This week, everything came together - a cracking downwind sail, fishing along the reef and mangroves and creating the kind of memories that stay with you forever. We’re sailing to Goldsmith Island, part of the Sir James Smith Island group, a place that reminded us exactly why we fell in love with this life at sea along the East Coast of QLD Australia. Right now, we’re deep in our new catamaran build, but looking back on days like this from last year’s adventures keeps us grounded and excited for what’s ahead on the Cat! Join us as Phoebe catches the fishing bug, and Josh celebrates the end of his solo-fishing days 😝 We’re a little behind on our videos - we’re just having too much fun! This week we’re tackling what might be the biggest challenge of our project so far: designing the rudders for our Derek Kelsall catamaran. With just 6 weeks left on the hardstand and a budget that won’t stretch a day longer - the pressure is ON to get our rudders designed, built and fitted, fast. But here's the issue - just as we finalise our own design, we get sent the original Kelsall KSS 58 rudder plans, and they look NOTHING like what we’ve come up with. With our steering system already in place, it makes our rudder design choice the toughest decision of the entire project so far... stick with our instincts or trust the Kelsalls plans? These past few weeks have been a wild ride: deadlines, invoices, boatyard drama and a boat project that only seems to be expanding in size and scale. But the beauty for us is that we're running on a parallel timeline: one week we release our Catamaran Project, and the alternate is back in time to our sailing adventures up the East Coast of QLD. This alternation between the two lives has been a consistent source of inspiration and peace for us to get through these next few weeks, and years, of boatwork. We hope you enjoy sailing and adventuring with us this week on Hummocky Island...because next week it's full steam ahead on the Cat! This week we’re tying up all the little jobs that have been hanging over us before we dive headfirst into the real refit. From the sale yard to the boatyard, this move marks a huge milestone for our 58ft catamaran...and for us!!! It’s the end of the beginning, and the start of the work that will truly shape this boat into our home. Rudders to build, engines to service, hull to prep and countless projects ahead. Thanks for being here as we take the next step in this journey - the boatyard chapter begins now! 😍 For ad-free and early release episodes, behind the scenes content and live updates, check out our Patreon! This is how we celebrate our anniversary, the sailor’s way - stripped back and free! This episode we're taking it back to July 2024 as we celebrate 5 years of being together,o in Rainbow Beach, QLD. We sail with whales, set up our whisker pole with our new (second hand) furler for the first time and crank some Dire Straits as we cruise further up the coast 🤟🏼 Sailing isn't without sacrifice, but it's the gift that keeps on giving. Everyday on the water we're reminded that money comes and goes, but our precious time is most vital commodity. So we really appreciate you spending your time with us this week 💙
This episode will mark our first week as the new owners of an abandoned Catamaran - a boat that has never yet had the chance to glide across oceans. After over a decade on the hardstand and almost 4 different owners, this Kelsall KSS 58 couldn't be more deserving of a new chapter. But before we can even think to begin to write it, we need to know the truth - why has she been left on the hard for so long? What went so wrong for the previous owners? How can such a beautiful vessel travel less than 2 miles up a river in her over 10yrs of existence? Amongst these questions, we're also met with adversary. Although we bought her at a fair auction, this week we've faced some hard truths. Not everyone is happy for us...and a boatyard is a place that requires friendships and networks. Join us this episode as we dig a little deeper into a story best forgotten, and look forward to a story not yet written 💙 We’re a little behind on our videos - we’re just having too much fun! We're saying goodbye to the Portabote and hello to an inflatable tender! The catch is, it's deflated, dirty and in need of some LURVVV! Day 1 of ? 