The 56-metre superyacht Bayesian, which sank off the coast of Sicily near Porticello during a violent storm in August 2024, tragically claiming seven lives. After being raised from almost 50 metres below the Mediterranean Sea, Bayesian was brought to Termini Imerese, where the investigation into the sinking continues. Seeing the Bayesian yacht up close was a sobering reminder of just how powerful and unpredictable the sea can be. **DRUNKEN SAILOR** What do you do with a drunken sailor? It’s an old sea shanty — and a funny question. But underneath the humor is a much more serious one: **How do you know when drinking has become a problem?** In this episode of *Starting Over*, I take a lighthearted but straightforward look at alcohol, problem drinking, and some of the questions we sometimes avoid asking ourselves. It isn’t simply about **how much** a person drinks. Sometimes the better questions are: • What happens when you drink? • Has alcohol ever affected your relationships? • Have you made decisions while drinking that you later regretted? • Do you find yourself drinking when you’re lonely, angry, anxious, or depressed? • Have people who care about you ever expressed concern? • Have you ever wondered yourself whether you might be drinking too much? You don’t have to fit somebody else’s picture of an “alcoholic” before alcohol can be causing trouble in your life. And you don’t necessarily have to hit some spectacular “rock bottom” before deciding that maybe something needs to change. This episode isn’t about judging anybody. It’s about taking an honest look at ourselves — preferably while we still have the freedom to do something about what we see. A little humor. A little sailing. Wir verlassen Valencia und schon kurz nach der Hafenausfahrt wird es spannend: Große Frachter ziehen durch das stark befahrene Fahrwasser, rangiert von kleinen Pilotbooten. 🚢 Draußen können wir endlich wieder richtig segeln – doch die Strömung macht uns einen kleinen Strich durch die Rechnung. Eine gelbe Boje kommt plötzlich verdammt nah… 😳🟡 Unser Ziel: Castellón de la Plana. Doch auch dort wartet keine ganz einfache Hafeneinfahrt auf uns. Day 5 aboard the FPY 70S brought us into Portimão — and officially to the end of my part of her journey to Cannes. After several days of mixed conditions, Day 5 gave us something similar, and we spent much of the day motoring. Ironically, we ended up crossing paths with a Fountaine Pajot Samana 59 along the way and cruised alongside her for a while — which made for some pretty incredible drone footage. Once we arrived in Portimão, the owners of the 59 very kindly took our crew out for dinner — a great way to wrap up our final night together after five days aboard. I filmed the last part of this reel the following morning — Day 6 — just before disembarking and heading home. My time aboard may be over for now, but Hull #1 still has some miles ahead of her as she continues toward Cannes, where I’ll reunite with her in just a few weeks for her world debut at the Cannes Yachting Festival. If you’ve been following this journey, don’t go anywhere — there’s plenty more to come. I’ll be sharing more from the FPY 70S before and during Cannes, including a closer look at the finished boat and everything we learned from these first days at sea. 10 days. Tomorrow is inspection day, which means today is basically: EVERYTHING. EVERYWHERE. ALL AT ONCE. 😂 Showgirl needs to be ready, everything needs to be where it should be, and hopefully by the end of tomorrow I get the thumbs up to go on this slightly crazy adventure around the world. Today we adjusted the mainsheet so I can control it from both sides, secured the spinnaker poles on deck, installed the boom brake, which I am still figuring out but WILL know how to use properly before I leave 😂, and kept working on the solar panels. And they look SO good. We also cleaned because... wow. The boat was a mess. There are tools everywhere, things moving on and off the boat, jobs being finished and another million things happening around me. But we're getting there. Tomorrow I find out if everything we've been working towards actually ticks all the boxes in that very, very important rule book. So now I cross my fingers, keep working, and hope Showgirl passes her exam. 🤞 10 days until I sail solo, non-stop around the world. 11 days. And today’s very important question is: Where the hell do I put all the food? 😂 I found myself sitting inside one of the port-side lockers thinking, this feels pretty cold… potatoes? Onions? What lives here for the next eight months? My food is coming, which means very soon I have to somehow fit months of supplies into Showgirl while still being able to actually find things once I’m at sea. Meanwhile, the SSB radio needed attention, we found some issues with the antenna, and the clock is very much NOT slowing down for me. In two days I have an inspection, so right now everything needs to be where it should be and working as it should. The last thing my bank account needs after the past few months is a big fine because something isn’t right. 😅 It’s funny how close we are now. I’m about to sail solo, non-stop around the world, and today my brain is occupied by radio antennas and whether potatoes will be happy in a locker. I guess this is what 11 days to go looks like.
