Uncharted until just a month ago, Fibreglass was an entire different world to what we’ve known. This episode, we’re stripping back the layers of unknown: a black material hardened on the hull after a decade on the hard. We don’t know what it is and we don’t have a contact for the previous owner, so we’re taking it all off and starting from scratch. The ARC is the original transocean rally for cruising yachts. Around 150 boats set sail every year in November, sailing from Las Palmas on the island of Gran Canaria to Rodney Bay on Saint Lucia. The rally attracts people of all ages and nationalities, sailing monohulls, multihulls and even motor boats from 27 feet to 100 feet (8.23m-32m). Over 8,000 boats have sailed with us to the Caribbean since the first ARC in 1986. The 2,700NM Atlantic crossing takes around 18-21 days for the average yacht. The record is 8 days and six hours, set by the maxi Rambler 88 (USA) in 2016. This year we are bringing you along with live broadcasted updates starting from Tuesday 18th of November and then every day at 16.00 UTC, until Sunday 23rd when the start will take place from 12.00 UTC. Before the race had started it looked likely that the biggest fleet in the Transat Cafe L’Or were going to be dealt the toughest hand. The weather forecast for the opening few days of the race had already forced some changes across the fleets. The Ocean 50s were starting a day early to miss the worst while the Class 40s now had a pit stop in A Coruna inserted into their schedule. This now split their transatlantic dash into two legs, forcing all the crews to re-work their Atlantic strategy. But, three days after the fleet had re-started from the Spanish port there was another big judgement to make as the weather split their options in two. The questions was simple, go North or South? The answer was very complex and turned the 3,200 mile race to Martinique into a 13 day nail biter. We take a look at how the race played out in this fiercely competitive fleet. We depart Olbia after an immense laundry bill. With no money left for food, Nicole is forced to exercise her culinary muscle. She doesn't disappoint and feeds me well as we sail our way to Stromboli. The passage starts with strong beam winds as we guide Breezy through the rocky eastern coast of Sardinia. I misjudge the course of another vessel along the way and we pass close enough to exchange pleasantries. Once out into the Tyrrhenian sea and are met by a steep following sea that rolls the new HR44 hull side to side as the winds are directly behind us. Nicole keeps the sanity on board with calm and cooking. Providing well needed nourishment on board is essential to maintain stamina and happiness during these longer passages. We are gifted a fair wind on our first night and the following day enjoy a visit from a friendly pod of dolphins. We arrive at Stromboli at dawn from the north the next morning, the best time of arrival to witness the eruptions. Our good timing rewards us with a spectacular view of the Stromboli volcano that lives up to its nickname: "The lighthouse of the Mediterranean." Today I sailed home my new to me 1972 Bristol Carvel 22. I purchased for a great deal on eBay, if I told you how much you wouldn’t believe me so don’t even ask . Let’s just stay. It was an awesome deal. So I purchased her without ever looking at the cabin. I saw her from the shoreline, and I fell in love with this vintage sailboat. Now it’s time to start the motor for the very first time and head down the channel in East Greenwich Bay. Then it’s off to Narraganset Bay towards her new slip.
