WHY YOU SHOULD GO SAILING IN FIJI OFF GRID AND REMOTE PARADISE VILLAGE LIFE A huge thank you to those who help keep our boat afloat by supporting our creative process via Patreon. You can be part of the crew for less than the price of a coffee. https://www.patreon.com/CruisingKiwis 190 nautical miles east of Suva lies a beautiful, remote, inviting archipelago. Whoop whoop we are off to the Southern Lau Group. Here we give you a quick overview of what makes the Lau Group special and why cruisers make a bee line for this area. The culture, the people, the beauty, it's all there. Plus Rob dons his island gourmet hat and tries a few of the local delicacies. This week we share our adventures sailing the Canarie Islands. The next island on our list is La Palma, a charming island to the north west. We once again had an amazing experience in this colorful place. The anchorages were great with spectacular views of colorful buildings and miles and miles of Banana plantations. Tazacorte is a charming little town where the local fishermen strutted their stuff at the little marina, hauling out vast numbers of Tuna. We had no idea how they could possibly carry so many Tuna in such little boats. Visiting the Old Town is an absolute must. The cobble stone alleys with colorful flowers adorning the windows were truly amazing, any photographers dream. We prepared our Leopard 45 Catamaran cruising yacht to sail around the world. We want to visit off the beaten tack places and need to prepare for ice bergs, storms, heavy seas, as well as nice tranquil tropical waters... Thank you for all our subscribers! Follow us on our journey as we learn from legends when Sailing La Vagabonde upgraded from a monohull to a catamaran...SV Delos wants to upgrade to the latest Amel 51 monohull....Gone with the Wynns chose a Leopard Catamaran....choices choices choices. Check this out - we find a deserted communist fortress as we hike 18km from Kotor to Tivat, seriously one of the world's best hikes. We set sail for Greece and pick up an unexpected stowaway.

For additional details pertinent to this video please read the description below. An important skill for close quarter maneuvering is learning how to back your boat. Boat handling in reverse requires a different touch. The feel of how you go through the water and how you visually keep oriented is not as intuitive. We live in a world that is primarily forward focused and don’t consider as much to take a look behind us. The same is true even on a slow trawler; our attention is on what is in front of us, not what we have left in the wake. Running for a few boat lengths in reverse and keeping your course straight is not as easy as going forward but is easy to learn and this video was created to give you some pointers. While driving backwards on a full displacement single engine trawler with a deep keel you may find that your heading starts to turn into a slight curve due to prop walk. What can you do to stop curving and get back in alignment? There are two easy methods you can practice to re-align and straighten your position: • Shift into forward and correct your movement by steering with your rudder to get back on course • If you have a bow thruster, you can remain in reverse and “steer” with your thruster to guide where your stern is heading Another technique that you can work on as a skill is “crabbing”. Being able to keep your boat moving side to side is easy to learn and fun to practice once you get a feel for how your prop wash and thrusters need to work together to get you moving sideways. We suggest going out into open water, away from the constraints of a marina, where you have plenty of room to maneuver and practice backing up. It’s a smart move to post someone on the stern who can help keep you clear of any obstructions. Knowing that you can guide your boat in reverse and correct your course to straighten will make it easier for you to learn how to back into your slip which is the subject of our next video.

A testing, northwesterly offshore wind of 12-17kts produced fantastic racing conditions today at the Rolex TP52 World Championship on the Bay of Palma out of Puerto Portals as Harm Müller-Spreer’s Platoon took control of the title race. They posted two first places and a fifth to lead the championship by seven points going into the final day, Thursday. But for all that the 2017 world champions stepped clear of the pack today, sailing smart and fast, they did start each of the three races on the back foot, forced each time to climb through the fleet. After seven races their average points score per race remains three points.

