In the meantime, we had the opportunity to explore these beautiful parts of the Guadeloupe archipelago and hike all across the island. Explore More! https://www.instagram.com/betweensunandsea & Please SUBSCRIBE: https://www.youtube.com/c/betweensunandsea Did you know that a female lionfish can release between 10,000 and 30,000 unfertilized eggs every 4 days year around, approximately 2 MILLION eggs per year, in South Florida and warmer Caribbean waters? Also, on average, they eat up to 2.5x their body weight in other fish- every single day! They are so gluttenous, they can even get fatty liver disease and worst of all, wipe out entire reef populations with their overconsumption. They prey upon naive fish who do not recognize them as native predators, however, they also do not recognize humans as native predators either, so it is easy to hunt them and take advantage of their slow speeds! If you're near the ocean, get a hawaiian sling and get out there! In certain areas, eels, sharks, and even grouper wait patiently to steal lionfish off spears. So even if you don't want to eat it, leave it for the creatures out there adapting to prey upon lionfish, who would love the fresh catch.

How about an cruising the only leeward island with the best of both worlds, aka delectable French Wine AND great Dutch Beer? Come cruising with us to the smallest island in the world, where it's 34 square mile land mass is divided by two separate European countries- France and the Netherlands! It is also perfect getaway expats from all over to relocate in a tropical paradise of the Leeward Islands in the Caribbean. The northern French part of the island is known as St. Martin and is a great place for hiking, snorkeling, and provisioning! The southern Dutch part is known as St. Maarten and belongs to the Kingdom of the Netherlands, head there for the [in]famous Airport Beach, bigger waves, and the best Happy Hours on the island! PSSST...MORE DUTCH ISLANDS TO COME IN THE NEXT EPISODE! The division of the island between the Netherlands and France dates back to 1648, under the Treaty of Concordia. The tale goes that it began with walking contest between a Frenchman and a Dutchman. Before they started, the Frenchman drank wine while the Dutchman drank the stronger jenever (Dutch gin), allowing the Frenchman to cover more territory and claim more land. Either way there is NO PHYSICAL BORDER (whoop whoop) so sailors, explore your hearts out while cruising through the lagoon from one side to the other or hike over the mountains from one side to the next. We knew the waters and reefs were about to get really turbulent, so we are stocked up on the fresh provisions before sailing to the Grenadines to take shelter (where fishing isn't allowed in the parks). An iconic symbol of St. Croix and one of only three underwater trails in all North America. On the barrier reef side of the island, free dive the depths or snorkel the shallows with lemon sharks, giant barracudas, and tons of friendly angel fish! Over to the other half of the island you will find Turtle Beach, but be careful not to tread on the turf of the nesting leatherbacks, green, or hawksbill sea turtles! & don't eat the deadly green apples! A hike to the top for a 360 view of the island is a must, especially if you visit during humpback season. Take your own vessel or one of the many charter boats out for a full day and you won't regret it. Stay overnight if you can :) & remember to always bring your rash guard for the sun! First stop, provisioning in the quaint and hospitable island of Vieques before cruising to the Culebra National Wildlife Refuge- and most notably the uninhabited island of Culebrita. Here one will find more hermit crabs, goats, and migratory birds than human civilization and the place is only accessible by private boat. There are free DPNR moorings in the beautiful bay where you can snorkel with the resident remoras or take a bath in the natural stone jacuzzis on the opposite end. In this well protected anchorage we met an amazing cruising community and traveled as much as we could. Every day here can be filled with exploring hidden beaches, beautiful vistas on the mountains above, and blow holes on abandoned resorts, that shoot waves right into the sky! Check out the some of the best things to do in and around this well protected hurricane hole and meet some of the crazy fun cruisers/sailors/pirates we adventured with during hurricane season. We also took a trip to Alex's Peace Corps site on the east coast, and made pit stops to provision in Santo Domingo and Santiago along the way. For sailors who are thinking to sail/cruise these waters maybe these travel tips can be of use to you too! Explore More! https://www.instagram.com/betweensunandsea & Please SUBSCRIBE: https://www.youtube.com/c/betweensunandsea After navigating through the mazes of coral heads in the Caicos Bank and a rough crossing up the Turk's Passage we finally dropped anchor on the leeward side of the remote and desolate island of Big Sand Cay! While exploring the island we found the remains of an old shipwreck and lots of Sand- hence the name! It was as incredible as it was a bit spooky to be the only people on the entire cay, but it did say in our Passage's South book that it was the best place stage for our departure south to the Dominican Republic! Sailing with a solid beam reach all the way to Luperon, we headed in for the season to hunker down in this fabulously protected hurricane hole. Since it is surrounded by mangroves and situated deeper into the interior of the coast, it allows room for many boats to safely ride out the season. Once we fixed that and headed offshore our buddy boat's chain plate ripped through the deck and he had to drop sail! Not the best start to the next week of sailing the North shore of the Dominican Republic... BUT-we did also see an amazingly playful pod of dolphins that came out just in time with the sunshine!. & thankfully we continued sailing across smooth seas the whole way across the Mona Passage. We also caught a fish, finally! Alls well that ends well, and let's just say there was a very happy ending waiting for us in Puerto Rico! These waters are also some of the bluest waters in the world in the Caicos Bank and best for diving! However, like most of the Caribbean Sea, they too are ridden with the invasive lion fish! Upon dropping anchor in Providenciales, Turks and Caicos, we bid farewell to our two crew and waited for the next one to fly in! In the meantime, we decided to do some exploring on land and underwater and made a local friend who offered to take us to a "nearby" reef to do some snorkeling. Everything was going great and we even got to check out a few old Haitian shipwreck sailboats on the beach. Then, we got back in the water to do some spearfishing and had our first scary emergency at sea! Chris accidentally got stung by one of the lion fish. After a trip to the emergency room because his hand was turning black, he was writhing in pain for the next 12 hours! Luckily, his finger came back down to normal size enough to sail again. So, with our new crew member Colin, we weighed anchor and headed for the Turks Passage! Hope you fellow explorers enjoy this episode!
