techniques that will not only make it easier for the boys at Ocean Degree to scan them, but also hopefully lessen the furrow in your brow! Having lived on a steel boat for 5 years, glassing is unfamiliar to us. But this week, we're diving head first into new trades and skills as we finalise the build on our two rudders for this Dereck Kelsall Catamaran! Rudders have been our number one priority on this abandoned catamaran rebuild - and since we were quoted $50,000 to have them made, we’ve decided to take the risk and build them ourselves. We’ve roped in a few great minds to help bring them to life, which means there’s no shortage of ideas… or opinions. Something tells us this DIY might take a little longer than we expect... Today, we dive into uncovering the truth of our Kelsall 57 inboard motors. Installed brand new, never run and a gamble we're not yet sure was worth taking. There's an entire protocol required to get both of these motors running again - but today we're starting with the cosmetics, and jobs that we have a basic understanding of. Before our diesel mechanic mate comes to give us a hand with the resuscitation, we're trying our hand at the diesel work and getting to know our new (old) motors as best we can. This week, everything came together - a cracking downwind sail, fishing along the reef and mangroves and creating the kind of memories that stay with you forever. We’re sailing to Goldsmith Island, part of the Sir James Smith Island group, a place that reminded us exactly why we fell in love with this life at sea along the East Coast of QLD Australia. Right now, we’re deep in our new catamaran build, but looking back on days like this from last year’s adventures keeps us grounded and excited for what’s ahead on the Cat! Join us as Phoebe catches the fishing bug, and Josh celebrates the end of his solo-fishing days 😝 We’re a little behind on our videos - we’re just having too much fun! This week we’re tackling what might be the biggest challenge of our project so far: designing the rudders for our Derek Kelsall catamaran. With just 6 weeks left on the hardstand and a budget that won’t stretch a day longer - the pressure is ON to get our rudders designed, built and fitted, fast. But here's the issue - just as we finalise our own design, we get sent the original Kelsall KSS 58 rudder plans, and they look NOTHING like what we’ve come up with. With our steering system already in place, it makes our rudder design choice the toughest decision of the entire project so far... stick with our instincts or trust the Kelsalls plans? These past few weeks have been a wild ride: deadlines, invoices, boatyard drama and a boat project that only seems to be expanding in size and scale. But the beauty for us is that we're running on a parallel timeline: one week we release our Catamaran Project, and the alternate is back in time to our sailing adventures up the East Coast of QLD. This alternation between the two lives has been a consistent source of inspiration and peace for us to get through these next few weeks, and years, of boatwork. We hope you enjoy sailing and adventuring with us this week on Hummocky Island...because next week it's full steam ahead on the Cat! This week we’re tying up all the little jobs that have been hanging over us before we dive headfirst into the real refit. From the sale yard to the boatyard, this move marks a huge milestone for our 58ft catamaran...and for us!!! It’s the end of the beginning, and the start of the work that will truly shape this boat into our home. Rudders to build, engines to service, hull to prep and countless projects ahead. This is how we celebrate our anniversary, the sailor’s way - stripped back and free! This episode we're taking it back to July 2024 as we celebrate 5 years of being together,o in Rainbow Beach, QLD. We sail with whales, set up our whisker pole with our new (second hand) furler for the first time and crank some Dire Straits as we cruise further up the coast 🤟🏼 Sailing isn't without sacrifice, but it's the gift that keeps on giving. Everyday on the water we're reminded that money comes and goes, but our precious time is most vital commodity. So we really appreciate you spending your time with us this week 💙
This episode will mark our first week as the new owners of an abandoned Catamaran - a boat that has never yet had the chance to glide across oceans. After over a decade on the hardstand and almost 4 different owners, this Kelsall KSS 58 couldn't be more deserving of a new chapter. But before we can even think to begin to write it, we need to know the truth - why has she been left on the hard for so long? What went so wrong for the previous owners? How can such a beautiful vessel travel less than 2 miles up a river in her over 10yrs of existence? Amongst these questions, we're also met with adversary. Although we bought her at a fair auction, this week we've faced some hard truths. Not everyone is happy for us...and a boatyard is a place that requires friendships and networks. Join us this episode as we dig a little deeper into a story best forgotten, and look forward to a story not yet written 💙 We’re a little behind on our videos - we’re just having too much fun! Day 1 of ? 2 days before this episode, we bought a Kelsall 58 at auction having seen it only the day before. After a stressful 24hrs crunching numbers and grinding our teeth, we pulled the trigger and committed to a life on two hulls! With only 3 years of sailing experience in total under our belt, we feel like we're swimming in the deep end now. There's YEARS of work ahead of us to get this Catamaran to where she deserves to be, but it's going to be the best adventure of our youth ❤️🔥 Today, we peel back the layers of this mystery vessel, give you a bit of a boat tour, and start to get the bigger picture of what's in store for us. We have 0 experience with refit's of this scale, but with our excitement for the project and passion for the ocean, we know we'll have what it takes. Cheers!
