This 57ft catamaran had been abandoned for 10 years when we took ownership of her and after 12 months of hard grind, she’s looking pretty bloody good! In the last 12 months, we transformed a once abandoned 57ft Dereck Kelsall catamaran into our new floating home. We’ve celebrated our one year anniversary, enjoyed life on anchor, and now we’re back on a dock to crack into the next stage of the project! We met Benny from Zilla jetboats on the project one day when he wondered down to offer help. Before we knew his crazy abilities we hand balled him the task of building the missing hub for our helm. He built it to perfection AND cut a bee into it for some personal flare, which Phoebe loved! We later learned that Benny had watched our videos from the Innerbloom days! He was a real Day One. Ben has been dying to get us out on the jet boat he builds all in house at Zilla, he knew how much fun we would have and he wasn’t wrong. This is such a ridiculously wild way to enjoy the water, if I had to compare it to anything it’s like riding a dirt bike on single trails. This is the sort of mate that builds an indestructible boat, throws you the keys and says ‘go for it’. 8 days to go and we've left our water tanks to the last minute...a mistake we're having to pay for. When our starboard keel tank was written off from a diesel leak, we felt pretty lucky to have two gray water tanks in our aft cabins to use in the meantime. But something we failed to consider is that if a tank was built for waste water...it's probably not safe for potable. It's not perfect, but it's our temporary solution to living off-grid so we can get off the marina dock ASAP. We’ve been slogging away for 8 months on the catamaran build, but this week we’re kicking off the dirty boat yard clothes to scrub up for the 2026 Sanctuary Cove Boat show! The biggest boat show in Australia has plenty to offer, we’ve spent three days exploring as much as we can. Let us take you through sail catamarans and monohulls, explore the trade stalls and introduce some of the companies who are helping us make vital systems on this build possible. We have a limited knowledge on multihulls, so our mate Jai Tooley jumps onboard for a day to share his passion with us as we explore new entries to the charter market, crowd favorite performance cruisers and the high end performance sail cats. This has proven to be the toughest job so far on our build - our in-built fuel tanks are leaking diesel into the bilge...which has now leaked into our water tanks too. Both tanks cannot be removed and both tanks are needed for us to get out of the marina. We bought a 57ft project catamaran at auction just 6 months ago. After 82 days of non-stop work, we transformed a yacht that had been sitting abandoned for 7 years into an almost unrecognisable diamond of a vessel. We've overcome some massive hurdles to get this boat launched for the first time in its life - building rudders, bringing the engines back to life, engineering the steering system and wet exhaust. But now, all this seems like a champagne, spinnaker sail compared to work involved in fixing this problem that we've just uncovered. The last ever job we did on the hardstand that we couldn't complete. Today we are revisiting the tiller arm setup and taking them to a trusted engineer shop to do a critical modification. It'll either improve their performance immensely or destroy them completely. We run through the work with Watson Marine Engineering, cutting a keyway into the internal bore of the tiller arms. That SHOULD be enough work for one episode...but we don’t have any time to waste because we are trying to get out of the marina ASAP, so it’s on to the next job! Commissioning our diesel tanks: we had some pickup plates fabricated so it's time to mount them too!
