The Annapolis show is the biggest in-the-water show in the world. It attracts the sailing industry's latest and greatest. It's visited by over 50,000 sailors from around the globe during its annual 5-day run each October. ************************************************ Subscribe to SailFlix.com to watch boat show segments... https://www.sailflix.com/annapolis-sailboat-show ************************************************ Starting in 2005, and each year thereafter, we've been interviewing vendors about marine equipment, new yachts, chartering and all aspects of sailing technology. We'll be adding more gear reviews from over the last 20 years,, some with spots that were never edited until now. In 2005, video on the Internet was in its infancy. Many in the Sailing Industry considered the Internet a passing fad. And who was going to watch video on a computer anyways? There were no smartphones or tablets, and YouTube was just getting going. We were able to wrangle press credentials and showed up with one cameraman/soundman and a host. In was guerilla video as we approached quizzical looking vendors, stuck a video camera in their face and started asking knowledgeable questions about their products. It was the meanfuling questions and sailor repour that got the vendors to open up. 2005 was a great experience and we learned a lot about covering the Show.
Ever see a sailboat sailing under spinnaker in Cape Verde? This is a rare sight. But we did it. Conditions were just right for us to be sailing Cape Verde in full color from Sal Island to Boavista Island, about 40 nautical miles. We were joined by dolphins and the Canadians. Me and Peixe set out to visit the town of Sal Rei and experienced a very rare phenomena. Rain! Never seen someone so happy to dance and shower in the rain before. Having been here nearly a year, having dear friends and slowly learning to speak Kriul, I have been able to truly appreciate how special Cape Verde is. This video defines the ship's lightweight, deadweight, and displacement. Determine the value of displacement using a hydrostatic table. Lightweight - is the weight of the ship when completely empty. It is a mass of a ship with all of its structures including all steel, decks, cargo gears, and machinery with boilers topped up to working level. Deadweight – is a measure of how much mass or weight a ship is carrying or can safely carry. The sum of all the weights of cargo, fuel, lubricating oil, fresh water, water ballast, stores, crew, passengers, and effects. It does not include the weight of the ship. Displacement – is the weight of the volume of water that a ship displaces or the weight of the water that a ship pushes aside when she is floating.

We're on the move again and shoving off from mainland Scotland. We don't have too far to go, just a day hop from Wick up to an anchorage in the Orkney Islands. We've heard these waters are supposed to be full of Orca whales, and we're keeping a close eye out on the water as we travel. We can tell you that we do find hundreds of birds along the way...especially favoring a spot in front of Copensay Island. Landing in the Orkneys the weather keeps us from getting off the boat to do exploring....but it does give us time to prep for our next passage to Norway!
We continue the good times with our friends Mike & Lauren exploring the last islands of the Bahamas before setting sail to Florida. We swim on the sunken plane of Pablo Escobar's at Norman Caye. Rent scooters on the island of Bimini. Pic-nic on a mile long stretch of island before it disappears in the tide and learn to remove conch from their shell for a delicious island snack. Then in Florida we sail into the rivers of Fort Lauderale, say good bye to our friends and rest up before starting a long list of jobs on the boat. Join us and remember to SUBSCRIBE! We leave St Joseph in Ouvea and head along the northern atoll ring. After checking out the Faasi Pass, we anchor between Jehuten and Angeu Islands in a very tight anchorage surrounded by sharp coral in strong winds. After a dive on the outer reef wall, we head back to New Caledonia arriving at Port Bouquet.
For large cruising monohulls and multihulls, Dimension Polyant’s Hydra Net® Radial woven fabric is the top of the line cloth for performance cruising sails when laminates are not desired. Hydra Net® is a woven material that includes an extremely high share of Ultra-PE fibers in the warp direction woven tightly with high tenacity polyester yarns. Ultra-PE is the generic name for the family of yarns that includes Spectra and Dyneena. While expensive, these sails are strong enough to carry the loads of big performance cruising monohulls and multihulls. The tight weave of Ultra-PE warp yarns paired with high tenacity polyester yarns gives Hydra Net® Radial superior shape retention when used in a tri-radial panel layout. And there are other benefits of these sails: the fabric has a soft, working “hand,” and they are white, so they look just like a traditional Dacron sail. Hydra Net® Radial cloth is also higher in “tear strength” and is much stronger than any woven polyester. This means that these sails can be lighter than Dacron sails of equal strength, yet they hold their shape better over the life of the sail. Another bonus of these woven cloth sails is that, unlike sails made with laminate materials, the woven cloth is breathable, which minimizes the mildew-triggering effects of staying damp. Hydra Net® is often the fabric-of-choice for larger cruising boats that don’t want to use laminate sails. It’s an especially attractive option for long-distance cruisers since it can be repaired anywhere around the world simply with a sewing machine. Sailmakers like Hydra Net® Radial sails because design targets that were previously only possible with laminates can now be achieved with Hydra Net®. Although Hydra Net® is one of the most expensive materials used to make sails, these sails are still a good value because the price difference is offset by the fact that these sails last so long -- they are typically the last sails a boat ever needs.

