Welcome to the Royal Western Yacht Club's Triangle Race - quite possibly our favourite event of the year. Why? Because it kicks off the season with a brilliant cocktail of unpredictable sailing and even more unpredictable socialising between the coastal legs: Plymouth - Falmouth - Fowey - Plymouth. Throw in the MOCRA Nationals and a fast (and slow)-paced day of round-the-cans racing in Plymouth Sound, and you've got something properly special. This one's for the multihull lovers. It's a visual feast of boats in all shapes, sizes, wind speeds and angles, and a range of sea states. Of the 15 boats racing, eight (including six Dazcats) are signed up for the 2025 RORC Fastnet. Add the two Dazcats who missed this race (because they were RORC racing), and Multihull Centre boats are making up half of this year's Fastnet MOCRA fleet. And that really is quite something! Filming comes from on board D10 Belladonna, where Dazcat Media is learning the art of media production on a smaller, livelier platform - and with just three crew, media time is often an unaffordable luxury. Just as there's a great shot coming up, a sail needs trimming or a tack or gybe has to be put in, so it's with huge thanks to D1495 Hissy Fit for stepping up with extra footage. And finally, massive thanks to RWYC and MOCRA for putting on the Nationals, and to our brilliant local sponsors (all of whom were either racing themselves or people from their own teams on board the different boats): PR Systems Marine Electronics, Allspars Riggers, Highwater Sails, and Multihull Centre. Music with thanks to @LandoftheGiants
There are many good reasons why the Royal Ocean Racing Club requires all boats entering the Fastnet race to complete at least 300nm of offshore racing with at least 50% of the crew including skipper. The video speaks for itself. Find out about all the RORC qualifying criteria and the history behind them on our website: https://www.multihullcentre.com/2025/06/06/the-thin-line-between-fast-or-foolish/
Just 14 hours after crossing the line on the Round Ireland Race, Dazcat 1495 'Hissy Fit' is off cruising with family and friends. Hissy Fit completed the somewhat gruelling 700++ mile offshore in 5th position over the line out of 48 starters, and 2nd in the MOCRA under 50ft class...This video is about Hissy Fit's superb cruising after the race. But just stop and consider for a moment: Hissy Fit, Simon and his friend Dan all needed to be spotlessly presentable, as fresh as possible and in full working order for the arrival of Tracey and Claire to start the cruise. They also had to celebrate with the rest of the crew before they departed. Hissy Fit's durability (no breakages during the race), ease of cleaning and low maintenance are the only things that make this possible. It's just one aspect of the Dazcat magic that you only understand if you understand - we prefer to spend more time sailing and less time fixing and cleaning our boats. Simon, director at the Multihull Centre and build oversight of Dazcats, sails his boat to test, prove and develop the design and build. He also happens to love winning races. But he and his wife Tracey also love exploring the beautiful coastlines and harbours within easy sailing reach of home and with all the home comforts on board. It's been a particularly wet and unpredictable summer but still they managed to find some gorgeous sunshine and stunning sights on the Irish southern coast and the beautiful Isles of Scilly, visiting 12 different harbours and anchorages. Wildlife, scenery and a few tips to remember both on the water and ashore. Thank you to Simon and Tracey for sharing their holiday, and to Hissy Fit for completing around 1600 nautical miles in just one month and bringing everyone home safe and happy. The adventure unfolds amidst an impressive backdrop of huge skies, massive scenery and superb commentary. It doesn't get much more real than racing 700+nm offshore and the Dazcat teams tell it as it is. Four Dazcats, armed with GoPros, embarked on the exhilarating SSE Renewables Round Ireland Race joining a fleet of 48 boats in a high-stakes adventure. Their mission? To leave Ireland and all its islands (except Rockall) to starboard. Along the way they faced a huge variety of sea and wind conditions as the Atlantic Ocean meets the notorious waters of the Irish coast. It was nobody's ideal conditions and of the 48 registered boats 13 retired for various reasons. Amidst the trials of the elements, the Dazcats revelled in the beauty of the Irish coastline and provided viewers with a tour guide's perspective intermingled with heated