The boat is constructed of exterior quality plywood, sealed with epooxy and sheathed in glass fibre and epoxy. One of the great beauties of these boats is that the ballast keel is fitted towards the end of the build, enabling the boat to be kept lower in the shed for most of the construction time. The keel and rudder are fitted shortly before launch. Thank you! Tony

We BROKE The BANK! Re-Rigging and Re-Powering our sailing catamaran Our most Expensive week EVER! They say BOAT stands for Bring Out Another Thousand and they aren't wrong! With the mast on its side, we take the opportunity to give the electrical systems a good service and overhaul. replacing the running lights, fixing the VHF aerial, topping and tailing the halyard and adding several more cars to the sail track ,to make reefing and dropping the sail easier. We replace our two year old batteries ( ouch! ) after a faulty Victron Solar Controller renders them almost useless. In for a penny , in for pound - so we add dedicated starter batteries to each engine We also decide to update our alternator charging system by adding two DC to DC inverter chargers. We melt down the credit cards and replace our seagull striker -which turns out to be a good investment as we discover several strands of wire are broken. The mast is finally put back on. We are Jo and Rob and we are here to share our sailing adventures with you. In 2016, inspired by the likes of ‘Delos’, ‘Sailing La Vagabonde’ and ‘Gone with The Wynns’, we sold up everything we owned and bought our 40ft, Fountaine Pajot ‘Lipari 41 Evo’ sailing catamaran ‘Double Trouble’. We had no sailing experience whatsoever, so the past few years have been a huge learning curve. We thought it might be fun to document our travels for anyone thinking of following a similar lifestyle. So far we have visited 7 different countries and sailed over 13,000 nautical miles. We have had many unique experiences that would not have been possible in our prior life and we don’t regret a second. We're both super keen on protecting our precious environment, so amongst other things, we both follow a plant based diet. You wont find any fishing footage on this channel! We start to make preparations for leaving the Kingdom of Tonga to sail to Norfolk Island via the beautiful Minerva Reef. We’ve heard that the crayfish are fabulous on the south reef so we’re going to check it out. We pick up a few last minute food supplies and do the final boat jobs that need to be done for the next passage. Magnus finally manages to fix the problem which is causing Izzy, the engine, to continually fill up with salt water! The autopilot clutch is fixed, yet again. We’re hoping it will make it all the way to Australia. The sails get a few stitches, hatches get resealed and Nutshell gets a big tidy up. We know that Australia is very strict with quarantine when entering, so give Nutshell a good clean and clear out unwanted and not needed items, in preparation for Australian customs. Wendy makes a new courtesy flag for our Norfolk Island arrival. Oh, and we show you how convoluted the process is for finding customs to check out of Tonga! Thanks for watching and following along with our adventures. SAILING - Meet Red the Irish Setter SAILOR DOG - Ep. 26 In this episode of Sailing Zephyr we arrive into a quiet Valencia marina where we plan on leaving Zephyr whilst we travel up to Madrid to visit family and friends. Dad, James and I get stuck into giving Zephyr a good clean before Mum and Marcus arrive to pick us up. After giving Mum a quick tour of the boat we leave Zephyr parked in the Marina and we speed off into the night headed straight for Madrid. Back home we enjoy sleeping on a non-rocking bed, have plenty of HOT showers and enjoy some home baked meals. So good to be home! Time flies when your having fun and before we know it, its time to head back to Valencia to stop those Marina fees from towering up. This time however, my family comes aboard including Red, our adopted Irish Red Setter who takes to sailing like a true champion. What more can I say about my family…..they are awesome. WELL,..... there is some very time consuming boatwork being done in this video people - getting the knee reinforcement fitted took SO LONG! : / Also the last of the V berth lining panels went in VERY easily, ha! And I do some more catchup work by epoxy painting the for'ard door jamb and sanding all of the prior epoxy glue joined panels! There were many reasons why, but the work stopped,... However, the work has re-started, thankfully, and I am on an exciting journey to finish Mistress and then go on my sailing adventures,... After a very short night we got ready to climb to the Volcano crater in part 2 of the Dukono adventure. As our clothes had not had time to dry out and the climate on the mountain being very different than on the coast we spent a very cold few hours in the tent trying to sleep. Toby seemed to be doing fine as his bloody loud snoring proved to Maxi and I. We than had a quick coffee and begun the 90 min hike in the dark to the crater rim. The redhot lava that was being thrown hundreds of meters into the air was simply amazing as the was the sound! Impossible to capture the lava though as it was only visible in the dark. The amount of sandy ash being thrown up was amazing and it wasn't until it began to get light that I realised how much of it was getting on my camera, wow, big cleanup job needed after. We spent a few hours up there then slowly made our way back down to a small pool where we had a quick dip to get the ash off then continued on down to meet the motorbike boys again. At the bottom there is a pool with hot water directly from the mountain, we really enjoyed some time there to clean off but also relax the muscles after what was a very tough couple of days for this sailors skinny legs.
