Waking up off-grid in Borneo feels surreal. This was NOT the a wake-up call I wanted. 😞 Anchored just a little too close to the reef, and in the pitch black, with no moon and no bow thruster to help push us off, a squall hit our floating home. Wind howling, rain sideways and our boat slowly inching closer to the coral!! Somehow, between our crew’s quick thinking and some luck, we managed to avoid disaster. We wanted the atolls, but three days beating upwind from Guam? Nope lol. So we let the wind take us downwind, straight to Palau. Sometimes the easiest path is the one you don’t fight, and it’s rewarded us with crystal-clear seas, mind-blowing wildlife, gorgeous beaches, and epic spearfishing spots. Out spearfishing with the boys, and somehow in the chaos of fish and fins, they left Alexandra floating out there on her own. My heart stopped when I realized, but lucky I’d never taken my eyes off her from the helm. Watching her tiny head bob in the swell was the most terrifying sight, a sharp reminder that out here, the ocean doesn’t forgive mistakes. Guys, we recently dropped anchor inside a volcano. Yep, that’s right, Maug is this ring of three little islands in the Northern Marianas, and together they form the rim of a sunken crater. So technically, we’re floating right in the middle of an ancient eruption. The water here is insanely clear, and the walls of the volcano just plunge down beneath us.