competition, commentary on conditions at sea, sail plans and life on board. The Dazcat teams provided an intimate glimpse into their world, showcasing the boats and the passionate sailors behind them. It's clear that Dazcat owners are in it for the thrill of the sail and all the pleasure that goes with that. All are racing their hardest, in it to win it, yet often behave more like cruising tourists than racers-one well known for its love of good food even managed to cook up a BBQ dinner mid-race, thereafter dubbed as 'Team BBQ'. This behind-the-scenes look reveals the intensity of serious racing, accomplished with a touch of Dazcat flair. Can they really keep the boats moving in just 5 knots of breeze? What sails do they use? How do they stay safe while surfing downwind at over 20 knots? What challenges do they encounter, and how do they overcome them? How hard can you actually push a Dazcat? These questions and more are answered as the crews share their race with you. Simon, Hissy Fit's owner, is Director at the Multihull Centre and builder of Dazcat. Pushing his boat to the limit in all conditions is Simon's speciality so pay close attention to the builder and how he sails if you want to know more about the Dazcat principles in action. In fact, pay close attention to them all. This epic race is a testament to the spirit of adventure and the love of great sailing that defines Dazcats and their owners. Each boat brings their own story to life, making for an unforgettable race around Ireland and an up-close look at Dazcats in action.. After race quote from Foxy: We've been so happy and proud to be part of team Dazcat - a bunch of wonderful people sharing adventure in properly impressive boats. The way Foxy looked after us for 12+ hours in the wild and relentless Irish Sea with gusts of 36 knots was reassuring to the core. Thank you #dazcat for building such strong and amazing boats. With thanks to Royal Ocean Racing Club for organising, Wicklow Sailing Club for hosting and sponsors SSE Renewables. On May 24th and 25th, the Royal Navy Sailing Association (RNSA) race from Plymouth to St. Peter Port, Guernsey, showcased an unusual battle among four Dazcats and a Newick trimaran. Minimal winds and scattered pockets created personal 'boosts' for each boat in turn. Combined with challenging currents, the diverse Dazcat fleet-comprising D1495 'Hissy Fit', D1295 'Foxy', D1150 'Bare Necessities', and D995R 'Easy Tiger'-engaged in a close contest over the 80-nautical mile course. At one point it looked as though the Newick would take overall on handicap... Throughout the race positions continuously shifted among the Dazcats as they navigated the light airs, sometimes surging ahead and other times falling back. Each Dazcat, varying in age and model, demonstrated their well-matched capabilities, making for an interesting if sometimes confusing spectacle for the observer on Marine Traffic. As the fleet approached Guernsey they faced a decision: take the northern or southern route around the island. Despite the northern route appearing less favourable, 'Foxy' made a daring choice to break from the pack and head north. While her competitors inched their way ever more painfully and eventually resorted to their engines with the finish line in sight, Foxy glided across the line just before the cut-off, clinching her first victory and being the sole multihull to complete the race under sail. Team Foxy's win is a testament to their growing confidence and strategic acumen. Although they modestly claim not to be racers, their participation and keen observations have honed their instincts and tactics, culminating in this, their first real triumph. As these same four Dazcats gear up for the SSE Renewables Round Ireland Race starting June 22nd, anticipation is high. 'Hissy Fit', known for her blistering speeds and past victories, will race with a seasoned crew. 'Foxy' continues her journey with a spirited mix of family and friends. 'Bare Necessities', last year's MOCRA champion in the AZAB race, brings a skilled and experienced team, while 'Easy Tiger' will navigate with a newer crew. Joining them will be the fresh challenger, the trimaran 'Paradox 3'. Each vessel brings unique strengths and will be hoping for conditions that favour their specifications. With the ever-changing Irish waters ahead, we can expect thrilling competition and, as always, some nail-biting sailing. Tune in to the video as Matt Baker delves into the strategic choices of sail wardrobes on different multihulls and when to deploy each, setting the stage for what promises to be a riveting race!