We get a new crew member! After a lot of begging and some tears the boys dream finally came true and they got a dog! Ruby, a Havanese puppy has joined us aboard Hangtime and has certainly made the boat feel even more like a home. She has a sweet temperament, doesn’t make a lot noise and loves to snuggle. We enjoyed a memorable evening in Mabou, Cape Breton at the family square dance and then sailed 170 miles to Newfoundland. We were in awe of the rugged beauty, harsh landscapes and warm people. We enjoyed the Harvey trail, a walking path dedicated to Anne & George Harvey a father and daughter who came upon a ship wreck and risked their lives to rescue 128.. 1828 people during a terrible storm that blew through on a July day. ------------------------------------------ Subscribe at: www.youtube.com/c/sailinghangtime Posting on: https://www.facebook.com/sailinghangtime https://www.instagram.com/sailinghangtime/ Recent Videos: https://youtu.be/iNx0OQMCJN0 https://youtu.be/tu8k0eY-z9U -------------------------------------------- About us: We are a family of four who have been living on our boat for the past 2+ years with our two boys and our newest addition, a Havanese pup named Ruby. We worked hard in our 20's and 30's and built a company that has an amazing team managing it and allows us to work remotely and take time to enjoy this time with our fmaily. We love adeventure, sports and an active lifestyle but also take pleasure in a great meal or a sunset gin and tonic. Boat life is challanging and busy but we have been learning as we go and have a great appreciation for the sailing community and the willingness of others to teach and share skills. Continuing our cruise along the South West UK Coast before crossing the Bay of Biscay to A Coruña, Spain. We were getting the boat prepped fro the big hop. Also, Dawn was making her evhotels.org app run a bit faster.
After watching a weather disturbance for days we felt confident that nothing more than a bit of rain and wind was coming. Unbeknown to us, a tropical storm formed overnight and crossed just north of our current anchorage. Knowing that serious weather bands might cause high winds and a large swell we made a decision to sail south to Grenada from St Vincent & The Grenadines. Although Britican has survived one tropical storm and three hurricanes we never stayed on board to see what it was like. This time we had no choice. And to make matters worse we had a paying guest onboard! Watch the video to find out what it was like to run from and eventually endure the wrath of Tropical Storm Karen. We chose to sail to Corsica, because under no circumstances were we going to miss this part of France. I had never been to Corsica, and hadn’t stepped foot in my home country in over a year. Besides, Ryan was going to teach a one week course in Paris at the end go June, and flying out of Ajaccio (the Corsican capital) was the easiest and cheapest. Since I had myself to run some administrative errands in the French capital, I gladly followed, and enjoyed a free hotel room with AC while a massive heat wave was baking the entire country. I carried out my errands with various levels of success, but the possibility of hanging out with my family certainly cheered me up. We also took this opportunity to go visit the Beneteau factory in Vendee, where we developed a whole new level of respect for our boat. Back in a blazing hot Ajaccio, we couldn’t wait to go back at sea to seak a little bit of freshness on the water and at anchorage. Corsica marked for us the beginning of our best time in the Med. We finally settled in a groove and started to thoroughly enjoy our life onboard in the Mediterranean! ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ ** JOIN THE CREW! ** Join our virtual crew of Patrons at: https://www.patreon.com/ryanandsophiesailing ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ ** MUSIC ** 🎶 In this video: Headlund - A Pinch of Salt (Epidemic Sound) Joe E Lee - Praising the Seine (Epidemic Sound) Stationary sign - And so you say (Epidemic Sound) Dip Diet - Better than Sunday (Epidemic Sound) Max H - Paris je t’aime (Artlist) Micheal Shynes - The current, the river and the undertow (Artlist) Anthony Lazaro - Strangers in disguise (Artlist) ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ ** GEAR ** ⛵️Our boat: Polar Seal, 2007 Beneteau Oceanis 40, owners version (2 cabins layout). With a massive swell on the way, the captain wants to go south... https://www.sailingnandji.com/ In this episode of Sailing Nandji, after both Yosh and Bonita go separate ways to complete some solo challenges, they are reunited and back together again on Nandji. With Yosh's birthday around the corner he is determined to head south and surf a new wave he has dreamt about for years. With a massive ground swell forecast for the day, they bash their way south into the relentless strong trade winds and choppy seas... Don't fight the Weather. Just another day of boat life! With no sailing experience, we bought a yacht, got it blue water cruising ready and set off sailing to the Pacific! We have since cruised through New Caledonia, Vanuatu, the Solomon islands, Papua New Guinea, Indonesia and then onto the boat yard in Malaysia to prepare for the years to come. With a new engine, we continued onto Thailand, then back down into Indonesia and specifically West Sumatra where we are living the island life and chasing the surf. With our Sailing plans changing, we are returning to Thailand in the coming months and then taking the northern route of the Indian Ocean to the Andaman islands and onto Sri Lanka before heading south to Chagos and across the Indian Ocean once cyclone season has finished and the trades begin again! The adventure is just beginning! We departed the east coast of Australia in July 2017 and have since explored some amazing countries, met some beautiful people and experienced so many different and diverse cultures, dived pristine reefs, surfed solo in the middle of nowhere, spent weeks at sea, dealt with storms, big waves, strong winds and had the time of our life doing it! The adventure is just beginning as we sail West with the trades around the World! www.seanetco.eu info@seanetco.eu A few months ago I flew to Croatia to speak with Matty Zadnikar of SeaNet Europe to talk about his company that offers the opportunity to co-own a superyacht. You can view that video at https://youtu.be/hlEtdHnFpjA SeaNet's co-ownership structure has been so well thought out that I was convinced they will attract many people to yachting who otherwise may be reluctant to make such a large investment in what is essentially a recreational activity. When Matty told me that they have a new yacht available for co-ownership I jumped at the chance to produce a video of the yacht, but when I got there I found that it was not just the yacht that was impressive...but the entire SeaNet crew and experience.
This video discusses density/relative density, volume, and mass in relation to ship stability and calculates problems relating to these terms. Density is the mass per unit volume of any given substance. Relative Density (RD) of a substance is a ratio of the density of the substance in question to that of fresh water. Mass is a measure of the amount of matter in an object. Volume is the quantity of three-dimensional space occupied by solid, liquid, or gas.