2 days before this episode, we bought a Kelsall 58 at auction having seen it only the day before. After a stressful 24hrs crunching numbers and grinding our teeth, we pulled the trigger and committed to a life on two hulls! With only 3 years of sailing experience in total under our belt, we feel like we're swimming in the deep end now. There's YEARS of work ahead of us to get this Catamaran to where she deserves to be, but it's going to be the best adventure of our youth ❤️🔥 Today, we peel back the layers of this mystery vessel, give you a bit of a boat tour, and start to get the bigger picture of what's in store for us. We have 0 experience with refit's of this scale, but with our excitement for the project and passion for the ocean, we know we'll have what it takes. Cheers! As we said - parallel timeline! We're taking you back now to a year ago, on our second season of our northward passage up the East Coast of Australia. After a tumultuous passage, we pull into port and quickly learn that something's amiss with the inboard. Before we can even consider our passage the following day, we've got some boat work to do 🙏🏻 Join us this episode for some engine work, a sprightly sail and a lost mainsail baton! Our lives just took an unexpected turn! With less than 24 hours notice, we bought an abandoned catamaran at auction...because why not completely change the course of your life on a whim?! After having come to some stark realisations about our current floating home, our desire to upgrade so that we can sail the world with our family and friends, buying this Kelsall KSS 57 (the ad said 57ft...but we're certain she's 58ft!) at auction was NOT part of that plan. But here we are, diving headfirst into a full-scale project boat we’ve never sailed before. With just two years of (novice) sailing experience behind us, we’re equal parts terrified and thrilled. But we’ve got big hearts and even bigger dreams...let’s see where this journey takes us! From here on in, we'll be releasing our videos 1-1: one episode sailing the East Coast of Aus, and the next will be our refit project. We're so excited about this new endeavour - thanks for being here! 💜 We’re a little behind on our videos - we’re just having too much fun! We’re back for our second episode of the season and the ocean wasted no time testing us 🥴 This passage from Tangalooma to (intended) Double Island was one of our most challenging sails yet. But amidst the chaos, we know that the adventure for the next year ahead will help soothe our stress wounds, and from every hard passage comes growth. Dolphins bow riding helps a lot too 😝 Come aboard as we sail headfirst into season two - slightly saltier, still learning and somehow still loving every second of it!! We're hitting pause on boat work and getting back to what we actually signed up for - sailing! We're kicking off our first season on the Tube a little early so that we can keep things moving (the blessing and curse of having a backlog of footage). We're sailing from Ballina to Tweed Heads for the first passage of our second season up North as novice sailors. You might spot a few upgrades onboard...yep, that’s a new (second hand) autopilot. Keep an eye out for our upcoming mini-series where we show you how we built and installed it…using second-hand parts we scrounged up online in true NKOTD style 😝 We hope you enjoy this episode - sailing with whales and Christopher Cross! A big round of applause for Josh and his debut behind the editing desk! 👏✨ He was eager to lend his hand to this episode - fondly revisiting his day with Darrin the Yacht Rigger as they installed a reconditioned Profurl C420 roller furler on our 40-year-old Adams35, Innerbloom. We felt incredibly fortunate to have Darrin’s expertise guiding us through the process, sharing those tips and tricks that we’ll carry forward on our sailing adventures. In this episode, we also open up about what it actually cost us to fit a secondhand unit vs splurging on something brand new - a choice that turned out to be even wiser after we managed to damage our “new-to-us” pre-loved vlogging camera on only its second use. Safe to say, every penny saved counts! 😅 Thanks for coming along with us! ⚓️💙 We’re a little behind on our videos - we’re just having too much fun! When we first learned about sailing we were sitting on the beach watching a boat go past out to sea. We wondered what the view would be like as it sailed along the coast. Five years later, doing it on our own boat, we know exactly what it’s like and this video shares the joys and challenges faced with coastal cruising the east coast of Australia. Sailing close to the coast we take in the views and stay out of the worst of the chop but some bays can’t be avoided. In this week’s episode, we’re getting ready to install a second-hand Profurl C420! But before we can fit the unit on Innerbloom, we need to service and replace the bearings in the top swivel. We also dive into some sail education by helping our friend Allan repair foil segments on his Profurl C320 and hoist his brand new Dacron sail. We chat about cruising laminates and how his sail has performed during its (short) life so far. We're ramping up for some serious upgrades on Innerbloom over the next few weeks - so if you're into DIY boat work, stay tuned for lots of upcoming projects, all using recycled, second-hand parts! We're truly thrilled to be wrapping up this challenging chapter - our second haul out of our steel Adams 35 during peak wet season! Amidst the spontaneous