Most people say “just get on the water and figure it out.” That sounds simple… but it’s exactly why so many beginners struggle. This video breaks down the step-by-step checklist I’m using to learn sailing before I even step on a boat. Not to overcomplicate things, but to avoid the mistakes that actually matter. I’m not an expert. I don’t own a boat (yet). But I’ve spent months researching, planning, and preparing for liveaboard life and this is the system that finally made everything click. If you’re trying to learn sailing without feeling overwhelmed, this might help you skip months of confusion. ⏱️ Timestamps: 00:00 Why “just start” is bad advice 00:49 The real learning shortcut nobody talks about 01:50 Step 1: Understand what the boat is doing 02:15 Step 2: Control the boat slowly 02:40 Step 3: Know what makes things worse 03:16 Step 4: Fix mistakes calmly 03:36 Step 5: Teach someone else 03:52 What real progress actually looks like 04:23 The truth about learning sailing ⚓ If you're learning sailing too, subscribe for the real journey. I’ll be testing all of this in real life soon. #sailing #learntosail #sailinglife #beginnertips #sailingadvice #howtosail #boatinglife #sailingtips #liveaboardlife #boatlife #sailingjourney #sailingbeginners #learnsomethingnew #selfimprovement #checklist

In this video, I break down why this question matters so much for beginner sailors, and why I ultimately decided on a monohull over a performance catamaran. We'll discuss: The catamaran vs monohull debate from a safety perspective Why feeling "too confident" on a boat can be dangerous How monohulls communicate warnings vs catamarans My journey from wanting a performance cat to choosing a monohull Why being careful beats being confident when you're starting out Shoutout to Adventure Man Dan, Sailing Songbird, Garrett's Adventures, and The Good Pirate (Baden Lesueur) for inspiring this journey! Comfort sells boats. But does it actually make them better? When I started seriously looking at boats, I noticed something that didn’t sit right with me: Almost every modern boat is marketed around comfort first. Wide decks. Cushions everywhere. Spacious saloons. But very little talk about performance, capability, or what actually matters when you’re underway. In this video, I break down: - Why the boat industry pushes comfort so hard - The real tradeoff between comfort and performance - How most people evaluate boats at the dock, not at sea - Why “comfortable” doesn’t always mean “safe.” - And the one question every future liveaboard needs to ask themselves This isn’t a catamaran vs monohull debate. It’s a comfort vs capability conversation—and I’m not convinced comfort deserves to win by default. 👇 I want your take: Would you rather travel faster with less comfort… or slower with more comfort? Let me know in the comments. If you’re planning to buy a boat, live aboard, or sail farther than the nearest marina, consider subscribing.
