In this episode, Andy from @sailingsole joins as crew as we sail the final passage on the 2024-2025 Great Pacific Adventure: Hawaii to California. We sail 3115 nautical miles from Hilo Hawaii to Two harbors, Catalina Island to Keeldragger's slip in San Pedro California in a little over 27 days. This July's North Pacific High pressure system is completely out of whack and throws us a few curve balls, but we maintain our morale and Keeldragger takes good care of us throw a range of difference wind conditions and sea states. Since leaving San Pedro at the end of October, 2024, we racked up a total of 11,750 nautical miles from California to Baja California to the Mexican Mainland, Sea of Cortez, and French Polynesia. We did the passage from Puerto Vallarta to the Nuku Hiva, Marquesas, French Polynesia single-handed. We also sailed from the Marquesas to the Tuamotus to the Society Islands single-handed visiting Nuku Hiva, Rangiroa, and Tahiti. While we are home but we are not finished with our sailing adventures! --- Tracker: https://forecast.predictwind.com/tracking/display/SV_Keeldragger/ Supporting the Channel: We appreciate your Likes, Channel Subscription, and Comments! In this episode, Tuck joins as crew for the 2500+ nautical mile passage from Papeete, Tahiti, French Polynesia to Hilo, Hawaii, USA. This is a tough passage - with bashing and beam seas averaging about 2.5 meters and winds frequently hovering around 20+ knots. The conventional route from Tahiti is to head Northeast until you get to the Inter Tropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ) so that you can pick up favorable sailing angles when you enter the NE trade winds. This puts us closed hauled for much of the first part of the passage and on a close to beam reach for the second part. Bashing and beam seas make this 22-day passage consistently unconfortable. We still have one more long passage for the Great Pacific Adventure: Hawaii to California. This episode is the final passage in French Polynesia where we sail from Rangiroa in the Tuamotus to Marine Papeete on Tahiti in the Society Islands. This is a relatively short two-day, 217 nautical mile passage. We negotiate the current and standing waves at Tiputa Pass on Rangiroa and encounter a few rain squalls on the approach to Papeete. We've sailed over 3900 nautical miles solo since Mexico, with over 6000 total nautical miles since we cast off the lines in Southern California! We still have over 5000 nautical miles left in the Great Pacific Adventure. Next up is the passage from French Polynesia to Hawaii, followed by the return from Hawaii to Southern California. --- Tracker: https://forecast.predictwind.com/tracking/display/SV_Keeldragger/ Supporting the Channel: We appreciate your Likes, Channel Subscription, and Comments! In this episode, we sail single-handed from Nuku Hiva, Marquesas, French Polynesia to Rangiroa in the Tuamotus archipeligo. The passage is about 575 nautical miles. While this is not a particularly long passage and we do not encounter any significant weather, we are presented with some challenges along the way! --- Tracker: https://forecast.predictwind.com/tracking/display/SV_Keeldragger/ Supporting the Channel: We appreciate your Likes, Channel Subscription, and Comments! This is it! We sail from Banderas Bay, Mexico to the island of Nuku Hiva, Marquesas, French Polynesia. This 3113 nautical mile, single-handed passage takes us from the Mexican mainland, across the Mexican archipeligo of Socorro Island, across the equator, and into Taiohae Bay, Nuku Hiva! This is a LONG episode, but we wanted to convey as much of the experience of a long, single-handed offshore passage as we could. We encounter many highs and lows including some equipment breakage, challenges, with weather, and the pure joy of sailing in times of near perfect conditions. --- Tracker: https://forecast.predictwind.com/tracking/display/SV_Keeldragger/ Supporting the Channel: We appreciate your Likes, Channel Subscription, and Comments! In this episode, Bill from sv Blue Aweigh joins as crew for our crossing from Mazatlan to Los Muertos and La Paz in Baja. The seas are the smoothest we've seen yet and we have an uneventful passage to the Los Muertos anchorage. It's a shorter hop from Los Muertos to La Paz and we have another smooth transit. Some mild drama unfolds as we anchor in La Paz., where we encounter the "La Paz Walt". -- Tracker: https://forecast.predictwind.com/tracking/display/SV_Keeldragger/ Supporting the Channel: We appreciate your Likes, Channel Subscription, and Comments! Chris from @sailingflightlevelzero Flight Level Zero joins as crew as we kick the adventure back up after spending over a month in La Cruz de Huanacaxtle. We take a short hop to Punta de Mita, where we anchor overnight and plan our approach to Mazatlan inside of the Tres Marietas Islands. Along the route, we do a drive by on Isla Isabel, the "Galapagos of Mexico", and make a night-time arrival to the Mazatlan old port anchorage for a rest stop before making our way to the entrance of Marina Mazatlan. The entrance to Marina Mazatlan is shallow with shoals so we have to time our approach at high tide. Our engine stalls twice due to an obstruction in the diesel pickup line which adds to the drama, but we manage a safe tie up at the marina. -- Tracker: https://forecast.predictwind.com/tracking/display/SV_Keeldragger/ Supporting the Channel: We appreciate your Likes, Channel Subscription, and Comments! Andy from @sailingsole joins as crew as we sail from Cabo San Lucas to La Cruz De Huanacaxtle in Banderas Bay. This is our longest passage yet at 294.1 miles. There is a high seas weather advisory as we depart Cabo San Lucas. We motor 16 nautical miles West to fuel up at San Jose Del Cabo (and thereby skipping the zoo!). Our strategy is to make our way South for several hours as conditions for the Sea crossing begin to improve. Overall the trip is without incident and our plan results in a smooth crossing. We are accompanied for several hours by brown-footed boobies and have several humpback whale sightings along the way. -- Tracker: https://forecast.predictwind.com/tracking/display/SV_Keeldragger/ Supporting the Channel: We appreciate your Likes, Channel Subscription, and Comments!
