This is not a followtheboat episode, this a 40 year old legacy lens test... As you may know we use a Panasonic GH5 for our vlogs and it's a real workhorse. However I was missing my photography using my old lenses, so earlier this year we bought the Sony A7C, the world's smallest full-frame mirrorless camera. With a sensor twice the size of the GH5 it's great for low-light photography. Well, it turns out it's not just a great stills camera. The video capabilities on it are pretty cool too. Now let's not get carried away here. The GH5 has built-in, top-rated stabilisation, making it king for vlogging, especially on a boat. The Sony's stabilisation leaves a lot to be desired, so it's not (yet) replacing our beloved vlogging camera. A7C On the other hand, the quality of the videos from the A7C is top-notch. It has all the same features of the Sony A7iii (yeah, the one I dropped in the sea) but they've packed it into a smaller housing and improved the colour science, something that Sony was often criticised for (colour science just means the rendition of natural colours in-camera). And despite not recording 10bit internally like the GH5 does, the full-frame sensor is pulling in a lot of detail. Although my legacy lenses are purely mechanical with no electronics, meaning everything is manual focus, the auto-focus features on the A7C when paired with a modern lens are fast and precise. There are other compromises and benefits with this camera but I won't go into those except to say... The Problem With Modern Equipment The problem with modern, digital camera equipment is that they are so refined they introduce 'digital sharpness'. You may have noticed this, especially if you have a 4K TV or monitor. It can be distracting, ending up looking 'too real'. On our followtheboat vlogs we always dial down the sharpness to give it a more 'cinematic' look, but another way of achieving the 'cinematic' look is to use older, analogue lenses. They were made before computers were part of the production process and so they inherited 'characteristics'. Some people might call these 'faults': softness in the edges, flare from sunlight, different tints due to aging lens coatings, and so on. Olympus 100mm 2.8 I like the old Olympus OM lenses. They produce a 'warm' image when compared to other lenses, and they're smaller than their full-frame counterparts from other manufacturers. In short, they are ideal for the traveling cinematographer. This particular lens probably dates from the late 70s to early 80s. It's a telephoto, meaning it has a long focal length ideal for portraits. Lenses at this length separate the subject from the background and, with a shallow depth of field, the bokeh (blurry background) is pleasing. And funnily enough, my copy of this lens has a fair bit of mold in the glass! Using it on a modern camera, however, requires precision. Because it's manual, effort is required to nail the focus, and when the aperture is opened up (maximum f/2.8 on this lens), the depth of field is shallow, so misjudging the focus results in blurry footage. Fortunately, the A7C has a few tricks up its sleeve to help out. Stop rambling, you nerd OK, so these clips were all recorded in January 2021 between 4-6pm. The camera was mounted on a tripod and features both normal clips at 30fps and slow-motion clips at 120fps. 'Pulling focus', where you rotate the focus ring to shift between foreground and background, was difficult because my tripod is a cheap piece of crap. I said stop rambling Sorry, I just had to make my excuses! Without further ado, here are the results. Let us know what you think.

We replace our Tohatsu 2-stroke dinghy engine with a Yamaha F25 4-stroke. Jeff tries to avoid the marine police while motoring up the Dania Cutoff river since the dinghy wasn’t registered, and we make final preparations on our Leopard 45 catamaran before crossing the Gulf Stream to the Bahamas. Im Idealfall kommen wir in fünf oder sechs Tagen dort an. Außer wir müssen einen Tankstopp in Gibraltar einlegen. Noch aber sind die Tanks voll, weshalb auch die für Cascais geplante erste Motorinspektion ausfallen muss. Zu Glück konnten wir die meiste Zeit segeln.

In the most unlikely situation, one can generally find something positive! Because of Covid travel restrictions, our boat has been way past overdue for drydock. As a result, the anti-fouling paint has lost long ago any ability to discourage marine growth on our hulls. While we were forced to stay in one area for months, I had no reason to scrape our bottom from time to time and thus a real marine reef was created. When we finally were allowed to go back to Malaysia to haul out, I had to scrape our hulls to avoid the drag the reef would have on our boat speed. When I saw so many nice looking green lipped mussels, I could not resist harvesting some and having a feast of “Moules Marinieres a la Belge”. I ended up scraping most of our bottom, leaving the areas with highest concentration of mussels for future harvesting … resulting in several more great dinners! Warning: do NOT eat mussels you suspect might be containing toxic substances and eat a very small portion of mussels the first time to make sure you digest them well … This delicious recipe (given by our long time friend, Catherine) will delight your palate with good mussels found at the fish market or imported as well as some remote locations explored by sailboats. In this introductory episode we tell you who we are, take you down memory lane to show you our Scottish sailing to date, and we take you through the journey of buying a new boat in a global pandemic. This venture turned out to be quite the adventure filled with many lifelong memories. Our journey to finding the RIGHT boat took us over a year. We travelled to see a variety of yachts around Scotland, Ireland, and Croatia and eventually… WE DID IT! We BOUGHT a NEW BOAT! Altair was located in Ireland and had an eventful 5-day long sail back to her new home in Scotland. In April 2021, our old boat, a Westerly 33 sold and sailed off with her new owners. We now fully focus on getting Altair seaworthy and looking forward to our sailing her. However, Ragdoll will be dearly missed and once renamed, Altair has quite the boots to fill. Who are we? We are a family of three with three dogs, sailing the coasts of Scotland, exploring one island at a time – for now! There is no set route or plan. We will go where the wind and life take us. We have two golden retrievers and a bernese mountain dog – Hachi, Luna and Meems who sail with us. What do you think folks? This could be a better snubber line setup, but what the heck is going on with this line twisting with the chain? I think it’s due to the twisted strand nature of the snubber line, which is untwisting under load. Does anyone have a better idea? I’d be happy to have your recommendations for Snubber Mk II, using a particular rope that is thicker, stronger, stretchier and less prone to twisting with the chain than this blue rope supplied by Garcia as part of the Anchoring Pack option. Dee Caffari takes us on board 'Gentoo' for the RORC's Myth of Malham race, a 230nm offshore race from Cowes to the Eddystone lighthouse and back. Racing with Gentoo's owner James Harayda, this is the second race of the inaugural UK Double Handed Offshore Series that culminates in the Rolex Fastnet Race. As part of our new shorthanded series, Dee also talks us through what they have to take with them when they head offshore aboard their Jeanneau Sun Fast 3300.

Is Melody our cheap dream yacht or just a rusty Nightmare? The rusty steel is in a much worse condition than we thought in the cockpit this week as we continue to cut out and replace ever more steel from the aft end of Melody. We're starting to work on replacing the forward sections of the cockpit seats but finding the seat frames are completely rotten and we have to cut away more of the combings than we intended to. On the positive side we now have access to both aft lazaret/cabins from the pilothouse and once all the bad stuff has been cut out and replaced we will know for sure that we've dealt with things properly.