Dazcat 1150 Bare Necessities and 1195 Sueños take us with them on their epic race from Falmouth UK to Ponte Delgado, Azores. It's the 2023 AZAB and initially five multihulls had been due to race, but in the end only the two Dazcats crossed the start line. Both Dazcats are racing 2-up. Bruce and Alison on board Bare Necessities and Rupert and Alan on Sueños are informative, funny, and at times heart wrenchingly honest as they grapple with the unforgiving elements, then sharing their delight at the beautiful scenery and wildlife...Life as it is on a Dazcat, right out there in the deep blue openness... Sueños is racing with their washing machine installed, while Bare Necessities is, well, bare. Somewhat unbelievably after all that distance and routing decisions (quite apart from the preceding 1200 miles, BN rounded the island to the finish to the south while Sueños went west), Sueños finished just about 5 hours behind Bare Necessities on elapsed time and an astounding 7 minutes only on corrected! Well, that was leg 1. Leg 2 coming up soon.... With very many thanks to both boats and their teams for taking the time to film and share this epic sail. Thanks also The Royal Cornwall Yacht Club who organised the race, and for re-admitting multihulls. Music with thanks to @Musicforsport, a local Cornish business. EDIT: This beauty has just come on the market. Find the details at: https://www.multihullcentre.com/dazcat-1495-prismo/... Having started life as an all out racer, Dazcat 1495 Prismo has proven the versatility of Dazcats once again...Can we really call the Dazcat 1495 a cruising boat? Meet Prismo, the live aboard cruiser 1495. Owners Andrew and Lashara, with their two dogs Whiskey and Björn, would say a definite 'Yes!' to that question. With the addition of some doggie guard nets on the rails and a super solar array they can now spend weeks at anchor in idyllic locations. The crew have taken two years to build their confidence and get the boat sorted to how they want it. I took the opportunity for a quick peek on board during a brief raft-up. I'm impressed by how much attention Andrew and Lashara are giving to keeping weight in check and maintaining the sleek minimalist looks that make Prismo so special, while also having all the comforts of home. Thank you for letting Dazcat Media into your home with my camera! This video was taken in summer 2023. In the Autumn Prismo set off for South Africa to begin an exciting new episode of her life and is currently in Salvador, Brazil. 40 multihulls jostling for space and air at the start, hearts pounding in a sharp blend of acute focus mingled with the heady atmosphere created by being among the 1100 strong fleet and the anticipation of what's ahead... The Round the Island Race has been a favourite fixture on the Dazcat calendar since the beginning. Maybe it's the draw of a challenge that on the surface looks innocent enough, but can test the most experienced boats and crew in so many different ways. It's dubbed 'Race for All' and the fantastically diverse and massive fleet is living proof of that. The 50nm, close-to-shore course with rescue services strategically placed could create a sense of security. Yet once again we are reminded that the elements are always boss out here on the water, the sea-states created by wind, shallows and tides create conditions to be vary wary of and unexpected things can happen at any moment. The 2023 RTI proved itself to be one of these and the rescue services, who did an amazing job, were kept busy all day. On board Dazcat 1495 Hissy Fit it wasn't all smooth sailing either and we had our share of drama. We also had some of the most beautiful, fast and quite literally, stunningly smooth sailing. Many thanks to Hissy Fit's crew and a special shout out to young Adam. He's only 17 (or maybe 16 even) and although an experienced J24 sailor, this (with the Nationals as a warm up) was his first multihull experience and his first RTI. It was also the first time D-1 has made it back to this race since her great victory in 1991 with designer Daz at the helm. You can find D-1's video of the 2023 season in the D-1 playlist, as well as older ones. The D-1 backstory is online here: http://tinyurl.com/Dazcat1-History Dazcats have been hand built to order in Cornwall since 1988, at the @themultihullcentre7981 . More about Dazcats on our website dazcat.com Our island nation and sailors so lucky to have the @rnli and the work they do. This year, 2024, they will have been saving lives at sea for 200 years and it was impressive and moving to see them in full action on this gusty day. The Dazcat lift, sizzle & smile technique is still on after 35 years...This great footage captures the exhilaration and endorphins that make us love sailing so much. With very many thanks to Tom Kirkman, local film maker. Thanks also to Highwater Sails and the @themultihullcentre7981, who have helped to keep team D-1 on the water, along with the support of the multihull community. Full video story of D-1 racing in the 2023 MOCRA Nationals and Round the Island Race on our YouTube.
When D-1 found her way back to us in her 30th anniversary year, this rocket-ship that launched Daz's career had been out in the wilderness for a bit too long. But, the decision was made not to leap into a full refit/ update. Instead, the plan was to sail her, see what worked well and what broke, or needed upgrading. That was at the end of 2019, just before COVID, followed by plenty of stop-start and not a great deal of progress until later in the 2022 season when the younger team members and their friends decided to take it on. They started to push both the boat and necessarily, progress updating it. You might imagine, given the context, that these young sailors would have an easy deal of it, but you'd be wrong. Yes, they've been well mentored, but it's a 'hard' mentoring, where they have been encouraged to find their own solutions as well as doing everything on an absolute shoestring budget, no easy handouts. It's an inspirational story of passion, determination, learning and the heart-warming support of the boating and multihull community. D-1 turned 35 in 2023 and this is her 35th birthday story, beautifully lived and told by Luca Stonehouse (Naval Architect at the Multihull Centre) and Peter Russell (Marine Engineering placement from Plymouth University, at the Multihull Centre). In this epic they sailed with friends Jack and Tom, who is (very usefully it turned out) a trainee sailmaker at Highwater Sails. D-1 helped the young Darren Newton to learn more than how to design a great boat. Life skills, excellent seamanship, the power of community and standing firm for your passions and principles. 35 years on and D-1 is still able to deliver on all counts, a proud symbol of all that Dazcat still represents today. Thank you to Team D-1 for taking on this amazing challenge and sharing it with us so honestly. Here's hoping you find that sponsor for this year! Very much thanks also to all of those who showed them kindness and support through this epic adventure. **EDIT** One of the titles in the video says it's the 2024 Nationals and RTI. It isn't - it's the 2023 racing!