showers, we've persevered through the boatwork with our eyes and hearts set on the horizon. It's been a testing time for us, having much to do and little means to do it (weather not-permitting) 🤪 But with help from our friends and a whole year of cruising to look forward to, we're doing the best with what we've got, hoping that Innerbloom wears this botched anti-foul job as best as she can! Picking up on day two of our haul out, we uncover the truths below our waterline. For the second year in a row, the blistering on our hull demands our attention. Why has it returned so soon after the last treatment? Backed into a corner with weather and time constraints, we seek answers from the community around us. Electrolysis, galvanic corrosion, stray current, anode calculations, sandblasting - we explore all possibilities as we continue to learn. Join us this episode as we apply what little experience we have as novice sailors to get our 45 year old steel sailboat back into the water - ASAP! ABOUT OUR BOAT: - Innerbloom. Previously named Nui. It's an unfortunate affair hauling out a steel boat in the middle of the wettest season of Northern NSW! But with only a few days to treat rust, antifoul and update old systems on the boat, we're going to have to take what we can get! After our first season as novice sailors, we find ourselves coming full circle and hauling out in our home port of Ballina, NSW. Old yatchies with a lifetime of experience band together to help us solve problems beyond our knowledge. Rain, hail or shine we're making the most of it and bring our high energy and excitement to this haul out as we prepare for our second year of cruising! ABOUT US: We are Josh (1996), Phoebe (1998) and Sonya (2022) who is our baby bearded dragon. We met in 2019 and 3 weeks later discovered our dream of sailing together having never stepped foot on a sailboat ourselves. Within this month of meeting we knew were undoubtedly madly in love, and that we wanted to continue this love story on the ocean. Our shared passion for nomadism, nature, minimalistic living and adventure fueled the fire of this insane dream of one day being able to sell all that we own to sail full time. In February 2020 we moved aboard our new floating home having purchased her only 6 months before sight unseen and proceeded to live in a trawler harbour for 2 years. Her previous owner lived on the hard stand for 10 years, so Innerbloom was set up for full time living - not cruising. We spent the next 2 years upgrading vital systems and electrics, treating rust and trying to learn as much as we could about sailing and sailboats whilst working full time. Josh worked at a sugar mill as an Electrician and instrumentation technician and Phoebe worked an online business and as a Librarian’s Assistant. In March of 2023 we set sail from our home port of Ballina, NSW, to embark on our first season of cruising up the East Coast of Queensland having only sailed Innerbloom a handful of times. It sounded insane…and it was! We were taking a chance on a dream having little to no control over its outcome. But we’re now at the tail end of our first season of sailing with no plans of stopping any time soon! We strive for transparency on our channel which means that we quite literally share all of the ebbs and floods of our novice sailing journey. It is our immense pleasure to share our story and adventures with you on the tube! So if you’re new here - hop aboard and be sure to hit subscribe to be notified of weekly videos.
We're pretty stoked/relieved/excited to have not only made it back after our first year as novice sailors but to also be eager for many more years of it to come! This episode we're having a little sit down chat to share more with you of our plans and goals for next season as well as vital upgrades we feel are necessary to make our year of full-time cruising safer and more enjoyable. We're jumping straight into our haul out the following day and go over what we plan to do over that week to the inside and outside of Innerbloom. We want to extend our gratitude to you all for being so supportive. All of your comments and advice is held close to our hearts. At the time of filming this, we had not yet opened our Patreon - but we also want to take this time to thank out Patrons as well for their support! We're super keen to get going on this boat work, so until next week - we hope you enjoy this cruisey sit down chat with us! Big love, the Kids. This episode, we're taking 3 days to sail from Inskip point to Ballina which officially marks the end of our first season of sailing Queensland! We're in disbelief that we actually made it back, having NEVER sailed before...and furthermore to be looking at our future with a new lens! Sailing has captivated our hearts and we quite simply can't see ourselves doing anything else for the foreseeable future 😝 So many triumphs, so many lessons - so much to be grateful for!