The local Dazcats' 2024 season plans are starting to form and there are some great events upcoming. Working or playing? When you love what you do and do what you love there's often no clear line between the two. To design and build outstanding boats, understanding every aspect of the interplay between hulls, wind & water is crucial, as is first hand experience of all the systems and components that bring it to life and the potential effects of minor changes on any of these. Up close and wet on a mighty machine is one excellent way to do that and is exactly what our youngest team members have been doing this season. Design and build have teamed up in the persons of Luca and Pete, and they've been joined by others in their age groups from the yard and local sailing scene, as well as friends from Highwater Sails. D-1 is a well proven weapon and was the training ground for Daz himself who raced across the Atlantic (and won!) in a boat just like this, Clarke's Active Air, the 3rd Dazcat. They say passion diminishes over time but here it just seems to gather momentum. We'll be bringing you much more on D-1's season soon. In the meantime enjoy this short, and you decide whether they're working, playing or simply trying to survive!!
The Dazcat 1295 xl provides great opportunities for some father and son time but it is achieving so much more than just this. Mangata 5's story is a wonderful one, but it's a read not a video so if you feel inclined you can read it here and discover that some Dazcats have more important jobs than racing: https://www.multihullcentre.com/2023/08/22/sailing-beyond-boundaries-on-dazcat-1295-xl-mangata-5/
We sailed, and we socialised. Perhaps, above all else we bonded with our community. It was a pleasure to see greetings to newcomers issued with as much warmth and enthusiasm as those given to old friends and boats. The evening shore time laid on by the Royal Victoria Yacht Club at Wootton Creek (Isle of Wight) and Bembridge Sailing Club (Also IOW and steeped in fascinating history) both provided delicious meals, efficient bars and comfortable indoors and outdoor spaces to catch up with each other and the day. Perfect. But this video is a capturing of some of the sailing. With eight races over three days and just one 'longer' leg it was hard going around the cans for some of the bigger boats. Conditions ranged from very light wind up to around 20 knot gusts. Some races it went from almost nothing to strong gusts , then back again, in quick succession. The fleet of 21 multihulls sailing every angle as they rounded the buoys on repeat. Filming was from on board Dazcat 1495 Hissy Fit, the biggest in the fleet. It took us a few races to get into stride, a few penalty pirouettes early on as we paid the price for maybe some miscalculations, and the 'long' leg was completed in just an hour (phew, no buoys to go around at last!). The video tries to include all of the boats but with no fancy lenses or cameras to play with it's generally a matter of who we're nearest to. Apologies to anyone who is left out. The video isn't always in strict chronological order. For a blow by blow of the race and footage of all the starts please see Yachts and Yachting https://www.yachtsandyachting.com/news/263770/MOCRA-Nationals-at-the-Isle-of-Wight, with many thanks for the write up to our Race Officer Mike Samuelson. Congratulations to F27 'Origami' sailed by Mike Wood and crew for taking the 2013 MOCRA National Champion title. In 2nd place was 'Alini' sailed by Mark Upton-Brown and crew with Dazcat 1495 Hissy Fit, Simon Baker and crew, in 3rd place. Overall results in the Yachts and Yachting Article. Every boat and every race has a backstory. We'll be focusing on D-1 and team's epic efforts in the lead up to and during the Nationals and ultimately her successful completion of a particularly gnarly Round the Island Race in her 35th anniversary year. The young ones who have taken her on have an additional challenge to the one faced by the young Darren Newton (who won the 1993 RTI?) in that they are dealing with a now old lady, which we all know (in boat terms of course) comes with its own joys and tribulations. Watch this space for more on that? Thanks to all involved. Drone footage with thanks to Angus Fellows. Music with thanks to @Land of the Giants.
What's the best way to start your day? Topping our list is some fast sailing and a good dawn, on a Dazcat catamaran. #shorts
